BUGLE - 1927 FOCDTBALL The Season s Record Monroe Monroe Monroe Monroe Monroe Monroe Monroe Monroe MONROE I44 Lambertvrlle Wyandotte Grosse Pomtc Rrver Rouge Blrmmgham Hudson Royal Oak Ypsrlantl ADRIAN Coach Hellenberg s call for volunteers was rssued as soon as schedules could be ar ranged Flfty young warrrors responded Thus group was composed of seven veterans a few men who had had some prevrous expenence on the Reserve squad and several rookres The men worked hard at practrces and by the tame temporary posrtlons were grven there were prospects of Monroe Hrgh having the heaviest team m the hrstory of the school Wrth this vrsron before therr eyes Monroe s hopes were frxed on the S E. A A champlonshrp The season opened wrth Monroe lmed up agamst Lambertvxlle rn a more or less prac trce game The local grndders didnt recerve much competmon however and Lambert vrlle trotted home defeated to the tune of 33 0 Our next opponent was Wyandotte Monroe remembered the 0 0 score last year and was out after blood They got their blood and also a good share of their natural element mud The fmal score stood Monroe 6 Wyandotte O The next team that dared enter our terrrtory was Grosse Pomte When they left they were qurte badly damaged and carried with them defeat to the tune of I7 0 The next game scheduled was away from home River Rouge was consxdered a farrly strong opponent due to playmg on thexr own fxeld However the local rooters turned out rn scores to support therr team Penaltres were frequent throughout the game River Rouge could not penetrate the local s defense nor could they stem our onslaughts Credrt for the last touchdown goes to Harvey Demzer who pulled the old talking play Score Monroe I7 Rxver Rouge O Following thrs game the local grldders settled down to very stuff practrce preparrng for the ensumg game wrth Brrmrngham To this trme Monroe was the only team rn the league that had not been scored on The struggle with Brrmmgham was Just packed full of local color mud However m this case the Muskrats couldn t get started and the game turned unto a punter s duel Gruber drd fme work rn this Ime and booted one 65 yards agannst the wmd Attempts at freld goals failed and the game ended 0 0 Wnth one of the season s hardest battles over and Hudson standmg next rn lme the locals eased up a lrttle and a little attentnon was grven to the subs Hudson didnt stand much show due to the fact that a mce Juncy layer of mud three Inches thrck coverd the playing freld The players drd succeed rn getting the ball mto Monroe s territory on the 45 yard line Schatte grven hrs first chance made two touchdowns after beautiful 33 ' 6 I7 ' - I7 ' I0 ' ' 33 I0 I6 ' ' IZ

B UGLE - 192 7 f long runs Marshall also crossed the goal twlce and Durell once Fmal score Mon roe 33 Hudson 0 Wrth last years nearly disastrous result m mind the locals prepared for the contest with Royal Oak Monroe was determmed to glve their utmost nn thenr effort to stop the mlghty charges of the Royal Oak fullback Morrison Monroe started the scormg when Kuhl s educated toe looped a fleld goal over from the 30 yard stripe The score was tled when Royal Oak klcked from the 24 yard llne This was the flrst time Monroe had been scored on ln the season The last three quarters of the game were characterized by spectacular end runs and smashmg lme plays In the last quarter Ray Brancheau tore loose from Monroe s 30 yard lme and raced for a touchdown This was the best example of broken fxeld runmng either by Monroe or opponents of the season Coach Hellenberg s constant drlllxng on tacklmg certainly was repaid ln the last mmute of play Lapham of Royal Oak passed to Brock who evaded the entire Monroe team and was headed for a touchdown when Kuhl commg from behind left hrs feet m a beautiful roe I0 Royal Oak 3 All that was necessary to have Monroe galn the undisputed S E. A A champlon shlp was to beat Ypsxlantl On the alloted day the local squad journeyed to that fair cxty with the lntentlon of easlly administering that necessary defeat The sun shone wanly no cloud obscured the horizon when out of a clear sky for no apparent reason at all a football hurled from the hands of Drgnan found refuge m the arms of Pray who succeeded m carryrng It over the goal lrne Thxs constituted the frrst touchdown scored on Monroe this year After thus httle demonstration of abrlxty Ypsl drew mto her shell and refused to do anythmg the rest of the game Monroe suddenly came to her senses and tore 1nto poor Ypsr m a fashnon that would make a Turk s blood run cold If Ypsl tried to pass the ball always ended up ln the fond embrace of euther Capgam Dunbar or Stan Bet?
