There are, however, milestones along the way that we can call attention to. ' From the records it appears that in 1804 there seemed a need for a new Academy between Westfield on the west and Leicester on the east. Both Monson and Brimfield were eager for the honor. One pledged as much money as the other, but the choice fell on Monson and the Commonwealth granted the new school an endowment of a half township in the then Province of Maine. The young people of Monson were in- duced to take up farms in this township and they went out as pioneers to clear the land and make homes for themselves. So far as any record shows there did not arise any large income from this source but it constituted the first endowment fund of the Academy. Dr. Hammond says in his historical address in 1854, Monson Academy had its origin, undoubtedly, in a general movement in favor of education which took place near the close of the eighteenth century and in consequence of which a distinct, and in some respects a peculiar class of schools was established, which then received the new and somewhat ambitious title of Academies. The Academy was not a local school but a State institution. It could receive its pupils from any town or State although it was established to meet the needs of a certain section of the State. The interests of the Academy were confided to a permanent board of trust like those of most colleges, composed of men of learning and substantial character. Only one name among the list of original trustees is repeated on the board of today 1-the name of Elynt. ln 1804 Rufus Elynt, in 1929 Henry N. Elynt, his great grandfsong and in between the stretch of years the son and grand-son of Rufus Elynt served as trustees, so for four generations the family has been connected with the board of trustees :-an unequalled record. Close to it is the name of Norcross, serving for three generations and in the early history of the school Joel Norcross is named as its largest benefactor. lt is impossible to measure service by years or generations but it seems fitting here to recall the long service of Dr. Alfred Ely in behalf of the church and school. A trustee for sixty years he gave liberally of himself and his means. To him is given the credit for the establishment of the Charity Fund, or Education Fund as it is now called. Its original purpose was to aid young men studying for the ministry but the Court has ermitted a freer use of the income in these later years. A fine portrait of Dr. Ely hangs in the Academy chapel and is familiar to the student body. Well might the student of today pause before it and say Great is the gift that I owe to you. . It is fitting here to mention the names of three other former trustees whose portraits also hang in the cha el 1-Hon. William N. Elynt, Mr. E. E. Morris, and Mr. C. W. Holmes, jr., each oipwhom showed his love and devotion to the school through long years of service. The Holmes name is associated with the Gymnasium and is still rep- resented on the board of trustees, Miss Esther R. Holmes being the only woman ever elected to that office. To her and to her family Monson Academy owes much of its present equipment and prosperity. As further evidence of the loyalty of the trustees during the one hundred and twenty-five years there have been but 11 presidents, 7 treasurers and 10 secretaries. A list of headmasters and instructors is of value but this is not the time for enum- erating them. Sufhce it to know that such a record is preserved and from this list no PAGE SEVEN Q 6 Qi E Qi Q Qi Q Qs Q Q Q Qi E gigs in 9 Q Qr Q Qs Q Qs Q Qs C Q Qs Q Qs Q Q QQ xl 'ff' ,,.. ,rw nnzvcrsfzrx-M190-I uudredth A I-I Une 1804 44 FQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ 503-B Y Q SCHOOL HISTORY-Continued l one can object to our pausing long enough to pay tribute to Dr. Charles Hammond, 7' Qi first a student and later principal for three different terms of service. Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q53 Q Q? Q Q? Q Q Q Q It is interesting to note that in the early days no Central Vermont Railroad dis- turbed the tranquility of the village. An early catalogue says, The stage goes from Springfield to Providence on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and returning the following days passes through Southbridge soon after the stage from Boston. The catalogue of today says, Excellent automobile roads converge near Palmer so that Monson may be reached in a day's travel from many points three hundred miles away. When the 150th anniversary comes around the catalogue may say, Ample facilities for landing are provided at the aviation field! Dr. Hammond thus concludes his address in 1854: The young in great numbers, from all parts of the land, will in all the future continue to carry from this institution, as we have carried, the pleasant remembrances of this pleasant vale, which will doubt- less be to many of them, as it may have been to some of us, like the happy valley of Rasselas, from whence he went forth, the young and ardent aspirant for the wisdom