If IHARPT talk and talk and tell the wonderful thrngs we saw It nas very hard for us to get our mrnds down to such dull work as study mg but as we wer graduatrng we just had to forget our trrp and study hard Anotlaer June has rolled around School rs done and Mrs Jacobs rs back rn her cottage One dav she called on rm mother and they seemed to have r very serrous talk Later we found out that Mrs Jacobs want d to put Jane and me through college Thrs was very rr onderful thrng for us as we could not hare gone otherwrse So ve are looking forward to the fall and me shall be gorng to college THE MYSTERIOUS STRANGER On a mornrng rn the summer of 1938 a hort dark eyed curlv headed young man of 29 arrrved rn a small northeastern town of Lorrarne He went bv the name of Jack Lanrer No one knew where he came from but a he was a lrk able and capable person he was soon known and admrred bv all who knew hrm As far as hrs wealth was con cerned rt, was nonexrstent For a few months he worked lll a summer tourrst camp untrl rt closed He acqurred a revolv r a. dog and an old car Jack wore the revolver mo t of the trrne around Lor rarne and although thrs was no uncommon for trappers to do most men drd not carry weapons when at home Jack earned hrs board dorne odd Jobs untrl trapprng season began Then he went rrrto busrness wrth a local trapper He soon trred of thrs work when he recerved no money and drd all the work Of course berng young and good look mg he was admrred by all the tovln s female populatrcn However Jack never became frrendly wrth any cf them to the degree ot courtslrrp Jaclf tales of hrs travels seemed rnex haustrble He clarmed to be of a French German Englrsh and Indran descent Hrs famrly lrved rn France at the trme of the first World War but moved to Amerrca soon after because they lst all therr pos se..s1ons from the German rnyasron But hors drd hrs mother happen to be half Indran you say? That IS 1 question that has been pondered but never answered He sp ke of a younger srster Hrs mother and a Lrc her lrved rn a mrd western crty When he ne ded money he would wrrte hrs mother and she sent rt from an msurance he sard Jack vas actually a Jack of all Trades There uasnt a Job he couldrr t do from mrllr mg cows to drawrng blueprrnts and over haulrng the engrne of an automobrle He bought a frsh house and with hrs dog prepared to spend the wrnter It was so cold h almost froze so the Browns the pe ple he was workrng for took hrm rn Lrttle Sally the daughter of the famrlv was hrs ardent admrrer and farthful frrend Wherever he was she was there As tune went on Jack decrded he lked thrs part of the country He got p rmrssron to cut logs to burld a log house When rt was flnrshed he was gorng to end for hrs mother He burlt a lrttle model of hrs prop s d lo cabrn from match strcks He promrsed Sallv that when hrs hou e was nnrshed she could have the lrttle model bprmg cam slowly that year of 1939 Jack eemed more contented and lost to a degr hrs manner of watchfulness as rf he were Jack and Mr Brown took the lr rses ard started to vard out th logs to be used for hrs house The wet weather was bad for hrm and he developed a co'd whrch start d hrs teeth to achrng He went to a dentrst rn a nearby town and had two teeth pull d Blood porsonrng set rn and for several weeks he was srck rn bed untrl frnal'v the doctor took hrm to a hosprtal The reason for the delay was because the town drdn t want to be responsible for hrs brlls Before leavrng to go to the hosprtal h told Mrs Brown to have someone go up to hrs camp and get hrs thrngs so no one would teal them But someone had been there already About all there was left was a box of letters and some mrscellaneous artrcles of clothrng One of the letters wrrtten rn pencrl on yellow paper vrarned hrm not to have any thrng to do Wrth the others because they ouealed when the cops were after them It was srgned Your Cousrn Another letter from a man was srgned your od cell mate He lrved onlv a few days Before he dred telegram was sent to the address of his brother but because of a mrstake rn the street address rt came too late The brother wrote to the Browns and thanked them for all they had done for Jack He requested that hrs personal belongrngs be sent C O D Then the Browns recerr ed a letter from a woman clarmrng to be Mrs Jack Lanrer In her letter she sard she and Jack had been marrred a year and frve days to the date of hrs death Jack went nshrng one mornm and she never heard from hrm agarn Then one day she read a notroe of hrs funeral rn a crtv paper Because none of hrs folks knew of hr marrrage she was not admrtted until she howed her marrrage certrncate She said she was commg East rn June Browns recerved another letter from Jacks brother tellurg them that Jack had been marrred and therefore hrs belongrngs would go to hrs wrfe Nothrng more has ever been heard from erther the brother or wrfe In the trunk Jack left at Browns was a 24 T H l ' I R A V , V , .
