By being friendly, understanding and always willing to help, you have been as a model to us this year. As you have worked hard during the first year of your return to your Alma Mater as superintendent, the first alumnus ever to do so, we have appreciated your efforts. In promoting class activities, encouraging our leadership and advising us for the future, you have shown strength of character and high ideals. For all of these, we are grateful. Pee For the smile of beauty, consult four senior girls' '7fze Gm of 1951 The most consummately beautiful thing in the universe is the rightly fashioned life of a good person. -George Herbert Palmer Our twelve years of school have been for a definite purpose. In those years our teachers have sought out our interests and talents and have endeavored to help us develop them in such a way that our lives would be molded into useful ones. For some of the Seniors there will be college or other advanced educationg for others, there will be military service, for each one, there will be a life to be lived as nobly, as richly, as forcefully for good as each desires. We feel now and can safely predict that the future will prove our present idea that the knowledge and wisdom passed on to us by our teachers have been important inspirations in the fashioning of our lives. The road to graduation is long and entails struggling through such obstacles as history, algebra and physics. For all underclassmen there is the glorious consolation that someday they, too, will be Seniors. Of course, along with all the hard work there is also an abun- dance of fun. Amusing incidents that brighten any class, the crowds in the hall and casual chatter between bells, the exhilarating compe- tition in gym classes, the growing friendships that develop through the years-all add variety and distract from the general routine. A Christmas tree is always a mark of beauty. 14606011 Un -me amz, an me We appreciate, too, the finer things of life, such as music, art, and dramatics. Our students of music, whether they are interested in it as a hobby or as a preparation for life work, have given much of their time and energy for the purpose of producing good musical groups. Art as a means of expressing one's creative interests is fascin- ating to some of our students. In craft work and on paper, through color, design, and originality, they have learned to describe their emotions, and reactions. Among the annual activities anticipated by people of the com- munity are the class plays. The students, too, look forward to the fun at rehearsals, the last minute rush to learn lines, the inevitable lack of at least one important property, the commotion caused by the quick changing of costumes on the night of presentation, and the embarrassing moments when the telephone forgets to ring. However, behind all this is a desire to excel in presenting a really good play and the classes at Monroe have produced many of which they can be proud. M, .gszfs brillianl g by the excel 3 '14-1 . A clear, ever-increasing understanding between the two can result in a pleasant, alert public which cherishes and wants to build its school for its inherent worth, and in a school which respects and appreciates the support of a loyal community. To promote friendly public relations, the Wildcat Tales and the Monrovian have been published, assemblies have been held to encourage student thinking along adult lines, music and dramatic groups have performed for public enjoyment, and many social events have been planned to bring the people of the community into a grateful school, which is reaching out to them with the sincere hand of friendship. It 5 0 Sports play an important part in our lives as they do in those of students of nearly every school. Basketball is the outstanding sport at Monroe, with baseball running a close second and track not far behind. All of our various teams have set their goals high and have worked hard to attain them. Often the going has been difficult and there have been temporary setbacks, but success begins with the will, the spirit of a team to win. In admirable fashion, our Monroe Wildcats have exhibited this quality of wanting to play on and ong and with the skill and teamwork which result from sincere efforts, they have earned honors for themselves and for their school. As students we all have prided ourselves on sportsman- ship and have tried to live by the philosophy that How you win or lose is more important than whether you win or lose. LINE-UP E. Straszheim D. It's all over now. Another year has passed, and the 1951 Monrovian has gone into final production. Everything has slowed down-the clicking of typewriters, the ringing of the telephone, the scurrying around to snap pictures at just the right moment. The newspaper room, usually alive with students rushing in and out, pasting up dummy copies, chattering as they work, racking their brains for the exact word or idea, has a rare quietness now. The very atmosphere seems to be meditating on the 1951 Monrovian, a book with a style all its own, result of the combined efforts, skill, and personality of all those who have helped create it. In reviewing this year's activities, we, as co-editors, recall a host of co-workers who helped to make our annual what it is. Our eternal thanks go to all the senior class members for their time and energy used in producing this book. Especially are we grateful to our efficient photographers, Ada Gilley and Carolyn Bakerg to Nancy Steiner, for designing our cover and lending many artistic touches, to Ione Sell, who wrote our literary con- tinuity so diligently and cleverlyg to jim Statzer, Don Lucas, Elwood Norris and Dick Hurd for their successful advertising campaign. Our appreciation is sincerely due, too, to those behind the scenes: to the faculty for their patience and cooperation during our necessary interruptions, to all our friends who purchased subscriptions and advertisementsg to our parents for their kind and willing help with all of our class projectsg to Mr. Howard Knoll and Mr. Roy Wise for their splendid photographsg and to the Hamilton Printing Company for their services. We wish to express special gratitude to our principal and class advisor, Miss Elizabeth Giedeman, who gave her time and efforts wholeheartedly to help us along. It has been a real privilege and wonderful experience to work with everyone this year and it is with sincere regret that we realize that it's all over now.
