The richest man is one who goes around with a smile on his face Now, how can smile make one rich? If you figure in terms of money, you will come to the conclusion that this is not possible But one thing you over look is that money cannot buy everything It can only buy the material things Where as a smile, as cheap as it is will make the people around you happy If you can make people happy, you possess riches beyond anyone else People who hav this asset are more than willing to share it with others You try it, and see if it doesn't make the world go around again for those who think it has stopped Gerald Drugge '52 The Avalanche at the Beach Junior Young and Jimmy Blake, two sixteen year old boys, decided to take a trip to the beach one hot afternoon in July They had their mothers fix them a lunch and they got their beach blankets and radios ready to take the radio and lay down under the shade of a large beach umbrella Because the radio was turned on they didn't hear two small boys holler, nAvalanche W There was a loud thundering noise as something large and heavy rolled towards them Junior and Jimmy both looked up and then quickly covered their heads with their arms as the avalanche of fat rolled onto them When they regained consciousness they were lying in a hospital Junior had a broken leg and several bruises, and Jimmy had a broken arm and a large cut on his face, caused by the wom an's bracelet Just then a nurse came in followed by a young man and Junior's and Jimmy's parents The man was the lawyer of Mrs Van Snoot the billioniare of Long Meadow As they stood around the beds of the two boys, inquiring about their injuries, the lawyer cleared his throat and said, 'Mrs Van Snoot, as you know, is a very large women weighing five hundred and ten pounds She was spending the afternoon at the beach and dozed off, when two little boys gave her a shove and she started rolling She is very sorry that this accident occurred and hopes you'll accept her apologies and a thousand dollar check apiece The boys' parents had insurance to cover the hospital bill, but Jimmy and Junior accepted the thousand dollar checks and gave them to the March of Dimes Fund They hope it will help the boys and girls who have to spend most, if not all of their lives, 1 the hospital, instead of just a few days there like they did Carol Johnson '55 . . a 0 .7 o . e .When they arrived they spread out the blankets, turned on I O , n The Solitary Rat It was dark in the long corridor as guard Ivan Peters led the convict down, down, down He was taking him to solitary, solitary confinement that would be a living hell Few men could stand the dingy, vermin infested cells of Blackgate Prison or the beatings of the guards A large rat with bright eyes scurried across their way As he trudged downward, Peters thought, nThat new warden a fool No solitary confinement in the prison anymorein says he to me 'What are we to do with these jerks when they get out hand? I'll show him I'll take this stooge of his down to soli tary, no matter what he says Oh well, here's the door, only two flights of stairs left to go, then I can beat this guy to a pulp I'l1 show that warden that I can put anybody I want into solitary Humphll Look at that big rat ' The pair of men, one guard, one prisoner, came to the soli tary cell The stench was terrible, water dripped from the cracks in the moss covered granite walls, light came from a small grating sev eral stories up, the bed was a bunch of vermin infested rags, a short length of rubber hose hung on the wall and a large rat sat in the corner, looking at the two men with small bright eyes Peters threw a rock at the rat but it wouldn't move This made him all the angrier, so he turned and knocked the prisoner The rat in the corner just sat and watched with his little beady eyes The prisoner remained motionless where he had fallen, and the guard advanced upon him with the hose in his hand 'You slimy crook, I'll show that warden that he can't stop me from knockin' your teeth out,' Peter screamed, as he lashed the convict with the hose n'No solitary or beatings for the prisoners Ha' that milksop' That's what he thinks W Peters struck the prisoner again and again, screaming as he hit him The prisoner's screams were drowned out by his own The rat with bright eyes watched quietly There was the sound of rubber hitting flesh, then the sick ening crunch of bone, then silence Peters turned and walked out Peters felt good as he walked up the stairs toward the big iron door He reached for the knob There was a smell of burn ing flesh and a scream as Peters touched it It was red hot The door was red hot all the way around at the edges, for it had been welded shut The bright eyed rat sat on the still convict and watched him 'The warden! The warden has had it welded shut as he prom isedl I didn't hear them and they d1dn't hear me when they welded it, for no one can hear a sound from in here,n thought Peters He grasped the small peep hole and slid it open A small piece of cement came through The warden had made doubly sure, he had had the door cemen ted over A O is .. of to the floor. . 