These active girls demonstrate interest, vitality, sportsmanship, and physical fitness. They strive, build, learn and achieve as athletes and young ladies. 23 Yell Trophy Pepsters Boost Team Our Victory Club County Spirit Stirring hopes anew and raising cheers mightily, 125 noisy students cooperating and vibrant, spurred the team on to victory. The Pep Club sponsored the An¬ nual Cheed Leader Feet Beeter Dance at which time the basketball team was honored and the Sopho¬ mores were named the 1967 Yell Champions. 24 Action . . . Speed mm Dance Band Organizes Under the direction of Mr. Joe Huffman, a dance band was formed in the fall of 1966. Mr. Huffman has worked on building a new attitude, resulting in an alive, successful and growing band. The band was very active this year performing at basketball games, M. H. S. concerts, and combined con¬ certs with Hoagland High School ' s band. Joined with Hoagland High School ' s band, the Monroeville High School band participated in their first concert contest. Cheer up, Mary, it ' s Friday. 26 A Smiling Face A Heart Full Of Song Room 26 is one of the few places in school where a student will never get reprimanded for raising the sound level of the room above a low murmur. Of course, the sounds that echo from the Monroeville High School vocal music de¬ partment can hardly be considered noise. They indicate the presence of the high school choir, directed by the exuberant Mr. James Mergenthal. The do re mi ' s are a welcome relaxation after a day of examinations and themes, but there is also hard practices for many school events at which these singers perform. 27 Their group had 25% fewer cavities! Membership in high school choir is open to all students in grades 9-12. The only requirements are that, first and foremost, a student must possess the sincere desire to sing, and he must attend all re¬ hearsals and concerts. One of the highest aims of this choir, in addition to developing musicianship, is to develop and achieve group harmony . Through the choral literature that is sung and through each choir member ' s involvement with this literature, group harmony is sought. Choir Mixes Harmony And Hard Work Girls ' Ensemble 28 B. Heller Soloist TRIO: S. Burnett, K. Minerd, S. Wills. The choir provides a means by which members can study and grow through all types of choral litera¬ ture. The choir presented several concerts during the school year. They started the year with a field trip to the Ft. Wayne State Hospi¬ tal where a performance was given for the patients. The ensuing perfor¬ mance schedule for the choir consisted of a joint Thanksgiving concert with the Hoag- land choir, a Christ¬ mas program and con¬ vocation, a spring joint concert with the Hoag- land choir, a perfor¬ mance at district choir contest, and ended the year with an annual spring concert. i SEXTET: C. From the beginning of October to ear¬ ly February, the walls of Monroeville ' s gym vibrated with the bouncing of bas¬ ketballs and the shrill blast of Coach DeTurk ' s whistle. This was the basket¬ ball season. Lack of experience brought seemingly endless frustrations to the Cubs. The story was much the same night after wintry night. Jump off to a good start, hold a slim lead at half, lose the lead in the second half, then come back strongly only to lose by a few points in the end. With an overall won-loss record of 6-14, the Cub men looked back on a year that was plagued by hard breaks and lack of experience and look to 1968 with a somewhat determined, hopeful gaze. 47 Monroeville Varsity Mike Tim Ron John Denny I 1967 Don « Jim Steve Dave The Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, Excitement, fast and rugged action Any Suggestions? ACADEMICS Jane Reed In Memoriam We pay tribute to the memory of one who had endeared her self to her associates, and by her accomplishments and the example of her life, bestowed a rich heritage upon those who knew her. Goodness and mercy endureth forever, so it is that Jane can never really die. Her life was an open book filled with acts of kindness and generosity. So we are strengthened in our be¬ lief that her life has not been in vain; that the high principals that actuated her shall henceforth have an uplifting influence upon all who knew her, so that the good which she did may endure for eve r. Let us not mourn her going; Let us rejoice to know: That earthly labors finished She was prepared to go. Let us emulate her virtues; That men of us may say; The world is brighter, better, Because she passed this way. If you have . . . loitered in the hall with friends, played cards in the assembly at noon, gathered around the candy store at a ball