Not in the clamor of the crowded street, Not in the shouts and plaudits of the crowd But in ourselves, are triumph and defeat? - Longfellow Cross Countr Under the guidance of Mr. Cooke, Monroe's harriers had a successful sea- son this year. Team determination and individual effort rallied our team to a second place position in the city cham- pionships. Fine performances were turned in by Tom White and Jim Dol- linger. With many of the boys remain- ing with us next year, the team will have a strong base in the fall. Trotting through the woods. K. Greenberg. J. McCleary, Mr. Cooke, J. Anteo, G. At one point during the season the team won 4 games in a row and ended the season just one game out of first place. The highlight of the season was when our grid- ders dealt Jefferson, this year,s City Champs, their only loss ofthe season, 26-14. Junior quarterback Dick Diminuco and Junior ends Tom Webster and Tony Thomas were elected to the All Scholastic First Team. Selected to the Second All-Scholastic Team were Mark Signor, Jim Lupiani, and Joe Bryant. Other stalwart performers were Paul Lew, Ron Cook, and Danny Lee. The team displayed a very tough defense as goalie Dave Kolko registered 3 shut- outs. Our booters were seldom out-played, as all four losses were by only one goal. The highlights of the year were Don Quigley,s goal in overtime to upset previously unbeaten East, and the game versus Frank- lin, where our booters gave the city champs their hard- est game of the year before succumbing l-0. Our squad had three members on the All-Scholastic Team, as Dave Schwartz was elected to the second team while Dave Kolko and Jimmy Mihilitsas received Honorable Mention awards. Varsity Basketball After losing all tive starters from last year's Sectional team, our 1969-70 basketball team had only a fair sea- son. Coach Perkins tried everything possible, but our team proved to be too inconsistent throughout the year. James Laskett led the Redjackets in scoring with a 19 point average. Tony Thomas provided much-needed rebounding, and was also a consistent scorer. Sam Green and Tom Webster continually hus- tled and showed defensive prowess. Ron Lewis added a touch of scoring and rebounding to round out this yearls starting five. The outlook for next year is excellent as nine letter- men will return from this year's squad. U A H11 ff Varsity Swimming The swim team had great expectations for this sea- son, but due to many bad breaks had a losing record. Many fine swimmers graduated from last yearls squad, and also quite a few excellent seniors decided not to swim this year. I However, there were still some bright spots. Consis- tent winners throughout the season were Ron Cullen in the freestyle, Keary Krauss in the backstroke, Stu Myrkin in the Individual Medley, and Al Hyder in the breaststroke. The outlook for next year is good as only two seniors will graduate. 'sxihuu , .A we, Developmental Swimming M onroek bench looks alert. L Determined swimmers get set. This year, Monroels Varsity Wrestling Team, under the coaching of Mr. Richard Kingdon, had a disap- pointing season. Due to graduation, and a few open weight classes, Monroe didn't have the season that was hoped for. However, there were some bright spots this year. Sam Smith, Irving Murph, Danny Lee, and Edgar Jackson all won consistently. Also next year's team should be much stronger, as there are only a few sen- iors on the squad this year. Tennis - City Champs Monroe's traditionally great tennis team again won the city championship, their eighth straight, and four- teenth in the last fifteen years. This last spring, the team won all of their matches except for ties versus Franklin and East. Pete Ashbrooke was our first singles, losing only one match all season. Rich Levin and Eileen Starr were second and third singles respectively, both with line records. Bruce Marcus and Phil Dawson completed the squad as our doubles team. Finalists Becky Vance Joe Freedman Faculty To the Class of 1970: In these troubled times it is important that each of you, in your own way, dedicate yourself to improving the world in which W we live. At Monroe High School Kline you have had a truly compre- hensive education with a multi- tude of varied experiences. It is my hope that you will cherish your memories of your high school days and that you each feel prepared to go on to meet new challenges. We at Monroe are proud of you and feel confident that you will make a real contribution to society. Please accept my best wishes for your future happiness and suc- cess. Sincerely, Arnold Cantor Principal MR. ARNOLD CANTOR Y Principal MR. THEODORE DESOTO - Vice-Principal To the Class of 1970: As students of The Age of Aquarius, we hope you will cori- tinue to give thought and service to the ideals of democracy in your future years. You can advance human dignity, peace, and fair play by living these ideals yourself. Our wish is that you succeed in this endeavor and enjoy the fruits of personal success and happiness in the years to come. Sincerely, Theodore DeSoto Vice-Principal 66 Mr. Al Butler. Mr. Russel Brigandi. Mr. Eric Rice