MRS. MARY CLEMENT On October 10, 1959, after eighteen years of devoted service to this com¬ munity and to the pupils and the staff of this school, our School Nurse, Mrs. Mary Clement died very suddenly. It was a tragic loss to all of us, to her family, and to her many friends. At the time of her death, the idea was born that the finest tribute to her memory would be some means of helping young people. Spontaneous offers began coming in to the family of Mrs. Clement. Before long a sizable sum had accumulated, and a committee had been set up to plan how this money could best be used. Since Mary Clement had been so active and successful in nursing, it was decided that the money should be used to help students who are planning to enter the nursing field. So now, each year, some Monroe Senior who is in the upper half of his class and who has been accepted at a recognized school of nursing will be helped financially because so many people loved and respected Mrs. Clement. 4

MISS MARY A. SHEEHAN The quality of true greatness is rare. Most persons live their entire years without knowing a great man or woman. To be great, one needs to have a profound understanding of and respect for others. We at Monroe know someone . . . who with selfless devotion has led and inspired us, . . . who has shared with us our joys, our per¬ sonal successes, . . . who with genuine concern has given us encouragement whenever we have needed it, . . . who has made us proud of our school and of our being called Monroeites ' . She understands us and respects us. We the Senior Class of I960, to acknowledge the many ways we have benefited from the leader¬ ship of Mary A. Sheehan, dedicate our yearbook to her. Miss Sheehan is retiring as principal of Monroe this year. Our wish for her is that she enjoy many years of retirement, years as happy as those she has made for us at Monroe. 5
