uncovered May 27 1860 when Monson was vxslted by 'mother conflagratlon which destroyed the greater part of the vlllage mcludmg the Cong egatlonal Church two hotels nearlv all the hops and stores and slx dwellmg houses In splte of this great calamxty the work of the Academy went on and the out slde ol the bulldmg was fimshed durmg the the carpenter work The legislature of 1861 m response to an apphcatlon by the trustees granted to Monson Academy one quartel of a tovmshlp IH Aroostook County whlch the 'Trustees sold January 24 1864 to George K Jewett of Bangor for S2000 On the strength of this grant the Academy had been fl 1Sh6d on the mslde 1n 1861 the work mg dore by James Washburn of Parkman 1th some changes ln th mterlor arrange ments the bulldmg was then what lt IS today except that the second story was left as a hall the lower storv only being used for school purposes It was fltted with hard wood double desks and seats of a pattern much superlor to those of the old buxldxng but now dlscarded Among the contrxbutors we note wlth interest the name of the flrst prlnclpal Wllllam Seavey who gave S50 Smce 1872 the Academy had been umted w1th the Monson Hlgh School ln exchange for a grant made by the town for thls pur pc e The mvested fund of the Academy ln cleased from S2 798 41 Julv 27 1850 to 8326431 July 18 1859 and 5404443 Januarv 23 1867 flom whlch It has var1ed but httle smce The demands upon an mstltutlon of lealn mg at the present tlme make a much larger endowment lmportant to 1fS highest useful ness In no better way could the former student show thelr grateful appreclatlon of the debt thev owe to the mstltutlon than by fakmg steps to mcrease lts endowment Monson owes much to the academy and to the public splrlted men who founded lt Let xt nevel be dlspersed Lecause of low' finances On Januarv 5, 1887 lt was voted that a sum not exceedlng S25 bc spent on the Academy grounds On Jan uary 4 1888 ll was voted to have an addltlonal Insurance not exceeding S1000 on the build mg In 1889 the expenses of the teachers were reduced to not less than S100 On Aprll 29 1891 510 was approprlated for setting up trees on the Academy ground In 1891 C E B Llbby was appomted Prlnclpal On July 1 1892 the nrst floor of the Academy was made mto two scnool rooms and the hlgh school room was calcmuned On Januarv 3 1894 S5 was appropliated for each of the three terms of scnool as prlzes for declamatlons one half to bovs and one half to gxrls In February 1895 S10 was approprlated for school paper On January 1 1896 S500 was added to the ln urance On January 25 1895 the spring term wa extended to ten weeks On January students of Monson vxllage Dramatic entertamment partlclpated m by scholars durmg school eason was abolxshed because yt tended to dlstract and mjure the school The Senior Class at the clo e of the spring term had to pass an examinatlon whlch would certify thelr fitness for graduatlon On January 16 1908 arrangements for a laboratory were made It was to be finished by the fall term 5100 was spent for lmprov mg the laboratory Athletic teams belonging to the Academy were allowed to be awav from school not ex ceedmg two weeks durmg the school year and were required to make up all lessons mlssed durmg that period Iwo dlplomas were granted unless the usual public graduation was held and all students had ranks of not less than 70 On January 26 1910 the Treasurer recexved S5 annually for h1s servlces March 16 1922 S100 was spent for electrlc llghts for the Academy On February 27 1924 the Academy bulldmg was remodeled S3000 wa spent on repalrs and the msurance on the bulldmg was ralsed to S10 000 Dudley Balley left all the books of hls lxb ary which related to the State of Maine to the Academy On June 18 1930 525 was approprxated for a prlze spealung contest in the Academv Dls trlbutyon of money was left to the Supenn tendent On June 17 1931 lt was voted to have Baccalaureate Sermon ln the Baptlst Church and hereafter held alternately be tween the Baptlst and Congregatlonal Churches It was voted to purcha e dlplomas each year as requlred On June 15 1932 Public Speaking was made compulsory for Freshman and Sophomore Classes On June 19 1941 S1000 special approprxatlon from the State was to be put on a Commumty Hall fund On June 'll 1944 the band stand was put on the Academy grounds In 1945 the treasurer was authorized tc let garden lots on Academy' lands and collect not less than S2 each The treasurers salarv was Increased to S10 annu ally On January 20, 1947 the teaching facultv of the
