Class Prophecy comm ned A hospital now comes to my sight, And I wonder if I'm seeing aright, When Junior Custer emerges therefromg So a doctor at last he decided to become. A moment later two nurses enterg On their work alone their attentions centerg Martha Jane Gates and Ruthmary Beane Each has become a surgical queen. Through the window I see Lois Petry at work As she types nothing seems at all dismal or murk When in walks Carl Shaffer and prepares to dictate And tells her to hurry so they wou1n't be late. My aim I now take to a state in the west, To Hollywood, yes. as you surely have guessed, For across the MGM studio lot Goes Howard Mayers the comedian, right on the dot. For a while in San Francisco now I shall pauseg You'll find that I have a most worthy cause, For at the university I have several friends, Each of whom some subject attends. The first that I see is a tall dark-haired man, Who as mathematics professor some years ago began, Bright people like him he hopes to incite, 'Tis Charles Overholser who has proved genius quite. The next whom I see as I still search around, Is Glenella Campbell who, I have found, Is the Englfsh professor we all had expected, With the sweet disposition time had not affected. Then I behold a teacher of history, Her position thereas does not seem a mystery. For Eleanor Woolf has a great history knowledge, Which one must have to teach in a college. The last I recognize is the music teacherg I know her broad smile and each other feature Fern Fourman has always tried her best, And puts forth an effort whate'er be the test. I glance at the harbor and see there a ship, That just is returning home from a trip, I see Hubert Houdeshell in captain's uniform, Who can handle his ship in sunshine or storm. Now I scan again the country over, For perhaps, in so doing, I may discover Some one else there whom I might recognize, And, indeed, I do, to my great surprise. I see Lois Kemp with pencil and paper, Who, in way of cartoons, has cut a new caper, For though she had told us that Herbert was dead, I'm sure in the comics of him you've all read. Next I notice a sign on a picturesque house, Which does immediately my attention arouse, It says Marjorie's Beauty Shop , then I well know Marjorie Smith in beauty culture has at last made a Ngo . Who's that who seems in such a big hurry, And who down the street does scurryard flurry? I smile to myself when at last I am sure, It's Charles Royer, the dog-catcher, very demure. I'm about to withdraw my telescope at last When in Washington, D. C., at the courthouse so vast Dale Miller to the Supreme Court is recently elected For him such a position no one had detected. I've become very weary and lay my 'scope down And think of the people whom, in searching, I found: I conclude that each one whom I saw there below Had been '39 seniors from good old Monroe. -Marjorie Strickler I 191