Deans It is hard for young people to respect rules and regulations. We have been forced to obey too many stale, worn-out laws which no longer apply to our age. Consequently, it is hard for us to respect the deans who represent the regulations of the school. We forget that they up- hold the rules not to restrict our free- dom, but to insure it, by making Monroe a safe and reputable school. Often facing students who are defiant and insolent, they have kept an open mind about the students and are willing to give them help when needed. Their loyalty to us and the school do deserve our respect. Mrs. Charlotte James, Miss Evelyn Waugh Counselors Counselors are many things in a school like Monroe. They give you your S.A.T. applica- tions, they proctor your S.A.T. tests, then they give you your scores. During the confusion of applying to col- leges, they are a stable force of experience and knowledge. Without the counselors, you may end up in Girls, Choir when you canlt sing - and you happen to be a boy! In the impersonal nature of todayls world, counselors take a personal interest in you as they do the thankless jobs that show how much they care. Many of us complain that young people are never listened to. In English classes, including several electives, we learn to express our thoughts so that people will listen and perhaps understand. We read, analyze and discuss ideas presented by ancient and modern men in liter- ary works. As we try to formulate our own values in a confused society, these readings have a great impact and iniluence on our minds. Part ofthe goal of the English department is to provide opportunities for such an exchange of ideas to occur. Special Education The Special Education department is comprised of the School Work and Occupational Education pro- grams. Students enter at the age of 14 for the three year program. During the first two years, concentration is on citizenship, basic academic subjects, and develop- ment of attitudes and habits necessary for success in personal living and on the job. Classes are small, more attention being given to the individual, allowing him to progress at his own speed, rather than having to go at the average speed of the whole class. During the third year, students spend time at var- ious jobs throughout the city, with pay, to gain a feel- ing of what they would like to make their careers. The Special Education department is not a separate school, not even a separate section of Monroe. It is a part, a very important part, of this high school. It is a part which aids in giving all students an equal oppor- tunity to learn and prepare for the adult life ahead of them. SITTING: Mrs. Carolyn Toland, Mr. Edmund Kirby. There can be a great thrill in mak- ing that winning basket, a sense of pride in simple competition, and frustration mingled with effort in a girls vs. boys game in co-ed gym. Monroels gym course provides a great opportunity for much more than physical exertion if we do not fail to grasp it. Health Education classes also have an important role in educating the student. Cabinet is composed of the SGA officers, Commissioners fselected by the Presidentb and Class Presidents. Coun- cil is comprised of the Cabinet, Class Officers and Homeroom Representatives, and is run by the Vice-President. Mr. Frankel and Miss Ringwood are the advisers. The main purpose of Student Govern- r if Bill Fitzgerald - Vice President ADVISORS: Miss Lynne Rinwood, Mr. Warren Frankel ment is to organize and run social events such as Kick-Off Weekend, the successful JAM, and the Win- ter Weekend. SGA,s goal is to involve the Students in more activities and to get them involved in Student Government as insurance against the future. Students who get involved early find it easier to take over the big jobs of SGA later. This year,s officers deserve much recognition for a hard job well done. Editor This year the staff of Monrolog was a totally inexperienced one. They faced the responsibilities of creating a good yearbook without any preparation. More important than doing a layout, writing copy, or crop- ping a picture, they learned how to work with others - and sometimes in spite of others. Often they learned only from their mistakes. But the sense of achievement in meeting new responsibilities will be re- membered long after the hardships have been forgotten. T LW Editor :sg Martha Adams JUNIOR ASSISTANTS - FIRST ROW: D. Kirsten - Holland I have many wonderful memories of last summer which I spent as an exchange student. Under the Youth For Understanding program, I lived with a Dutch family in the small, nort eastern town of Bor- ger in the Netherlands. I sgent the summer bike riding, swimming and sail- ing. uring my family,s vacation, we too a sailing trip on the lakes and canals of Holland and in addi- tion to seeing the flat countryside, the many water- ways, dikes and windmills, I also saw quaint fishing villages and old and modern cities like Amsterdam and Rotterdam. I will never forget the Dutch people, who seemed so friendly, natural and free, And I will always remember the paths to knowledge and greater