and honors of the world, to find, in his wanderings, no place on earth to him so lovely as the vale he had left. It is seventy-five years since Dr. Hammond wrote thus but again and again have returning alumni testified to their love for Dear old Monson. The original Academy building was built by general subscriptions. It was a square wooden building standing on the site of the present building and costing about S4000.00. In 1863, after the Academy had been closed temporarily because of the war, Dr. Hammond was induced to return for his third term as principal and the building was enlarged by the addition of two wings. In 1886 this original building was burned and the future looked uncertain but funds were raised and from the ruins arose the building of today. In 1888 Dr. Hammond's old home was purchased to provide a residence for the headmaster and accommodations for other teachers and students. While the property was thus used it was designated as Hammond Hall. Then in 1900 came the gift of the Holmes Gymnasium, followed in 1903 by the erection of Cushman Hall. When this building was ready for occupancy Hammond Hall passed out of existence and in PAGE NINE Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q2 Q QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ gg E021 GQ 7 Q SCHOOL HISTORY-Continued Q53 Q its stead came Hammond Place, the present attractive home of the headmaster, In 6.5 1911 the Trustees received the gift of Cushman Field and in 1927 the gift of the an Morris House, so that comparing the equipment of today with the modest building it QQ of 1804 the Academy has come a long way. Holmes deeded to the Trustees of Monson Academy, Morris House, and gave a generous sum of money to make this frame structure com- pletely modern. The remodelling was done and the dwelling has made an ideal place for living this last year. The edifice itself has more of the appearances of a home than do structures built originally for dormitory purposes. The truth remains that more is required for a pleas- ant living abode than four walls-no matter how beautiful they may be. The spirits within make the allfimportant contribution. They must be congenial and willing to cooperate, and so they have been this last year in Morris House. There have been small disagreements. Such are to be expected. No stratum of society is without them. We all realize that certain sensitive spots must be touched occasionally in the ordinary routine and that certain restrictions are necessary for the provision of the right at- mosphere of periodic study. In a nutshell, ten Seniors, a bachelor master, and a newly married master in his apartment on the first floor, during the school year of 1928-29 have used this quaint old house on the hill as the place of all trades-studying, yarning, and playing the usual games, and will no doubt have many happy reminiscences of it in the future. HQQQQQQQ QQQQQQQQQQ Class History As the excitement caused by the arrival of the Harmonica died away and the crowd ED that had gathered to see it, slowly disappeared, two city fed youths were left standing on the platform. After some deliberation each came to the conclusion that Qt they were going to the same place. Acquainting themselves they started down the dusty road which led, they knew not where, but as it was the only one they had no 5 other choice. After some trudging, they succeeded in arriving in front of Cushman Hall, and here they hesitated not knowing whether to go in or turn around and run. Qt However, they were relieved of this embarassment when a man opened the door and E9 welcomed them in. These lads were Jack Gardiner and Nlouse Bacon. These two boys with four others formed the nucelous of the class of 1929. By the end of two weeks these six boys had found their stride and were progressing with a steady pulliwhich most of them maintained throughout the school year. Al- Qr Q Q thou h this was the first time most of them had been to boarding school, it did not QE interfere with their taking an active part in the school activities. The vice-president Q and treasurer of the Debating Club was chosen from this class, and it was also repref EE sented on athletic teams. At the end of the year they disbanded assuring each other that Q next September would find them all gathered together again. Qt Q The next year only half of the class returned, but with the enrollment of Sidney E9 Carsley, Newton Carlson, john Flynn, Raymond Gray, Sibley Squire, Kibball Shaw, Q and Sydney Pendleton, this class was counterbalanced. From this group the school re- Q 4 ceived strong support as there were several lettermen. Athletics were not the only in- Qi terest of the newcomers. For every club and activity of the school contained members Q of this class. Of course, we can't all be perfect, but nevertheless our scholarship was Q far from mediocre. Q All through the summer of 1928, our little group eagerly counted the days that Q remained before they could return to school with the privilege of calling themselves seniors. Q QQ lt was not