game, you know the companionship of . . . PEOPLE The Seniors are with us, but not for long. How fast the year has flown! When they were Freshmen they thought this year, this seniority , would nev¬ er come. It has come, not with a rush and a bang, but slowly as they gained more poise, more self- assurance and more respect for themselves and oth¬ ers. It didn ' t come in the happy mood of the Back- to-School Dance, or at the first basketball game of the year. No, it was a subtle change, a gradual accumu¬ lation of honors, of responsibility, of confidence in themselves and others. They started preparing for senior citizenship three years before they enter¬ ed their last year. They worked as individuals, as well as a class. They are still working as individ¬ uals. They will continue to work as they leave Mon¬ roeville and go on to bigger things. Next year they will begin again at the bottom, but not the very bot¬ tom, thanks to their experiences at M. H. S. In Last Year At M.H.S. I can see each of them almost as plainly as in the days when they were seated at their desks in the room. No one thing, but rather a combination of excellent traits, made them so remarkable. Jim Hart is one of this group. Being a good student with g.ood grades is one of the essentials of each member of this group. Jim was a good student but he did have trouble with one subject, I believe he said it was spelling. His answers to many questions were remarkable, showing a keen analytical mind you would scarcely expect from an eighth grade boy. He applied himself well, getting his work done on time. Personality is another attribute possessed by the boys and girls in this group. Jim had that. He was always pleasant and smiling and never complained even though we knew his trouble. He was well behaved and showed that he had had very good home training. He was a real American Boy, full of fun and laughter. He liked to play the games the other boys played and he had a very good sense of humor. He delighted in teasing me or pulling some trick on me that I was not expecting. I enjoyed these as much as he did and would do the same to him which he in turn enjoyed. One could not help loving this boy and respecting him. I tried to make life as pleasant for him in school as I could. I like to think that I succeeded in this as I knew the burden he was carrying. I am grateful for having him in my classes for a year as by his very exceptional manner and behavior I am certain it made me a more understanding and tolerable person. While Jim has departed from our midst we all shall long re¬ member him for the wonderful boy that he was. The 1967 Viking Staff wishes to THANK its Advertisers for their sup ort of MHS 149 In Appreciation Members of the 1967 VIKING Staff wish to express their sincere appreciation to you, Mrs. Overmyer. Your cooperation and perseverance have proven invaluable to the Staff. As a teacher and as advisor to the An¬ nual Staff, you have demonstrated a breadth of knowledge and a great depth of under¬ standing. Your warm and friendly manner, punctuated with witticisms, commands our respect and admiration and serves as a powerful stimulus for us to strive for suc¬ cess. 1 Mrs. Mary Overmeyer Farewell, Monroeville High School At the time we were told that our class was to put out a yearbook there was some specula¬ tion about the idea. But, somewhat voluntarily, the staff was chosen. We started out with high hopes and it will be the greatest, attitude, un¬ til we realized that our first deadline was less than a week away. Well, with a little bit of ac¬ celeration on our part, we managed to get out our first 50 pages on time. By the time the sec¬ ond deadline came around, the few remaining faithful workers were panic stricken. And, our last deadline, well, you can’t imagine. We were ready to throw the whole thing out the window and walk away. But, as you can plainly see, we didn ' t. With this publication we have endeavored to record, as accurately as possible, the events which have characterized Monroeville High School in 1967. To those of you who read this now, and later, we hope that this year ' s VIKING recreates the feelings and events for you as they truly happened. Each Senior now goes his way. We part, perhaps never to converse again. Thus, when you suddenly yearn for the glorious days of high school, let the 1967 VIKING be the supplement to your memory to relive those pleas- ant, precious moments. It has been a privilege to have been co-editors of this book. And, we hope it has recorded and revived innumerable memories for you. If it has, then we have achieved our purpose. Co-editors, Susann Grabner and Pat Grabner 151
