1 I mt We See Each Other: Eyes, (in the early sun cold bright bustle and dew of education mornings, still slept-shut like unwakened - - - flowers; or looking at the back side of a school day as it limps away and the dust settles, stung in white smog like a shot of right guard in the eye) Looking and sometimes, maybe, Seeing. ■dm:. mm r rM jHBP. 1 7 , ' ' 9 ' S V ' j mill ' 1 1 1 - ' • 3, l M M 1 ■rgk ww n ' ' jtfBfi 11 1 If ■m7 ■j .j Mi ! 1 |j(m rt ' y  .. y ll (, 4 m i M J • WT ' f i35? What about that moment of thought? It was in class when, by a teacher. Your attention was fished for; and being uncaught, your eyes swam around the room looking for something to interest them. (Finding nothing, they settled for a dream.) And at lunch, in the crowd a word was spoken: It meant something to you a long time ago when it was deciphered. Thoughts can sink even through the paper bag - jelly - coke lunchtime atmosphere and land on a large fragment of nothing In particular. Or on a piece of past fabric. • ■■•Tiii.™lilr - - ' •: Maes . tfj- A ' SS ' . The pale slab of light diminishes and disappears. And the lonely why continues to gnaw. i a i 14 You Can Look Now Remember a school year Ink-written black in the bearded eyes that really stared, or in the ones that smiled, or with long up-filling drinks of water. Things that kept us filled up; zemis, successful tests, a smile. (There was sometimes GLAD in the midst of Habit; And we could see others, and they us, so.) And it is the bearded, smiling, drinking-up ones that are seen, when looking through the fallout and hearing the last Thunder leave. On the end of a toy telescope looked through is stuck the little circular scene, THEN, and it may be smiling BECAUSE life can be very, very good. We ' ve observed their red A ' s on pelling tests and achievements in extra-curricular activities. We ave admired and envied. Ve have come to know Steve ' s toothy grin and Emily ' s Mona Lisa smile. Some of Steve ' s intelligence is carried in a Samsonite brief- case, but most of it comes impressively pouring out whenever he opens his mouth. Emily impresses in a quieter, more mellow way, with a lowering of the eye lids and a raising of the brow. Steve will probably be the first U.S. President ever to come from Monrovia, and Emily will be . . . well, Emily will be Emily. Ulrike ' s village of Westerholt is so tiny that she went to school in a nearby town. Languages are Ulrike ' s interest and she hopes to be an inter- preter. Although she finds the social life very dif- ferent, there is no homesickness and she ' s happy here. Christina comes from another small town — Heby, Sweden. She watches soccer whenever she can. Her command of the English language is so good that she even speaks it in her sleep. She doesn ' t have much experience with polar bears, though. Carlos has already graduated in Quezon City, the Philippines, but is taking another year of high school for the experience. He really enjoys the freedoms in the U.S. and hopes to return here to stay. Company, once removed, is far worse than the basic loneliness of never having known. And scattered remnants of laughter return to plague the memory. There are birds singing outside, but the sun is halfway round the other side of the world. Even that sound does not penetrate the walls. Only the intangible, almost sounds hover in the room. They will fade in time, but for now they linger to prick emotions. Various activities and achievements resulted from these two individuals, good people. She is aw fully popular, and too, she gets offices and awards: DAR, Madquin President, Girls ' State, Girls ' League. Pete, of course, is ASB President, a Monarc, a bas- ketball person, a stealer of Swiss cow bells and Roman marble fragments from the catacombs. Both these people were unanimous choices for this Outstanding position. Tables are sat on, muscles are flexed, pictures snapped. This is the blue, the yonder one. And there is a sameness, the insan- ity muffled or fattened into submission, into lameness. Animal-ness, smiles, boredom, all float together in an atmosphere tempered, one restrained. We collide with the debris that makes us sit or laugh, and with each other. In the smog tainted blue of Monrovia yonder, screaming in its hush. It doesn ' t hurt to wear a hood or a hat . . . or to say, I see you or you say you see me. Blue is a tranquil color, and blue people end up as happy farmers. THE TAMED BLUE YONDER 61 J 62 4 t R Over The Fence Sneering? Or smearing laughter all over the lens? Fall Show The M.H.S. stage never saw such a dilemma! Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when first we prac- tice to deceive. Charley ' s Aunt was definitely tan- gled as the fall production. Grainne Ward started the whole mess, almost caus- ing Tom Osbrink and Terry Arko to lose Maureen Yel- len and Tina Bradford. Of course, if Albert Mendez and Mike West hadn ' t both fallen for John Eddings the problem could have been simpler, especially since Alice Tankersley had been involved all along. Robert Vella just stood and watched. Director, Mrs. Conyers and her student assistant, Karla Carlson, went slightly mad, but they are all right now. Mr. Phil Rope was technical director, with Phil Serjeant as stage manager and Mark Johnson as key grip. Once upon a time there was a musical version called Where ' s Charley? in which Ray Bolger sang a nice song, Once in Love with Amy. 114 PERFORMING ARTS HEADS Ah! The tempermentol artists, guides of the rowdy, creative sports. Mrs. Anna Mae Conyers forms dramatics out of wild antics. Messrs Don Dagne, David Stensky, and Mike Flemming bring harmony to the musical groups; Mrs. Linda Simmons directs the vocal contingent; and Mrs. Linda Westin makes dancing lovlies out of the most uncoordi- nated. It is the unfortunate fate of Mr. Phil Rope and stage crew to handle all these nuts simultaneously. 115 DR. On that day, after perfect Mission Valley League season of 9-0, hopes for a championship season were shattered. From the opening kickoff in the first week of school, it was appar- ent that Coach Tom Paton would be having another winning year. There was an atmosphere of excitement, a feeling of winning in the air. The Varsity team, sporting the San Gabriel Valley Back of the Year, Obie Graves, Lineman of the Year, Victor Hos- kins, and Player of the Year, Dale Bunn; along with out- standing line and other members could assure themselves a CIF birth with no League losses to sulk about. After three games into CIF, the rest seemed to be downhill, until that Friday, the 1 3th, at the Santa Ana Bowl for the Semi-Finals. It was the 1 3th game of the season, played on the 1 3th! The Cats were incredible the entire season, especially consid- ering their size, the biggest being 1 90 pounds. They all had guts. They had direction. They had Dale Bunn, Obie Graves, Jerry McDonald, and John Clark. There were those who didn ' t get their names mentioned in the newspapers, but the entire unit worked as a team for another exciting football season. There were no complaints. There was no depression. We had a team of winners again.  ; k : I, MARTY CORDELL JOHN CLARK DALEBUNN m DOUG HAWTHORNE MIKE HAGEDORN jerry Mcdonald 134 CAT STATS Monrovia — 30 La Puente — 6 Monrovia — 22 West Torrance — 1 7 Monrovia — 43 Mt. At the beginning of the sea- son, the defense couldn ' t put it together, but after making changes in a couple of positions, the ' Cats started to play tough, under Coach Hooven ' s coaching. Offense was good but really couldn ' t seem to shine as the defense did. Passing was fair, the running attack adequate; put together they hung on. The Kittens were a strong team with the addition of all their new coaches. The Sophs, too, were a strong team and showed it with their 68-0 score over San Gabriel. But the fantastic wins were not con- sistent, and the Sophs did not go undefeated. Frosh League Co-Champs The Frosh Kittens were outstanding! They ended their season as Co-Champs of the Mission Valley League. The Kittens were led by Coach Byron Greer, who really has his men and season together, this statement reflected in their really fine record of 6-1. The out- standing offense and defense of this freshman team really paid off. TOP ROW: Robinson, Williams, Johnson, Reynolds, Hurst, Cummins, Miller, Scott, Larve, Larson, Coach — Bill Welcher. Virgil Stevens, middle initial C, has been at MHS longer than any other person around. He even went to high school here. He ' s a modest man and doesn ' t often pat himself on the back. So others, present and ex-students, have said: He ' s most knowledgeable. At one meet in high school, he placed in seven field events. He ' s not just outstanding at school; he ' s outstanding as a commu- nity member; he was head of Parks and Recreation for a long, long time here in Monrov ' . He ' s with it! Water Polo Coach Doug Stewart Dunked; Tucker Alexander His Flashiest Fish The team justified it as team unity. And it was tossing first-year Coach Doug Stewart into the pool whenever there was a win. During the season there were only four dunkings, but, as these pictures attest, the four were joyous events. The four wins were an improvement over last year, however. Outstanding players on the Varsity were Tucker Alexander, John Snelson, Dale Dahl- berg, Owen Lubow and