long, after the resumption of classes that Sydney Pendleton, Newton Carlson, and John Gardiner were elected to the student council. Things in general Q looked very Cpromising. The football team was the best that the new Academy had 1 produced an at Thanksgiving an extra holiday was granted for unusual scholarship. Q With the exception of the big dance, these are the fall terms outstanding features. Q Q Scarlet fever was the big event in the period following Christmas and while quaran- ' tined the seniors introduced inter-class contests. President Gardiner called the Debating Q5 Society together for several meetings and the basketball season, which was almost EE completed before the plague set in, is recorded as the most successful. Q In spring young men's thoughts turn to love but our seniors began to think of Q5 college. Everybody became studious, strange to say, but still the class was well rep- Q resented in outside activities. For example we might mention the orchestra, glee club, Q dramatic club and baseball team. Q15 But we almost forgot to mention the three additions to the class namely: Edward E9 Williams, Robert Beecher, and later a Humphrey Nolen. EQQQQQQ classes. We are proud of the fact that we are the first class to be organized with We sincerely hope that some of our suggestions will be followed by succeeding officers and that this year-book has been published. 0 lt is true that all of us have not taken the complete course at Monson but never- Q1 theless we will be proud to consider ourselves graduates. Nevertheless, the boys, as they have joined our class and V33 Q3 school, have fallen in line with the movement to start the school in the right way. IQ 3 They are the real leaders of the school, 'and next year, when they become seniors, it 7' l will be nothing unusual for them to take the lead in important matters concerning G3 QQ school-life, and in placing men on the athletic teams. The class, while in the third Q 3 form, furnished the school with the manager of Basketball and Baseball, and also C Q Elled many athletic positions. This last year, among the notables of the school, who L49 3, Q were second classmen, were the Football captain, Basketball captain, and Basketball manager. 4' Q' Q Next year, the class will have no difhculty in continuing the high standards set F3 Q up by the first senior class of the new school, which have been followed by both the Q 6 other senior classes since then. The requirements of a class are more than just to put LID ' men on teams, in clubs, and make them leaders of the school. Each week there is Qi posted a rank list which always has contained, high up, the names of members of the ,f,,, 6 Class of 1930. To be real leaders, boys should excel in studies. And that is the main E3 desire of the second classmen. This will make the school known for scholarship rather ug than merely for athletics. Cur first endeavors were, of course, insignificant, but soon we began to take an active part in school activities. For example, the officers of the junior Debating Society were for the most part selected from our ranks. In the ensuing years, we have seen our representatives holding positions of in- fluence in school. Most notable perhaps is the fact that the Senior Debating Society has always included a member of the class of 1931 among its oificers. Continually gaining in prestige, the class of 1931 will be able to lead the school in a manner similar to that of the preceding classes. Accordingly an assembly is called by Mr, Strohmeier and nominations for the ofhce are called for. lt is the custom to first elect three of the five members from the Senior Class and after a period of about three weeks the remaining two members are elected-this time from the Junior Class. The five members then hold a meeting and elect a chairman. The Chairman then takes charge of the Council and calls meetings regularly every week and oftener if there be need for it. There are two principal duties of the Council of Monson Academy. The hrst is to assist the faculty in seeing that school rules are carried out. The second is to make the student's life and work honorable, profitable, and pleasant. PAGE FORTY'TI-IREE ' ' YY Y Y ff v Y Qi QP hiv Qi ii? To compete on school teams, one must maintain a satisfactory scholastic record. As Monson Academy is primarily a College Preparatory School, and owing to the fact that there is a small enrollment, athletics are considered a side issue. Consequently the game schedules are short. Because of these facts the teams place more emphasis upon good sportsmanship than victory. The games played, however, are none the less difficult for they are seldom played with any other than private schools, which usually put out excellent teams., . This year Monson Academy takes pride in the showing made by its various teams, and may well anticipate a creditable record in years to come. PAGE PIIFTY-ONE 1 v- .-- .A- 3956.