l p f 1: of paw I sw, 1 Athletic 'Year AN athlete at Monson Academy must also be a scholar. To compete on school teams, one must maintain a satisfactory scholastic record. As Monson Academy is primarily a College Preparatory School, and owing to the fact that there is a small enrollment, athletics are considered a side issue. Consequently the game schedules are short. Because of these facts the teams place more emphasis upon good sportsmanship than victory. The games played, however, are none the less difficult for they are seldom played with any other than private schools, which usually put out excellent teams., . This year Monson Academy takes pride in the showing made by its various teams, and may well anticipate a creditable record in years to come. PAGE PIIFTY-ONE 1 v- .-- .A- 3956.-si . r X - . With E51 GQ the aim in mind of having a team that tackled cleanly and blocked effectively, a tack- X ling dummy was erected near the baseball stand. The effects of this incessant practice Q5 were noticable throughout the season. Ei? Q The squad of fourteen reported loyally for drill even without any hope of indulg- 6:5 ing in the pleasure of play as a real scrimmage was only possible by using a divided 743.1 V line. The theory that a few plays well learned and that a good offense is the best defense, Q bore fruit in our limited schedule played. The team acted as a unit in the game with the Monson Cardinals, showing an unexpected degree of facility with the forward pass. The Deerfield second team ap' Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q peared to be in mid-season form, with a fast running attack. An intercepted pass, and a long pass which Carsley caught high in the air while he was held by two opponents, turned the tide of victory. In his first real game of football, Watson demonstrated his ability as a 'fball hawk , covering every fumble made by either side. McClellan, who was elected captain on the noon of the Deerfield game, has lead his team to victory in our first game at Westminister. This game was featured by the vicious tackling of Squire and the brilliant offftackle runs of Bidwell. Time was called, as the team was on the opponent's five yard line after a clever fiftyfeight yard run by Bidwell made possible by Flynn's taking out three opposing tackles. The return Westminister game was heads-upn football. H. Carlson and Pendleton intercepted forward passes PAGE FIFTY-TWO Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q . Q H
