Athletics Basketball The 1938-39 basketball season was very successful for the Wildcats. They scored 654 points for an average of 29.73 points per game, while their opponents scored 463 points for a game average of 21.05 points. They finished the season with a record of 18 victories and 4 defeats. In the Preble County League, Monroe was second, only one game behind the leaders. The forwards, Horine and Rautsaw, topped the league in scoring with 133 and 124 points respectively. Monroe won their first three games in the county tournament but were defeated in the finals. On the All-County team picked by the sports writers, Horine was placed on the first team and Smith was given honorable mention, and on the teams chosen by the tournament officials, Horine was on the first team and Raut- saw and Young on the second team. In the district tournament at Dayton, the Wildcats were de- feated by Reeseville, one of the best Class B teams in the tournament. A Dayton newspaper com- mented on how well the Monroe team played despite the fact that they had only a small gym with a ceiling as low as the baskets in the Dayton Coliseum in which to practice. We hope that in a few years the Monroe teams will not be handicapped by the lack of a large gym in which to practice and play their games. Five members of the squad-Schlotterbeck, Rautsaw, Smith, Miller and Hundley -will graduate this year. BASKETBALL SUMMARY Monroe ...... 19 West Alexandria Monroe ...... 20 Dixon ..........
