BUGLE - 1927- Kuhl-Dunbar combination, which netted 50 yards. Kuhl and Bentley made touch- downs, while Peterson, Bentley, and Marshall did fine plunging. During the first part of the game Gruber's kicking was below par but he soon found his stride and was run- ning true to form. Penalties were quite frequent, the greatest being 25 yards, given when the Ypsi coach rushed upon the field to plead the cause of his valiant warriors The Monroe team surely felt elated at their victory which was a decisive one but Ypsi de serves much credit for being the only team to score a touchdown on Monroe which was given the Southeastem championship and the cup that goes with it Saturday November 26 was the date of the annual Monroe Adrian struggle The field was covered with about an inch of mud and early in the morning a light snow fell It was just about the most disagreeable weather imaginable for a football game The local line played with gloves on and tried to forget the snow They acted just as if they were playing in ordinary mud without the additional frosting A thousand Monroe people went to Adrian to see the game The game was hard fought from start to finish No substitutions were made for Monroe not because it wasnt necessary sometimes but because Monroe couldnt afford to rlsk sending in a new man who perhaps would be over anxious and make a fatal mistake Excellent gains were made by the Monroe backs and Peterson was called back quite frequently to plunge Wagar gained 38 yards on what was supposed to be a plunge After running 35 yards he became so surprised that he hadnt been tackled that he stumbled and an Adrian man drifted up and fell on him However Wagar was soon given the opportunity to complete the good work and he tore through for a touchdown Captain Dunbar always looking for stray passes saw one coming his way and after snaggmg on to it sprinted along the sideline for a gain of 53 yards probably furnishing the greatest thrill of the game This was Captain Dunbar s most spectacular play of the season although he is unexcelled rn wrecking enemy passes On the next play Peter son smashed through for a touchdown Brancheau gained consistently making one gain of 25 yards and several of I0 or I5 yards On a punt he succeeded in returning the ball 35 yards The final score was Monroe I2 Adrian 0 A banquet was held after the game which was attended by the two teams and many local people This year s grid team was beyond a doubt the most successful in the lnstory of Mon roe High School The Season s Line up Fred Peterson Clement Gruber Harold Herkimer Wilmer Waltz Dalton Gruber Harvey Demzer Ray Brancheau Captain elect Art Kuhl Spencer Wagar Other membres of the team who played eight quarters or more and received letters were Ernest Braun Elgin Marshall Fred Schatte William Park Howard Bentley David Hayden Richard Hamilton Norman Mealey and Stanley Betz Of this entire group only seven will return next year These are Ronald Sayles and William Parks ends Clem C-ruber guard Stanley Betz center and Ernest Braun Elgin Marshall Fred Schatte and Ray Brancheau in the backfield Ronald Sayles ................ l..