understanding whic can be opened by experiencing life in another country. Kirsten and her Dutch family Bill - Germany I spent my summer in Goslar, Germany, a medieval town of 50,000 nestled on the edge of the Harz moun- tains, five miles from the East German border. For the most part, life was like in the U.S. My host brother and I went swimming, bicycling hiking and shopping. We also did chores like ba ysit for our fami y's granddaughter, wash the car and carry out the garbage. Wit my family I saw the East German border, va- cationed on the Baltic coast, visited the cities of Ham- bur and Hannover, and saw the VW factory in Woisburg. Not only did I meet Germans, but people from Sweden, England, Israel, France, Ceylon and of course a lot of Americans. It was interesting to learn about their schools, their opinions about the U.S. and Viet- nam, and their outlook on life. It was a summer well spent. The experiences I had are something no tourist to Germany can ever bring back with him, because he is an outsider lookin in, while I was an Hadoptedv German looking aroundg me. Bill and his German brother,' Ulrich Wagner, joyce - Sweden As a Youth for Understanding Exchange Student to Sweden last summer, I lived with a wonderful family in Stockholm, the capital and largest city in Sweden. In order to become acquainted with more people and to see more of Scandinavia, I travelled extensively in Sweden and Norway, and my last few weeks were spent bike riding and swimming at their country home. I left Sweden awed by her people, warmed by many personal friendships, and move by personal exlperi- ences. And I will always remain thankful to Yout for Understanding which gave me the opportunity to chal- lenge and move my mind and heart. Marinella Pesce Jaw Marinella - Italy For a girl 16 years old, to be in America is a very important occasion which gives the opportunity to have a very great experience about the moral and cul- tural fibre. The moral, because I can know better and more closely the manners, the customs, and the men- tality of the American peopleg the cultural, because I can learn many important things by living in such a highly developed country. I personally believe my best experience to have been living for a whole year in a country so big and so different in its Way of life. I am sure that this very great American experience will have important consequences in my future life giving me beautiful satisfactions and letting me never forget where all these experiences came from: this wonderful country called America. - Marinella Pesce Marinellais American sister, Marcia Yules Lucy - Brazil Lucy Machado and her American sister Penny Hyldahl Greenhouse Club The purpose of the Greenhouse club is to give stu- dents practical experience in the care of plants and an appreciation of the role of plants in our daily lives. As compared with former years, the club, advised by Mr. McCrank, has not been very active, because the horti- culture class has taken over much of the res onsibility. Still, a few loyal members can be seen tendlerly water- ing, fertilizing and otherwise caringl for the plants. Chrysanthemums, the biggest crop t is year, are sold in the spring, with the profits used to buy greenhouse supplies. Other plant: grown in the greenhouse are tomatoes, geraniums. poinsetta, avacados, podscarpus, a rare African plant, and the beloved grapefruit tree. BIOLOGY CLUB - KNEELING: S. Lembaris. S. Weiss. 'X' I ,ff A K , X 13 -. K. 3 'N v.. Editor s Note Dear Reader, The editorls note is not an attempt to explain Monrolog 1970. If you react favorably towards the yearbook, then the staff has done a successful job. If you react negatively, and we have failed, the only words I can olfer are, awe did the best we could,'. This yearbook is special to the M-Log staff, who know the thought, work, and head- aches which have gone into every page. We hope it will always mean something special to you as you recall the. '69-,70 year at Monroe. Naturally I am grateful to all who worked on the yearbook - Mr. Thomas, our advisorg my staffg and Mr. Bruculere, our yearbook representative. But I do owe special thanks to special people - to Judy Eckhardt, who didnit complain to me once although copy-editor is nearly the hardest job, to David Owerbach, who man- aged to do his job beautifully Cin spite of his dislike for mejg and to Joel Owerbach, who was the one person on the staff who seemed to really know what he was doing for else he,s a good fakerj. Many times I would have liked to leave future M-Log workers with two words - Forget it! But the experience I've gained makes up for all the sleep I've lost. Right now, as I think about the year- book, I recall Charles Dicken's words from A Tale of Two Cities: It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, . . . it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair . . f' Years from now the winteris despair will have faded, and I will remember only the eternal hope of spring. 207 f . f' .. 11-y ' 'lf f x x T 4. v .11 -. .. e ' A. v . . f, V, it I X , 'J X , I 5 sag 5 I i , A be i N 5 I A . 1 ' ' s , M. x , ' .