0' 0 Peters looked at his watch, it was seven thirty, he had been down there an hour beating the prisoner He sat down and looked up the long air shaft to the grating that supplied light The rat looked at him and the convict looked at nothing 'Help' Help! As she came closer, frogs leaped from the banks into the water, and she could see dozens of trout, large and small. swimming in the water and disappearing under rocks. Enchanted by the scene, she stood staring, while an appar- ently friendly fawn appeared on the opposite bank. She watched for some time unseen, while it came down to drink. After it had gone, she slowly retraced her steps to the path, determined to come here often. Suddenly she realized why tourists visiting the old estate were awe stricken and enchanted at the sound of sweetly 0 O .n O O OO . n man-a convict-but still a man. singing birds and a tumbling brook, that they could neither see nor locate Helen Ranta 'Sh She Never Had a Chance Leslie stepped off the train at Grand Central Station She was a picture of forlorness A girl just turned fifteen, with blue grey eyes already carrying the look of despair, lines around her eyes and mouth, a drag in her step Should she have come to New York? It is the wish of almost every girl to be part of the excitement and bright lights of the big city', and Leslie was no excqnnon She had been an only child, and her parents were killed just two weeks before in a plane crash It was then that the farm born Leslie decided to start out on her own, with 3200 and a few bedraggled hopes Now here she was, in New York, with people and noise bust ling about her everywhere She had no idea where to go or what to do Her first thought was to find some place to rest her weary body She needed to do some clear thinking, and to do that she needed to be alone She found a cheap room not far from the station It wasn't much, but it would have to do for now After a good night's sleep she would feel much better, and things would look more hope ful, she was sure She awoke the next morning, and looked around her She couldn't remember where she was, but finally she realized she was in New York, her new home hurried cup of coffee, she bought a paper and went back to her room She scanned the want ads and spotted one that read, 'Chorus girl needed at the Havana Club' She read the address, grabbed her hat and coat, and started for the club She approached the office for the interview, she was almost in tears She would have to lie about her age, and she hoped she could look eighteen When the receptionist finally told her that Mr Barnes would see her, she took a fleeting glance at her self in the mirror, and was scared Mr Barnes proved to be a rather hard looking character in his middle forties But after they were introduced, he put Leslie very much at ease, with smooth talk Surely this should have been a warning signal, but Leslie just let it pass as sincere kindness 'You should understand, Miss Cooper, that your work will be strenuous until you get the hang of it It 1sn't easy to become a chorus girl, and you can't make yourself perfect over night' Leslie said she understood very well, and after a few more words with Mr Barnes, she was dismissed, and went joyously back to her room She sat and thought of her good luck on her first day in the 'big city' 'Maybe New York will have something for me after all', she thought aloud 'The ringing of the telephone startled her out of her day dreams a few hours later She looked at the clock Just six Then she reached for the telephone A voice asked, 'Is this Miss Cooper?' n I ' - . 0 ! Leslie dressed quickly and went out for breakfast. After a Leslie summoned a faltering, Y yes, it is ' The voice at the other end continued, 'Well, I'm lucky to find you home This is Mr Barnes Would you like to have din ner with me?' Leslie didn't know what to say She was only fifteen, a stranger in a strange place, and this Mr Barnes, an older ma was asking her out But she decided one thing fast, she must have looked eighteen, so now she'd act it! 