For strong and fearless are our gallant heroes, O'er land and sea their banners greet the sky, In undimmed glory spread across the heavens, Truth, liberty, and home cannot die. Although at honor's call We pledge our heart's blood To flag and country on the fields of fame, Another cause, more sacred than the home-land Must fire our souls with its consuming flame. The Godless state! A ship Without a rudder- A cause that fails to reach the inmost soul! For God and Flag and Home must be our watchword That victory become a worthy goal. M. Ernest Wilson I 'x .1 To the Graduating Class of 1945: Now you have reached a milestone in the perfection of your spiritual, mental and physical development for God, and country. Yours is a great task. May you fulfill it graciously and meri- toriously. May this pictorial review bring memories of gaiety, hard work and the spirit of activity of your high school life. May your ingress into life be glorious, but your arrival at the home of God even more triumphant. Editor-in-Chief Robert Simpson dministratinn mu 9 450 + 64? A period of reference to the map of life, to the course chartered for us at Baptism, in the Catholic home, in the school, in the Catholic Church. THE WAY For man is prone to evil from his youth. Principles are often abandon- ed, the chartered way left for a more attractive one. Hence the Retreat, the re-checking of the course. Hence the Retreat annually, for the longer one travels the wrong road, the harder the return. The road markers- the Decalogue and the Precepts of the Church. The guidefefthe Reverend loseph F. Hanna, C.S.C. The time-P-alvfonday, Tuesday and Wednesday of Holy Week, March 26-27-28. RESULTS 'Three days of thoughtful, prayerful silence. Peace and happiness in the eyes of every student. Passing clouds of worry and anxiousness soon dispelled in Confession, in Holy Communion. Then the resolutions, the re- newal of Baptismal Vows, the Papal Benediction, the hope and assurance that all is well, that the journey may be continued. Finally, the bidding to go forth to the daily fight, to the battle which none can fight for us, the conflict which we wage not alone but under the Leader who had fought and vanquished, and under Whom we cannot fail. This, together with a change in printers, paved the way for other innovations which promoted the appearance of the newspaper. Throughout the year the staff sought to use all the opportunities afforded it to pro- duce a thoroughly readable pub- lication. Above all, the expression of principlesfesuch as had been held so high by Coyle men in previous yearsfwas carried on with re- newed vigor. Realizing that the school newspaper has a lot to do with setting the tone of the school, the editors tried to permeate all the writings with a spirit of Chris- tian thinlcing. lt can be said that their aim for the CQYLE WAR- RIQR Uto be a reproduction in words of our school, of our Chris- tian education, and thence of Christ ..has been carried through. Charles Kent llramatics This year the Dramatic Club presented ' two comedies, Moliere's 'llmaginary ln- validf' and Conrad Seiler's Our Girls. As an innovation, girls from Saint Mary's Dramatic Club protrayed the fem- inine roles. This was a step in progress since the feminine roles in Moliere's classic were difficult and the boys could not do justice to them. Coyle play goers re- sponded appreciatively. Concerning the play, Miss Maydelle Murphy in her week- ly column Library Corner in the Taun- ton Daily Cfazette wrote: Nl saw the Clm- aginary lnvalidl given with gusto Monday night at Monsignor Coyle High School. The young actors had a merry time on the stage and the audience shared their joy. The set was colorful, the grouping most pleasing, and the acting remarkably good. Petruccelli in his title role and Barbara Scully as Toinette, the maid, played broad comedy with adroitness. lt is a pleasure to see the classics step down from the library shelves and to watch them come alive under skillful direction. 'lQur Girls a farce comedy was equally enjoyed by Coyle play goers. lt was a fresh, new angle on the old theme of boys masquerading as girls which made it a genuinely funny comedy. The girls of Saint Mary's shared the roles. Sincere interpretation of individual parts brought success to the Dramatic Club this year. The members came closer to the ideal that drama as an art must be alive. The Warriors of this season have carved an impressive niche upon the sport records of Coyle. The football eleven wielded much power in the fall of '44 with their hard hitting line and alert, swift backfield. These boys worked hard and earned the success which they made on Saturday afternoons. Most of the boys were playing their last season for the school and this may have tended to give them added vigor in their tilts. Coyle fans for a long time will remember the downfield blocking of Donelan and Bob 0'Connell, the hard- hitting Maghery and Donahue, and the work of Zolnoski and Simmons. The hard running of Herb O'Connell, Prairie's passing, Zagrodney's line plunging and Dooley's field generalship. Varsity Football Coyle Attleboro O H. O'Connell 9? The Blue and Gold quintet met with much success until their clash with an outstanding Fairhaven combine. Yet they broke back into the win column. Their fighting spirit burned strong in all games and tor every second of the tilts. This year witnessed the initiation of a third annual clash between the intra-city rivals Tauntcn and Coyle-was a memorial to Lieut. lames Mulcahy. The warriors won the first of this series but the Orange and Black came out on top in the next two clashes. Sports fans will long remember the sharp-shooting of Ed Mooney and Scup Hoye, the passworlc of McMullen and Moran, and defensive work of O'Conne1l, Walsh and Simmons. Also to be remembered are Foley, Roy, O'Neil, and Donnelly. Fre- quent shifts in lineup did not detract from Coyle power.
