We tramped down the long, long corridors to the auditorium, the size of which made us open our eyes in amazement, and entered to hear Mr. Spaine Welcome us with You are not to be spoken of as 'Freshmenl here, but as 'Sophomoresf You have al- ready passed your freshman year in junior high school. Apparently, as we later found out, our principal was the only one who thought of us as Sopho- mores . To everyone else, we were mere Freshies . Following lVIr. Spaine's advice to walk around the building a few times and find our home rooms, we started out. The bigness amazed us more than anything else. lVe peeked through locked classroom doors and saw the new walls and the new desks with scarcely an initial carved on them. To our dis- appointment, we were unable to see the gym, famous as being one of the best in the state and, incidentally, as having one of the largest and best floors for dancing. VVe had no Freshman Rally to help us become acquainted, but llflr. Spaine accomplished this purpose in another way. He assigned two or three from each junior high school to the same home room. VVe did become ac- cuainted very quickly, but for the first few days we were very downcast at the thought of not even seeing our former classmates in home room. Then we very quickly assumed the well-known Freshman appearances and habits that had been joyfully cast off by the now sophisticated 2A's. A Freshman never realizes how anyone else can tell that he is a Fresh- man. If only we could have seen ourselves looking at the shiny numbers on tops of doors and wearing a rather bewildered look on our countenances, we would have known. Our home work was done faithfully, even to the point of missing a movie. Our main purpose was to be in class before the bell rang, and we stayed awake worrying about report cards. To be nonchalant like the Juniors was our secret ambition, for we dared not hope to have that appear- ance that only Seniors can have. VVC had been Freshmen, 2A's and then, quite painlessly, excepting for a few Regents, we passed into the position of Juniors. The first term was quite uneventful, but we were aware that we were slowly approaching the envied rank of a Senior, During our 3A term, we finally organized and elected as president, VVilliam Dietz, as vice-president, Frances Chamberlain, as secretary, Sixteen Lucile Hawkins, and as treasurer, Richard Hallahan, but more important than the election of our offiicers was the unanimous selection of Miss Brakebill and lVIr. Meara as our deans. Now, as Juniors, we were content to arrive in class just as the bell rang, for we still were just a little afraid to be late and brave the withering glances of the teachers. We pretended on our scornful faces utter disinterest in a D or an F, but often we were really a little worried. Once in a while we for- got to do our home work. Then, at last, after struggling through several Regents, we were Seniors. VVe no longer feared being late for class. Report cards worried us less. Most of us were now acquainted with hir. Spaine, hav- ing at some time discussed with him the subject of skipping school. We often depended on something similar to a miracle to get our home work done. During the two and one half years at Mont Pleasant, certain students were foremost in various activities. One of these is Marvin Dwore, who We hope will some day in the near future become the country's star tennis player. A double team composed of lllarvin Dwore and Francis Chamberlain may some day be practically unconquerable. Besides athletics, many of our class- mates will be outstanding in other activities. In later years, Anthony Barbieri will be a fiery orator in the United States Senate and will have as fellow sena- tor none other than George Bernadt. Undoubtedly, Virginia Hogan will be successor to Madame Secretary of Labor, Frances Perkins. VVhen we finally became 4A's, a great event happened which was of as vast importance in our little world as the election of the President of the United States. The officers elected for our class were: William Boehm, presi- dent 3 Richard Hallahan, vice-president, Ruth Kerley, secretary, and jack Miklowitz, treasurer. VVe were not quite so irresponsible as we had been as 4B's, for our day of graduation was approaching and a feeling of uncertainty was hanging over us. Even the stars cannot foretell what will appear on the Regent papers. On a Friday night, November 16, the second annual presentation of Hi-links was given in our auditorium. The performers included one of our classmates, Perry Vedder, and his partner, Georgie Hall, who literally brought down the house with their tap dancing. VVe believe that Perry's name should be in lights on Broadway right now. What gave us a pleasant glow of satis- faction was seeing our faculty return to school under the careful eye of Prof Stone. No one could resist laughing at Mr. Delehanty singing The Man on the Flying Trapeze and attempting to dance to its tune, and Mr. Sherley singing Poor Little Buttercupf, Juliet Morhous and Romeo Jordan enacted the balcony scene as it has never been acted before. The climax was reached when Romeo began to eat Wheaties in the manner of Popeye and Seventeen his spinach. We also enjoyed the cowboy ballads of YValter Kowalchuk and James Senese, as well as the singing and dancing of Basil Enright, Maxine Marsh, Magdalene Bernstoff, and Robert Eilenberger, and the Xylophone numbers of Edward Koch. We saw ourselves in the pictures taken of the foot- ball game between Mont Pleasant and Nott Terrace and spent the latter part of the evening dancing in the gym, and the next morning we were greatly pleased to hear the sum of the receipts that was contributed to help publish our year book. We will graduate, presumably, but there will continue to be Freshmen like us who tramp through the long, long corridors, marvel at our gyms and auditorium and who are amazed at its bigness or, to use a word befitting a Senior, Hspaciousnessf' VVe will be able to see ourselves in every Freshman who enters and gazes, bewildered by the multitude of upper classmen who swarm through the halls. But