Mr. Wallace, Mrs. Ackerman, and judy Ackerman proved that at one of the Com- munity Association Open House programs. Mr.. Hyman Freeman, Monroe Community Association Presi- dent, has led the organization in a banner year. Our sincerest appreciation to you, Mr. Free- man, for the time you have given in this endeavor. Z? dicatian lt is said that youth never sits back to recount all that their parents have done for them. Those who say that are wrong. For we have heeded our parents' worth and as proof of that, we have dedicated this yearbook to them. There are also those who say that there is nothing like a parent. They, too, are wrong. For there are so many things com- parable to a parent. The lighthouse with its strong beacon guiding the boat along a safe passage, steering it away from all the treacheries that might endanger it. The reviewer, who carefully studies a book page by page, checking it for errors. Sculptors molding their images in time-tested hands, keeping them polished and with a vision of perfection. Unfurled Stars and Stripes in- spiring the author of our National Anthem. We must, however, admit that we do not sit back when we think of all that our parents have bestowed upon us. Indeed, we cannot. The guidance and leadership which they exhibit is so active that if we but sat back, we would have learned nothing from them. And so with praise and awed admiration, we, the class of 1954, grate- fully dedicate our Monrolog to our parents. arcufa 11 Under the direction of Miss Eva Wanne- macher, the junior and Senior Choirs pre- sented Way Down South , a musical tribute to Stephen Foster. As we, the senior class, are about to leave for the wide scope of the future, we cannot help but look back at the past, the heritage which prepared us for the future, our five glorious years at Monroe. It is with fond memories that we recall the times we have had here and the friendships we have made. Depicted in this book are the formal and the informal sides of Monroe. From the bright sports events to the gay Senior Prom, to the solemn commencement exercises, all these are parts of our high school career. This MONROLOG is a camera with a time exposure set for the five years at Monroe, from the first uncertain steps as eighth graders to the proud sure steps of seniors. The activities and honors are the film upon which the high school world is portrayed. And so in order to remember the brightness which enlightened this year at Monroe, the class of 1954 proudly presents the MONROLOG as a lasting picturama to be remembered and cher- ished in future years. Dave Greenstone, Pooky White, Izzy Mor genstern, johnny Goldstein hear that they have just won the quarter finals in Charades That Pay. Your encouragement and pep talks before such im- portant events have helped us no end. For your advice and jovial- ity and the many services you willingly have given us, we ex- extend our hand in thanks. Gratefully yours, The Class of 1954 6 Dear Miss Sheehan, Another class is about to leave Monroe. But though we leave, we can never forget youg for your guidance and leadership have been an inspiration to each of us. Your duties never prevented you from spending time with us dis- cussing our problems. The care- ful consideration and time you devoted to us made a lasting im- print on our minds. We are ready to enter a big new world prepared for responsibility by the trust you bestowed upon us. To just say thank you hardly seems enoughg but because we say it from our hearts, we hope you will accept it. Gratefully yours, The Class of 1954 Mr. Ira I. You've all heard that ex- pression before, but it takes someone like Gerta Elsner to prove it. Gerta is a German scholarship stu- dent studying in the United States under the auspices of the American Field Service. Her native home is in Cologne, Germany. We, at Monroe, have been fortunate enough to have Gerta as a member of the student body. Especially proud is the senior class, for Gerta has en- riched it with her knowledge and her friendship. A warm welcome is extended to our neighbor and friend across the ocean. When we look back upon 1954, we will always remember the unity of the wrlld helped by Gerta Elsner. Monroe High played host to the junior Town Meeting of the Air. David Greenstone took the affirmative side of the argument, Is High School a Full Time job? Sally Vln Dyke and Bonnie Lau had the opposing point of view, while jim Northrop took the safe and steady middle road. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS:-First Row, I.. to R.: K. Green, J. Murphy. Second Row: R. Oatman, B. Jenks, B. Lau, T. Davin. Monroe has been very fortunate in having many honors bestowed upon her students. We, of the senior class, are especially fortunate because of the honor which our classmate, Carolyn Merchant, has brought to the school, her class, and herself. Carrie placed eighth in the nation-wide Westinghouse Science Talent Search. She won a four hundred dollar scholarship for her research on the anirmls living in a fresh water pond. Congratulations and lots of luck to one who is sure to become a success in the field of science. 12 Audley ICI!! During the E.S.S.P.A. convention, Pooky White appeared on a T.V. show to tell other New Yorkers about publications at a school called Monroe. You've glanced through the book? You like it? That's wonderful. We the staff of Monrolog, the editors, the circulation department, the business staff, and the typists have tried our best to, produce and deliver to you a yearbook of which you can be proud. lt isn't until the complete yearbook is issued that we can see the fruits of our toil. All year long we are harassed by section deadlines, but now we are able to see the end product of our united efforts. This could never have been accomplished without the tireless help of our advisors, Mr. Carver, Miss Tuttle and Mr. Matheis. Every girl at Monroe belongs to the Girls' Athletic Association. This organization is the backbone of the girls' sports activities in the school. The officers are elected annually by the G.A.A. members by ballots in the Home Room. There is also a G.A.A. council which is composed of two girls from each Home Room, chosen according to their active participation in the after school sports. The function of the Girls' Athletic Association is to organize and encourage Girls' Sports in the High School, and to provide awards, which are based on a cumulative point system. There are many after school sports activi- ties. They include: Volleyball, Basketball, Swimming, Baseball, Tennis, Badminton, and the Game Club. Girls receive five points upon attendance at each club meeting. In this way they may accumulate the required points for the G.A.A. awards. Sportsmanship and team- work are a necessary part of any personality, and Girls' Athletic Association has made these ideals their objectives. A A OFFlCERSZ-L. to R.: M.
