Slowly I saw the tank creeping toward me as I lay in the bushes I could almost hear it roar three phrases, Death is com ing! Death is near! Death is here! I shook myself and crept closer and closer The tank was about 150 yards away bearing closer and closer The ugly looking gun pointed almost at my head It's funny, I thought, that this man made machine is des troying so many men This machine has 500 soldiers trapped Five hundred soldiers and only one dared to volunteer! I thought of how I would be a hero write ups in my home town paper medals sent home to my wife and family! Again I snapped out of it as the tank roared toward me it had to be timed perfectly I had the dynamite strapped to me When I pulled the pin the tank would be blown sky high along with myself I gave a quick snap and rolled in front of the tank as I saw it near my body I was squarely in front of it between the lags I felt it creep over me and I pulled the pin! Now that's funny, I thought, nothing happened, then I felt wife kids friends school tanks soldiers and then of God, such a bright light was shining and there before me God This I knew now was death! The thing I dreaded most was really beautiful Paul Falconer '52 Sunset Do you ever stop, after a hard day's work, while you're walk ing home, or looking out a window do you ever stop to watch the sun go down? There is nothing more beautiful! The bright, vivid colors fade into soft, creamy, fluffy tones of pale pink, and blue, yellow, and purple The dark blue moun tains stand out distinctly against their colorful background Somewhere, on a ridge, an elm tree stands erect, outlined against the fading blueness of sky Slowly, the sun sinks a little lower and the colors change to a more orange glow deep here, soft there So often this scene brings a little touch of sadness to the heart as you think back over the day and remember the important things left undone, or perhaps you remember an unkind word which you have spoken to someone Yet, this scene may bring a surge of happiness, too, for you know that tomorrow is another day, and you are challenged to make each day better than the one before As you think these things, the sun keeps going down down down until it drops out of sight behind the mountains Then the world around you begins to get dark You sigh and turn your head Maybe a miracle has been accom plished, or maybe you have nothing to show for the day Whatever the case may be, you feel at peace, for you know that if God can make the beautiful sunset, He can do anything so that everything will be all right.
