' i O 0 ' ' - ' ' ' 3 I INPRAMURAL BASKETBALL This year, as in previous years, Monson Academy held its a.nnual Intramural Basketball '1ournament m the school gym fhis gave the boys who had not played varsity basketball a chance to exhibit their talents on the polished surface The opening day paved the way for a series of doubleheaders which were to follow The Cushman Capers put up an extraordinary zone defense but could not stop the Morris Maulers' ever flowing offense Phe Maulers thus won the first game of the tournament 28-17 Individual stars were Golden, Capra and Whalen In the second half of the twin bill, the Day Hop Dazzlers, led by Jimmy Swift, went on to defeat the Cushman Comets 31 29 in a thrilling overtime game Fbr the Comets, it was all Captain Coviello as he about the defeat of the 'Chapin Chuckers by a well-drilled Holmbrook Hell Raisersn quintet M1lty' Andrews was tops for the Chuckers, while Captain Langdon of the Raisers was the leading Holmbrooker Probably the best team in the league was defeated in the second game of the day The Morris Monkeys, who were stocked with stellar hoopsters, went on to receive a humbling defeat at the hands oi the Cushman Comedians The Comedians, led by Rufus Foley, scored an overwhelming triumph over the Monkeys 56-h2 The quarterfinals brought the Morris Maulers against the stunning Holmbrook Honeys Again, the Maulers, led by Dick Golden, went on to defeat the Honeys 30-17 'Ihe Honeys, h ever, were the best-dressed club in the league, as they wore pink two-piece bathing suits for uniforms Another Holmbrook team was defeated the same day so Coach Lawtorvs dreams of a pennant- winning team faded into nothingness The Hell Raisers were beaten by last year's finalists, the Homestead Hobos On the following day, before a packed house, the Faculty Flashes made their annual appearance in their flashy uniforms. 'Easy Henry Benton, Roaring Roan, Tapper Yetman, Speedy Howell and Swisher Strout were led onto the floor by their Captain, Tufts Rogers. Surprisingly enough this power-laden quintet was defeated by the Cushman Comedians, However, the chief highlight of the game went to the Flashes, as Tapper Yetman DUNICED in his annual two points. The semi-finals brought the Commuter Cowboys against the Morris Maulers, and the Honnstead Hobos against the Cushman Comedia.ns. The Maulers refused to crack under the pressure. They held a LL-point lead throughout the game and went on to win 29-27. The Hobos were not so fortunate in their encounter as they were beaten out in the final seconds by a couple of Perry Palme baskets. lhe 1-lobes led up to the two-minute mark, but it was here where Palmer personally took matters into his own hands and led the Comedians on to the finals. Under the tutelage of Mr. C. Dmmcan Yetman and Mr. Arthur J. Martellucci, the talented newsmen around the campus were given an oppor- tunity to display their literary talents. Gossip, sports and social events usually headlined the paper, while several exclusives were also rolled off the press. The seniors who wrote for five issues were well-rewarded at the end of the year, receiving gold pins with the inscription The Monson Spirit.
