VARSITY FOOTBALL The 1981-82 Monsignor Farrell Varsity Football team, on the heels ofa dramatic change in coaching from a most successful Dennis Barrett to a first year head coach in Ben Sarullo, had what has fast become a typical Farrell season. They walked through any competition their division was able to give, and went on to win their division title while being rated 1 in the city. They then went on to the playoffs, where they met a tough Holy Cross team, and lost a heart-breaker, 6-0, and were eliminated from the playoffs. It was a game everyone felt Farrell could've won and maybe one they shoul've won. Off the field the Lions were led by Coach Sarullo and his staff, but on the field they were led by captains Jack Valinoti and Anthony DiTomasso. Jackie, starting for his third straight year at quarterback, had a noteworthy season which saw him lead the league in passing while bettering the career mark for passing yardage, previously held by John Skronski. Dito, in his second year at middle linebacker, had a steadily spectacular season, dominating defensive play from sideline to sideline. Offensively, whenever Valinoti was forced to put the ball in the air, it usually landed in the sure hands ofJu- nior Tim Finnigan or Seniors Bobby Redican and Greg Smith with speedsters John Murphy and Kevin Bruns fSeniors bothj ready at all times. Valinoti wasn't forced to throw all that often as the running combination of Chris Tillo and Caesar Revano, Mr. Outside and Mr. Inside, was as good as any in the league, and will be returning next year intact, as they are both Juniors. Those two were aided by Sophomore Tony Lopresti, who will certainly be a force for opposing coaches to think about in his remaining two years. As good as that backfield was, without an offensive line as formidable as Farrell had, the Lions' offense would not have been as productive as it was. The line was anchored by Seniors Mike Strype, Steve Riccardi, Greg Alvarez, Paul Mandile, Tony Schwarz and Tom Sanicola with Juniors Chris Farrell and Chris Desantis filling in whenever called upon. As productive as the offense was, Farrell's season wouldn't have been as successful as it was were it not for the stingy play of the defense. Led by DiTommaso, this unit was among the best in the league and as good as any Farrell has produced in years, which is saying something. The steady play of Senior linemen Bob Holdman, Chris Keane, Tom Bianchi, Joe Tomasulo and Paul Gardner, along with Juniors Steve Abati and Frank DiTommaso, provided constant pressure in opposing backfields and made anyones running game an impossibility. Linebackers Mark-Cutaneo, Ray Dolan and DiTommaso made it as difficult to pass on Farrell as the line made it to run. Any thought ofthrowing deep by opposing coaches proved to be costly as defensive backs Sean Slattery, Harry Gumb, Jimmy Vanacore, Chris Langan fall Seniorsj and Juniors Rich Cardinali and George Quinn also specialized in picking off passes. . The Lions were very fortunate to have an exceptional coaching staffled by Coach Sarullo fwho performed as if he had been a head coach all his lifej. He was aided by fine, young assistant coaches like Lou Baldassano foffensive and defensive linemenj, Gerry Hartie fdefensive backsj, and Gene Lopes foffensive backfieldj. The coaching staff and all the players would like to thank Br. Jeffery Oxx, who gave freely and generously of his time in an effort to help the team in any way he could. Congratulations also to Anthony DiTommaso, Jackie Valinoti, Tom Bianchi, Steve Riccardi, Tony Schwarz, Steve Abati, Chris Tillo, Rich Cardinali and George Quinn for being named to the CHSAA league all-star team.