Dean Jackson. The Frosh Soph team did well this season, and there are some excellent hopefuls for the Varsity Cat Fish next year, especially Jimmy Alexander, Paul Bullock, Tim Trevino and Mike Naus. U3 Coach Arvin Wenzelberg . Varsity Basketball Into CIF Playoffs Arvin ' s Army went through a hard fought season, toughly into the CIF Playoffs. During this season there was much success like the winning of the Nogales Tournament, where awards were received by Tim White, Dale Bunn, and Eric Chi Ids for their exellent play. The League season ended 1 1 and 3, which was good enough for the CIF berth in the Playoff. The Wildcats were thought to have slim chances against Camarillo, a highly touted team, but the Cats scratched and clawed to overcome a deficit and tie the game at 56 all with two minutes left. The breaks went Camarillo ' s way in the last two minutes for a 66 to 58 victory, ending a memorable season. . and his army 144 ABOVE: DaleBunn Vince Duron David Francis MIDDLE: Eddie Garrett Tom Hearing BELOW: Jack Ryan Soiester Johnson Tim White 145 Fred Bourne Dale Bunn Eric Child Marty Cordell 146 : ■HOOVEN ' S JV TEAM ■MVL BASKETBALL CHAMPS FRONT: Vince Anderson, Reynard Reynolds, Jerry Alford, Reggi Pickett, Claude Selmo, Bret Zim- merman BACK: Randy Scrugham, Arthur Otis, Lonnie Dorch, Pierre Houbein, David Parker, Richord Fonta- not, James Williams BELOW: The Trophy Winners LEFT: Dwayne Williomi, Sophomore Basketball Star 147 JV Baseball FRONT: Tony Eperson Tony Alpi Steve Yellen Stan Polasik Craig Heslop Rick Williams BACK: Coach Walski Charlie Hupp Ronnie Gavan Jerry Cummins Curtis Powell Jim Howard Ricky Price Richard Fontenot Jeff Walski ' ? • ' ff _- ■' «• i law v v 148 Varsity Basebal FRONT: Fred Bourne TonyTapia Richard Spicer David Montoya John Gonzales David Bau JimMinerd BACK: Dale Bunn Jack Ryan Brad Baxter Ron Wooster Tom Herring Rick Massro Steve Conroy John Clark Frosh Baseball FRONT: Gary Stultz, Wendle Griffith, Chris Corps, Tim Crandle, Jack Giacalone, Patrick Clark, Randy Idrell. Pasquale, 49, officially leaves the Banning district June 30. He begins working in Lima the fol- lowing week. Pasquale, who has been Ban- ning superintendent for more than seven years, announced his resignation at a time when the district is involved in difficult ne- gotiations with its teachers over a contract for the current school year. An impasse was declared last September in negotiations be- tween the district and teachers. The two sides have met with a fact-finder from the state Public Employee Relations Board and a decision is expected later in the month. Last December, the Banning Teachers Association, by a vote of 127 to 6, supported a no-confi- dence vote against Pasquale and Assistant Superintendent James Heslop. Pasquale said the troubled negotiations affected his decision to leave. But he said his prime consideration in looking for an- other job was that his wife, Sher- ry, wanted to move. This has always been my town. About two years ago, my wife and I decided we should find our town. He contacted International Schools Services a year ago. The Fred Pasquale organization notified him of the opening in Peru and on March 26 he flew to the South American city for an interview. Pasquale said he returned Sunday with a verbal agreement to accept the job at the school, which has 1,300 students. He said a contract is being prepared by the school. The school educates children from kindergarten through high school. Most stu- dents pay tuition. He said about half the stu- dents are American. He said he will take a month off from his Banning position to visit Lima and make arrange- ments for next school year. Pas- quale said he will return to work in Banning on June 1. Pasquale has an annual sala- ry of about $54,000 in his current position. He said he will receive a considerable increase in pay in his new job but declined to be specific. The Banning superintendent said he is anxious to reach a contract agreement with the Ban- ning Teachers Association. I ' m determined before I leave to set- tle negotiations. He said the contract prob- lems have affected the education at local schools. I regret we were unable to resolve the differences in a professional manner. When that happens, the kids suffer. That bothers me more than anything. ' Pasquale said his accomplish ments in his Banning tenure in elude a better attitude among stu dents, a tougher disciplinary pro gram and an upgrading of school buildings. We ' ve worked very hard. I feel we ' ve made some progress. He said the district will have no trouble finding a qualified re- placement. This is a good school district and an excellent job.