there will always be Freshmen who will take our places and who will eventually become Seniors. Catherine Callias. The dignity of newly- retired seniors of junior high reasserted itself when, the first expeditions of discovery over and the auditorium found, we sat down and prepared ourselves for the next unusual event in the series which was to mark this historic day indelibly in our memories. Much awed gaping at our new surroundings was interspersed with Words of welcome from the executives of our new school and our class deans, Miss O'Connor and Mr. Jordan. Granted the privilege of choosing one home room from a long list of possibilities, we subjected each home room teacher and the pupils already Within her doors to a critical exami- nation. After finding a haven suitable for our three-year sojourn, we began the difficult business of extracting a schedule from the bewildering mass of curriculum sheets adorning the bulletin board. The abrupt transition from intermediate school superiority to the insig- nificance of freshman term was softened by the ever-widening vista opened before us. Here were new worlds to conquer! VVith three years of opportunity, what were the wonders we could not accomplish before that so far distant 1935 whose days promised exciting fulfillment of our soaring ambitions? At this time our only identification was that We alone could lay claim to the title Class of June l935 , but we set out immediately to establish our true status in the eyes of our patronizing fellow school-mates. The Student Council, then composed of boys and girls, was the first to recognize the hidden value in the unorganized mass of freshmen and enter- tained us at a Freshman Rally held at night in the boys' gym. After distribut- ing the formulas of welcome again and bestowing glamorous glimpses of club life upon the infant class, the speakers supplied the only disappointment of the evening with their casual references to the exclusion of freshmen from almost all clubs. Ours was evidently the last class judged worthy enough to be out after dark, for since then all the other freshman classes have been enter- tained in the sane light of day, their only compensation being the twilight of the tunnel trip. The fall of our entry into lylont Pleasant High School marked the first football battle with Nott Terrace and that school's subsequent defeat. Setting coincidence aside, We could easily attribute Nott Terrace's three consecutive years of defeat on the gridiron to the efiiiciency of the aura of victory which haloed our class upon our entry into this school and the super-human athletes drawn from our ranks. Nor were the girls to be out done on the athletic fields. Forty They conquered all competition in the soccer tournament and were second in line when the hockey contests were over. Not being content with these vic- tories, that same year they began the conquest of the inter-sport plaque which they have successfully defended every term so far. This unprecedented lack of the humility which is supposed to characterize freshman classes was brought out more markedly in ZA by the organization of the Eleanor Roosevelt Girl Re- serves, a club in which the active members were drawn exclusively from our own class. The 3A term found a more tangible organization among the members of our class. In class meeting we chose Ernest Bodenstab president, Gertrude Kozlowski vice-president, Jane Schuhl secretary, and Vincent Romano treas- urer. The first important duty of the newly chosen executive committee was the planning of the most exciting social event of the term so far as we were concerned, our Junior Class Dance. The whole-hearted support with which our class members showed their approval of this step made it a financial suc- cess at a time when the money coffers at dances were not noticeably full. Perhaps the efforts of the Dance Committee should not be overlooked in ac- counting for the two-fold success of our venture. In organizing classes where many a 3A girl patiently guided the uncertain feet of her spirit-willing but flesh-weak fellow classman into the dance patterns so earnestly studied, the committee encouraged the attendance of many juniors a little awed by the thoughts of dodging more confident couples on a crowded floor. Our interest in school activities has been evident from the very beginning. As early as 2B term drama recruited followers from our ranks, and Pinafore and Sun-Up presented familiar faces to the freshmen in the audience. Since then, HR. U. R. and the three one-act plays have increased the number of our dramatically inclined members. Nor has scholarship been neglected because of our numerous after-school activities, for we have been represented both on honor rolls and in commercial department contests. But our enviable record was in danger of obliteration during the 3A term when a fire in the incinerator threatened the school with menacing clouds of smoke. It would be timely here to add that a 3A pupil probably heroically rescued one of the many dogs that roamed our halls or rushed Miss Hoyt's skiis into cool safety, but We have no complete evidence. However, we can safely say that a 3A's progressive spirit led the exit from the building. Having failed miserably to subdue us by this un- timely intervention, the forces of nature again conspired against us in our 4B term in the form of spontaneous combustion in the dump. The calm indifference with which we continued to surmount every obstacle was again exhibited at the 4B dance where incense overcame the obnoxious smell which spitefully drifted in every open window. Forty-one Immediately after this dance the executive committee went into a huddle .ind emerged to announce an election of oflicers to serve for both' Senior B and Senior A terms. Ernest Bodenstab was re-elected president and Donald Mac- Naughton received the vice-presidency. Kathryn Von Stetina was selected as secretary, and out of the numerous candidates for treasurer, Madison Farnum was chosen to hold tight the purse strings. These details attended to, without doubt it was the project of a joint year book