'Why, I'd love to Mr Barnes I'11 be ready at seven, and with a hasty, 'Goodbye,' she hung up Leslie was thrilled with Mr Barnes, or Greg, as he asked her to call him He knew New York, and he showed it to her! At rehearsal the next day, she tried to act very friendly toward Greg, for the benefit of the others It worked for awhile, but when Greg came over to ask her to have lunch with him, she couldn't conceal her joy And then, after a dining and dancing date that night, she decided she was very much in love with Greg, and told him so She noticed the sharp intake of his breath, and wondered if she'd said the wrong thing, because Greg definitely looked wor ried However, he said nothing The followin morning, she was deliberately a little early for rehearsal, so she could surprise Greg by dropping in his office to see him woman's 'Really, Greg, you shouldn't lead the girl on like this After all, you are my husband ' nYes, Rene, I know Just be patient a while longer This deal should be about ready,' Greg answered Blind with fury, Leslie pushed the door open and stood fac ing the couple She didn't trust her voice, but she pointed an accusing finger at Greg Looking quickly to her left, she was able to see a heavy black object, used as a door stop Swiftly she picked it up, and hurled it at him It missed Greg, but hit his wife in the head The woman slumped to the floor Without even going to her, Leslie knew she was dead Greg just sat and stared for a long time Finally he called the police, but Leslie didn't move from the spot in which she was standing After the police arrived and started firing questions at her, she burst into a flood of uncontrollable tears She was taken into custody Today, Leslie Cooper is on trial for murder A murder which she was almost forced to commit Would you, reader, blame this girl? This girl who was taken in by flattery and the bright lights of New York City? This girl, who never had a chance? Death is near! Death is here! I shook myself and crept closer and closer The tank was about 150 yards away bearing closer and closer The ugly looking gun pointed almost at my head It's funny, I thought, that this man made machine is des troying so many men This machine has 500 soldiers trapped Five hundred soldiers and only one dared to volunteer! I thought of how I would be a hero write ups in my home town paper medals sent home to my wife and family! Again I snapped out of it as the tank roared toward me it had to be timed perfectly I had the dynamite strapped to me When I pulled the pin the tank would be blown sky high along with myself I gave a quick snap and rolled in front of the tank as I saw it near my body I was squarely in front of it between the lags I felt it creep over me and I pulled the pin! Now that's funny, I thought, nothing happened, then I felt wife kids friends school tanks soldiers and then of God, such a bright light was shining and there before me God This I knew now was death! The thing I dreaded most was really beautiful Paul Falconer '52 Sunset Do you ever stop, after a hard day's work, while you're walk ing home, or looking out a window do you ever stop to watch the sun go down? There is nothing more beautiful! The bright, vivid colors fade into soft, creamy, fluffy tones of pale pink, and blue, yellow, and purple The dark blue moun tains stand out distinctly against their colorful background Somewhere, on a ridge, an elm tree stands erect, outlined against the fading blueness of sky Slowly, the sun sinks a little lower and the colors change to a more orange glow deep here, soft there So often this scene brings a little touch of sadness to the heart as you think back over the day and remember the important things left undone, or perhaps you remember an unkind word which you have spoken to someone Yet, this scene may bring a surge of happiness, too, for you know that tomorrow is another day, and you are challenged to make each day better than the one before As you think these things, the sun keeps going down down down until it drops out of sight behind the mountains Then the world around you begins to get dark You sigh and turn your head Maybe a miracle has been accom plished, or maybe you have nothing to show for the day Whatever the case may be, you feel at peace, for you know that if God can make the beautiful sunset, He can do anything so that everything will be all right. When Mr. Blood called for a meeting in September, some thirty interested students attended. Out of this meeting came the new Monson Academy Band. One weekly rehearsal has brought us to the point where we have been able to make seve- ral public appearances including a concert for the students of Piscataquis Community High School. Monson Academy was represented at the Penquis Festivals held in Greenville March 29 and Dover-Foxcroft May 3 for the first time. Those who played in the composite band from our school were: Trumpets, Lolly Jacobson, Cindy Forbus and Paul Falconer. Saxophonesg Parker Hall, Gayle Towne and Carol Johnson, Bass Horn, Herman Drugge. Not only was the experience gained extremely valuable, but the good time had by all will long be remembered. We hope that this marks the beginning of our organization which will grow to become one of great importance to us all in our school life. Mr. Feero: 'Can you give an example of wasted effort?'
