Ten years earlier, in order to attract homeseekers to his new town, W. N. Monroe, the founder of Monrovia, had established an elementary school, for he had soon learned that the American people were not interested in a com- The first high school classes were held in the two- story frame building erected on the corner of May- Q ig . gi sb. The first graduates, Carrol Fowler and Ida Whit- tington, were graduated in 1895. During the past fifty-year period over 4,000 young people have grad- uated from the high school while over 1,000 others have entered as freshmen and either moved away or dropped by the wayside. In 1903 the high school moved to Ivy Avenue, first occupying the frame building pictured on Page 9, then the plastered brick building shown on the same page. In 1920 both Duarte and Arcadia became name was changed to the Monrovia-Arcadia-Duarte High School. In 1929 the school was moved again, this time to Colorado and Madison Avenues, the present site, which contains approximately twenty- five acres of land. The high school is proud of its graduates and proud ' of the record being made by former students in the present World War. To these graduates and former students, both in and out of the armed forces, we wish a full life and good luck. A. K. Wilson. The students of Monrovia-Arca- dia-Duarte High School, both past and present, will endorse our choice. ln his many years of service, we recognize his sincerity and ever-willing efforts to advance and develop our school and student activi- ties. THE EDITOR SUPERINTENDENT ARTHUR K. WILSON Yes, it was fifty years ago this school year that the voters of Monrovia de- cided to organize a public high school district. So enthusiastic were the people that they overwhelmingly voted Mon- rovia High School into existence. On these pages we have attempted to por- tray some of the changes that have taken place through the years. When the final plans were brought together, a high school second to none was the result. ln the past fifty years boys and girls have entered its portals to re- ceive of its enlightenment and to pass on through as men and women big enough to face the world ahead. Many fond memories were left behind: but better still, they took with them the dreams of the future for which their Alma Mater had prepared them. I THE AHlIHITECT'S DREAM Now again-there is a need for better men to free the world of its would-be dictators. As always, M.A.D. has risen to the occasion. Its students are taking courses useful in a post-war period. Men and women who have left school are taking their stands in the front lines. We say- More power to them. Myron, with the help of Miss Mary Wittler, and with the aid of his staff, composed of many new writers and a few experienced ones, has done wonders with the paper. Ginny, with her social column, has scooped all the romances and break-ups: Bill and Bob, in their weekly column, have covered the sports successfully. VARSITY FUUTBALL Coach Oliver, taking over the post of varsity football coach this year, proved what he could do with a small, fast team. In an abbreviated program, as a result of war transportation difficulties, Monrovia's varsity eleven won two out of five games, to place themselves third in the League. They found themselves matched against much larger teams but fought back with every bit of scrap they had in them. With ten returning lettermen, next year's team promises to be championship material. BEE FIIIJTBALL The B Football team began this year with only one returning letterman. Undaunted by this fact, the squad of new material practiced faithfully under their new coach, Steve Stevens. Against strong opposition they never gave up and many times showed promise of being real winners. Well, fellows, some one had to win and if it can't be us it might as well be somebody else. i941 Monrovia Monrovia Monrovia Monrovia Monrovia BEE SCORES 6 Alhambra I2 0 Mark Keppel 6 6 Montebello l2 6 El Monte 27 0 Covina 7 IN VABIUIIS BUIJY BUILDING l951 VABSITY BASKETBALL LETTEBMEN Bob Anderson, Bob Clare, Dick Felberg, Stanley McClintic, Bob Mott, Arnold Murfett, Bob Shipley, Don Slater, Tom Steinle, Charles Vogel. Eight boys were lost via the draft or enlistment. To make another dent in our already shaken team, we lost our only experi- enced group at mid-year graduation. The boys who represented us in the last half deserve our commendation for going on game after game and putting up a marvelous fight to the very last. Winning 9 out of their l2 games, Coach Virgil Stevens' B Casaba tossers came through the season tying with Alhambra for the Championship of the San Gabriel Valley league. With Capt. Ward Kent sparking the team, the basketball fans were thrilled at the fine display of teamwork, good sportsmanship, and coordination shown by our truly great players. Along with Capt. Ward Kent, the only returning letterman from last year, the squads' roll call of men who made their letter were: Richard Decker, Charles Reed, William Ochoa, Bob McClain, Bob Brown, Le- Roy Workman, jerry Moore, Denny Coombs, Bob Burns, and Norman Miller, Mgr. E381 FILLING UUH DAYS W THE CINBEHPATH An unusually good year was had by the local thinclads. The cinder path victories, according to Mr. Murray, were due to the large number of returning lettermen and to the all-time high in excellent material. First on the list because of their exceptional speedability comes the Varsity. An excellent showing was made by them in all their meets. Most of last year's lettermen ran in this classification. The Varsity won the league championship. Putting up a good fight, although lacking some material, the Bees came out with a fairly good record. Last but not least, the Cees showed promise as a future Varsity championship team. P.S. They had a good season. VARSITY TRACK Row l Top: McAbery, P. As the season opened this year, our ball club was an unknown quantity. The first two games they lost to teams of greater strength and reserve. After B A S E B A L L beating Montebello, who was supposed to have an outstanding ball club, the team's spirit rose considerably. They lost to Alhambra's nine and also to Mark KeppeI's by a close margin of five to four. All the rookies on the team waxed into good ballplayers, and the season was considered a success. The editors have done their best to leave with you a lasting memento of the year l944. But our task would not be complete without bestowing credit and praise upon those who have so generously contributed to its success. We wish to express our sincere thanks to Mr. T. W. Griffin who has given up much of his valuable time so that he might advise and encourage us. Many thanks go to Mrs. Hadley of McDougall Studios for her time and hard work producing the pictures for this yearbook. lt is with gratitude we thank Mr. Iesse Earl Geary for the use of the cuts of the earlier high schools. Many facts were taken from his book entitled Monrovia City High School. P We wish to thank Mary Reed acting as Assistant Editor for her willing- ness to cooperate and her helpfulness wherever it was needed. Much credit for the production of this book goes to Helen Mackin, Iudy Bailey. Gene Parrish, lune Rheingans, Pat Polk, and Howard Lanterman, who all fulfilled their many duties with accuracy, promptness, and cheer- fulness. Our thanks to Lucille Zaun for the many hours she spent typing this book. As this school year draws to a close, our class of '44 goes through the portals never to return as students. We, the members of the annual staff, have attempted to publish a book which will perpetuate for our graduates the events of this last glorious year at M.A.D., and which to the Freshmen, Sophomores, and luniors will be a record of their accomplishments and good times in '43-44. We have put our best into it, hoping it will give you as much pleasure in reading as it has given us in compiling the Annual. The Editor, D. Geiger I1271 W Vfbffyiiffx gfffffwvfn WM?
