Vaugn Hummel Jacob Gutterman Francis Smith Alvin Kohler Donald Blankertz DECLAMATION AND ORATION The followmg people entered the Declamatory Contest held m the High School As sembly Room early in March Robert Sawyer Esther Peppler Vaughn Hummel Leo Bauer Miriam Root lone Benore J une Gesell Robert Sawyer the winner was our representative at the sub-district contest held in Monroe at the Dorsch Memorial Library Auditorium April l I927 Of the six con testants from the following schools Ann Arbor Ypsilanti Central Ypsilanti Normal Fowlerville Howell and Monroe he was awarded first place by the Judges The wm ning declamation was Patrick Henry s Speech to the Virginia Convention Miss Beata Wagner coached this year s contestants Edward McCormick was selected by Miss Wagner to represent Monroe n the Ora torical Contest Ypsilanti Central took first place while our entry toolc fourth . . . BUGLE - 1927 DEBATING Thxs year Mlss Beata Wagner the Debatmg Coach had the task of bulldmg up a team almost entxrely from mexperlenced mater1aI srnce Dorothy Kaemlem was the only member of the squad who had ever debated before Eldon Kopke Dorothy Kaemlem and Albert Wagner were chosen for the affrrmatlve team Wrlma Kaemlem took Eldon Kopke s plac on the negative srde The question for debate was Resolved That the government of the Umted States should own the coal mlnes The flrst debate wlth River Rouge was won unanxmously by Monroe on November home debate whxch was wlth Adnan January I4 In the last debate with Fordson February ll Monroe won agaln Though the team s Iack of experience may have kept thelr record from coming up to some of former years they drd good work The home debates were well attended and the team apprecrated the support Arvln Phllllpart Robert Sawyer and Wllma Kaemleln furmshed practice for the afflrmatlve team and besides thas Arvm acted as Manager of the team I8, at home. On December IO, the team lost to Ann Arbor. Monroe Iost their second