-si . r X - . With E51 GQ the aim in mind of having a team that tackled cleanly and blocked effectively, a tack- X ling dummy was erected near the baseball stand. The effects of this incessant practice Q5 were noticable throughout the season. Ei? Q The squad of fourteen reported loyally for drill even without any hope of indulg- 6:5 ing in the pleasure of play as a real scrimmage was only possible by using a divided 743.1 V line. The theory that a few plays well learned and that a good offense is the best defense, Q bore fruit in our limited schedule played. The team acted as a unit in the game with the Monson Cardinals, showing an unexpected degree of facility with the forward pass. The Deerfield second team ap' Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q peared to be in mid-season form, with a fast running attack. An intercepted pass, and a long pass which Carsley caught high in the air while he was held by two opponents, turned the tide of victory. In his first real game of football, Watson demonstrated his ability as a 'fball hawk , covering every fumble made by either side. McClellan, who was elected captain on the noon of the Deerfield game, has lead his team to victory in our first game at Westminister. This game was featured by the vicious tackling of Squire and the brilliant offftackle runs of Bidwell. Time was called, as the team was on the opponent's five yard line after a clever fiftyfeight yard run by Bidwell made possible by Flynn's taking out three opposing tackles. The return Westminister game was heads-upn football. H. Carlson and Pendleton intercepted forward passes PAGE FIFTY-TWO Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q . Q H Ita Q ei fi? Qu Q in Q Io 9? As a result of such a victory the team was grateful recipients of blankets given by Mr. Brainard. I The last game of the season, at Deerfield, was the most bitterly fought game of the year. lt was straight grueling football, keen but hard. Bidwell, right half-back, was removed from the game in the second period because of a strained neck. Every mem- ber of the team gave his best in a vain attempt to wrest victory from defeat. The season was just like that, a season marked by highspirited struggle and wholesome sport, with a team acting as an integrated unit. The prospect for next year depends on what the summer and normal growth brings. It will have to be a new machine as most of last year's team will be graduated in June. Regardless of the men, it is hoped that the school will be fortunate enough to have Mr. Wood back next year. This game was of a mediocre sort, the score being at half time Q ,Q 7-5 in Wilbraham's favor. Then, as usual, the team came out at the beginning of the Q second half and did play a little basketball to win the tilt 18-14. Nevertheless it was Q our first victory away from home and the school realized it, as they were given a QF Roman Holiday on the afternoon after the victory, Wednesday. 'Log IG As the team had held the Deerfield team down pretty well, when they invaded the l Holmes Gymnasium, it was felt that they would bid fairer than the last two basket- Q, Q ball teams of the new school had done at Deerfield. Althouigh there was not much im- C 6 provement over the other bids, the team deserves a great eal of credit in putting up E13 I such a fight to a team that could easily win by a score of 54-20. Q With two men on the bench for studies and sickness, Monson stepped out of the QP Y Pre and High School rank and played the Monson Cardinals, a town team, who E3 IQ!!! took us into camp by a score of Z8-16. Another fine game was the second American International College game played at Qi Q the Monson Gym. The team showed that they had enough left for the second half as 'P Q51 they broke a dead lock at the half way mark of 16-16 to win by a score of 37-27. Q3 Last year the team had been beaten by Suffield School by a very small margin, so Q, this ear's team went out to aven e it. B ver ood laying the team beat them 30-19, Y g Y Y g CF 1 thus playing the last game ofthe season, as it prove to be on account of sickness. The W I6 game that was due to be played the next week in Suffield would have been a very Q close one, the winner unknown until the last whistle had been blown. It-QE The team was led in points by Syd. Carsley who scored 111 points. Next came lp 55.51 Cobb, who had been out a few games, with 55 points. These, with the other letter l ' P37 Q men went to make up the 235 points that the Monson team ran up against their Op- Q, U ponents 255. P 3 The entire sciuad is very grateful for the never-failing efforts of Mr. Conrad. Also IFE I6 they are thankfu to the parents who made the new uniforms possible. The letter men Q feel that a word of praise is due the men who came out to practice every day and thereby Qt 1 gave the opposition necessary for the formation of a strong team. How- ever, we have six members of last year's team, N. Carlson, H. Carlson, Flynn, K. Shaw, F. Bidwell, S. Pendleton, who will form the nuceleus of this year's team. The vacancies caused by graduation will probably be capably filled by such new material as Cobb, Locke, Nolen, McClellan, Flynt, and Ellis.
