To the Class of 1937: It has been your lot to be in high school during four fast-moving and uncertain years. You have watched the adults of your generation talk peace and at the same time prepare for war with a fatal inability to do anything about it. You have watched a capitalistic society on trial with communism and fascism as its world competitors. One of the most vivid impressions you must have received is that all is not well with the world. Alexander Woolcott quoted a few years ago an ancient motto on a sun-dial, It is later than you think. To you I would say It is earlier than you think. I hope you will not have the arrogant optimism of which Americans have been guilty, but I hope also you will not have the pessim- ism so noticeable in the four years you have been in high school. It is earlier than you think because America has not yet come into her own, and you shallhave the chance to help in building a more humane and equitable economic order. It is earlier than you think because you shall have a chance to build a warless world. All I can hope is that in high school you have realized that a fair, democratic society is a value for which you'll fight, but that we'll never get peace by lightingq rather we shall get it by surrendering some things which we do not want to give up. Fancy a teacher saying farewell to a class and not giving advice! I cannot give you any advice, but I do want to tell you the things in life which I think give most permanent satisfaction. There is permanent satisfaction in a sense of honor, in the consciousness that you can pay back some of the sacrifice and good-will you have received from others. There is permanent satisfaction in line workman- ship, in knowing that you have really done your best. There is permanent satis- faction in acquaintance with the best that the world has known in literature, music, and art. There is permanent satisfaction in sportsmanship, in having it said of you that in any situation you play the game fairly. It is my sincere wish that each of you may lay hold of your share of these permanent satisfactions. M. Lucile Bowen