with the 4A's which dominated our 4-B term. Our class responded with traditional enthusiasm, and the under- classmen were harangued in their home rooms, at assembly, even at fire-drills, to sign on the dotted line of the subscription blank. Their response led to frenzied efforts on the part of members of both Senior classes to submit ma- terial to swell the printed record of our progress here. The rapidity with which this term has sped by gives the alarming realiza- tion that the time is growing shorter, and soon it will be our turn to participate in the ceremony of graduation. But before we do, we will have one final gay fling at our Senior Ball, the colorful climax of our social activities. Perhaps we have not succeeded in realizing all of the glowing ambitions which stirred us as 2l3's, but our wagons are still fixed to stars, the only disillusionment being the discovery of personal weaknesses and short-comings. Our hopes concerning those vague years after graduation are still optimistic. June and Commence- ment time will find us done with looking backward, our thoughts ahead in the future yet to be fashioned by our own hands. If you're tall, glide in with your head towering above the others. 2. If you're short, scuttle beneath your friends' elbows. 3. If you're medium sized, stay in line. -On saving seats for friends in the cafeteria: I. Place books and other paraphernalia on tables and chair next to you. 2. Begin your lunch and scowl fiercely over a bookg no one Cespecially lower classmenl will dare offend. -On buying tags: l. The one who begins the game calls, Tag ?,' 2. The participant answers with one of the following: a. 1,11 get it this afternoon. b. l've promised someone else. c. I lost my dime. 3. The one who inadvertently produces the required sum has fallen into the trap and is tagged it for the next time. -On receiving announfenzents of Trzrdy : 1. The failure of a clock to do its work is taboog technocraey is in vogue and welre all supposed to have electric clocks. 2. It is quite discreet to have been returning an overnight book at the library-if the librarian doesn't know you too well. 3. As a last resort, the alibi of having helped an unfortunate person will do. Good boy scouts are rather scarce and much appreciated. 4. A study of the faculty member concerned should suggest the advis- ability of entering with a cheery whistle or a hang-dog look. Un having Club pivtures taken: l. VVhen the phone message arrives, stride majestically to the door in full consciousness of the prestige of your solitary membership in that class. 2. Once outside the door, it is permissable to run so that you will be in the front row. A comb should repose in the vest pocket in cases of this sort. 3. The propriety of borrowing a classmate's coat in the absence of your own is assured. Clirnie Bodenstab's is rather popular.j 4. Glide into the last free seat in the front row. If the faculty sponsor appears to claim it at the same moment, hide your chagrin behind a smile and let everyone know you like to stand in the rear. 5. As a last measure, try to smooth your wind-blown coiffure just as the picture is snapped, and then wish you had never been in the picture or bought a year book! She honored the 4-A class and was dean, VVC honored her with Work-what we mean! Meet Sophie-small and blonde Of whom particularly the boys are fond. Upon her studies she spends her days, VVith the pleasant result that she gets all A's. She tried to write some rhyming rhyme, The above is what she got for her time. EULOGY ON SCENT We lilted gayly at our dance, Our minds forgot each careg The breezes blew, and then we knew The essence of the dump was there. VVhen at the end of every day VVe bade our friends farewell, VVe'd grab our books and dash away From that offensive burning smell. At football games the music played. Above the drum's deep thump The screeching engines loudly roared With twenty firemen at the dump. We'll try to do our best or die Until the game is won, But please don't make us try right now. Oh, wait until that smell is done. Two, sixty, four, hip! To one end ran Stanley, brawny hands outstretched, Receiving the football, deceiving the foeg Turning, he foiled them, while man against man Ten teammates tried blocking, and slipped on the mud, Fast drove the rain, and yet swift through the mist-fog Ran Stanley. A touchdown! Though pulled past the puddles, Dragged down by opponents, piled on the stampeded, Emerged our hero, teeth to the winds. Mildred Ramsdell One Hundred Nzne OF THESE WE SING The first one is the people's choice, A long and lanky ladg In all the clubs he has a voice, He's Ernest Bodenstab. Who's that tall, dark Romeo Whose love scenes dispel boredom? He's dean of our most glorious class, His name is Bernard jordan. A small blonde person is the next, She's active in this school. It doesn't take you long to know This damsel is Jane Schuhl. A rival to the President I'm sure heill be some day. He's determined and efficien., Of course, I mean John Rej. She types with an amazing speed ' That makes those keys grow hot, Some business man's stenographer Will be Miss Anne Bernadt. She's delightful, she is witty, And she draws extremely well. Of course, you know of whom I speak, She's pretty Mildred Ramsdcll. Go warn those stars of Hollywood, His rivalry will harm 'em. His talks and cheers delight our ears, This lad is Madison Farnum. Her soft, low voice, her languid gait, Are as well-known as Socony. An asset to our class is she, This brilliant Miss Molony. To have her as our worthy dean, We feel it is an honor. As friend and guide, she reigns supreme She's known as Alice O'Connor. This youth of whom I speak right now, Once seen, is ne'er forgotten. Where would the basketball team be Sans lengthy Don MacNaughton? The girl who typed these silly rhymes Is accurate, fast, and trusty. We thank her for her welcome help. All hail Miss Ann Sobieski! When she's absorbed in studies, There's nothing that can hold her, That tall, dark, charming maiden Whose name is Helen Coulter. Oh, see her sprinting down the street, Her red curls trailing after.
