Upon arriving, we were assigned to cell block 10 B. Shortly after taking up residence in our new quarters, we were all promoted to the rank of trusty because of good behavior. At elections which ensued, the following eggs were named to organize our group for the purpose of securing better treatment from the wardens: Willie Weasel Van Allen, Leaderg Safe-cracker Sergeant, Assistant to keep Leader from escaping, Light-fingered Lulu Johnston, Caller of the rollg and Rough-house Rippey. Social Chairman in charge of riots. About this time the Prison Welfare League held its general elections, Jar face John Nell being chosen Big Shot, Mac Mauler Russell, Vice Big Shot. Ward heeler Whipple, Secretary in charge of files and saws, and Eel Elliott and Alky Anderson, prayer and song leaders. The Ward heeler was also elected Editor-in-Chief of the MONROE LIFER, the prison paper, while at an election held by section 1929, Rabbit Ramsay and Wet Smack Sprague were named Editors-in-Chief of the annual report to the warden, the NIONROLOG. In December the first issue of the KALIEDOSCf0PE, to be published spasmodically, was presented to the inmates with marked success. A little later the 1Velfare League basketball team put the Charlotte gang on the spot for its tenth consecutive victory. Its next two raids were not so successful, however, as it suffered minor losses at the guns of first the Marshalls, then the East Siders. January, 1929 The Dutch element of the institution organized into a society called The Pop- gunnersf' The Frogs, not to be outdone named themselves The Bad Beer Barons and claimed as their territory cell 125 and the adjoining speakeasy. The week of January 18-25 marked a complete investigation by the authorities which resulted in the requartering of our class in the 10 A cell block and in the release of the 12 A section. In March The Bad Beer Barons presented a play, Gun Powder in the Eyes, in the chapel. Big time Bob Marshall was named Editor-in-Chief of the MoNno1-1 LIFI-zu. The Prison Welfare League elections were marred by battles with pump guns and water pistols, but when the smoke of battle had cleared away, the following competent officials had been named to guide its destinies: Brewer Baker, Big Shot, Rosie Lockwood, Vice Big Shot, and Pineapple Posner, secretary. lNIay brought an exhibition of the workshop products. In June another investigation was held which advanced most of our class to the 11 B division and turned loose the entire class of June, 1929. As the wardens were badly in need of a rest, the majority of the prisoners were given a two months parole. September, 1929 Upon returning to the Alexander Street workshops, our first act was the election of cell block officials. They were as follows: Leader, The Weasel , Assistant, Light-fingered Lulu g Caller of the roll, Howitzer Howie Henningtong Social Chairman, Bandit,' Benedict. The Prison Welfare League held its general elec- tions, Mauler Russell snaking the post of Big Shot with Looter Louis Teall as Vice Big Shot, Absorbine Arnot, Jr., as Secretary. The Prayer and Song positions were grabbed by Jumping Johnny Keeler and Brilliantine Bob Burnham. The section awaiting release 1930 picked Frowzy Fred Miller and Sunny Silverman to make out the report to the superintendent. Thug Thayer was chosen Editor-in-Chief of the MONROE LIFER. , .i g-Q-N. meal? 39 :ZA N -4- V,-.fl V11 i ? L A 2 f 1 ' up , CLASS OF JUNE, 1931-PRISON RECORD January, 1930 Because we so ably followed out the precepts laid down in THE IDLES OF THE KING, it being right along our line, we were moved to the 11 A branch of the institution where we enjoyed the advantages of closer and more enlightening contact with the dear wardens. Bank-buster Branch was entrusted with the responsibility of edit- ing the MONROE LIFER. Our Junior Class play, The Guy with the Thousand Grand was presented in the chapel. The show was free from bombings and was a marked success. Due to the escape of the existing Welfare League officers, the following mugs were elected to take their places: Eel Elliott, Big Shot, Shoveller Shirley Olsan, Vice Big Shot, and Gunman Goldman, Secretary. The KALIEDO- SCOPE had another spasm, its appearance being a surprise to everyone, including the staff. Another investigation followed by another parole resulted in our being advanced to the 12 B cell block. Owing to the reputations built up by eight members of our group and to their success in working the wardens, they were elected to membership in The Natural Dishonor Society. September, 1930 With our paroles revoked under the Compulsary Education Law, the Class-of 1931 returned to the institution for further correction. To get in practice for the coming Welfare League elections, we held another divisional election, naming The Weasel as Leader, Fred Flash', Meyer as Assistant, Safe-cracker Serg- eant as Caller of the Roll, and Merry-maker Whipple as Riot Superintendent. At the VVelfare League elections which followed, T he Weasel was chosen Big Shot with Whitewash Waugh holding down the Vice Big Shot post, Happy Hal Young as Secretary, and Charming Chapman and Ted Tootles Fitch as Choir and Dancing Masters. The machines functioned perfectly, and no very serious fatalities were reported. The group expecting release in January appointed Energy Edna Baschnagel Editor-in-Chief of the MONROLOG, while Honest John Beckley was similarly stung by our class. The staH of the MONROE LIFER picked Lamb Luescher as its director. The Natural Dishonor Society elected Honest John to the position of Foremost Forger with Eraser Eesley as Check Raiser and Hold up Horton as Engraver. January, 1931 The new year started off with another Welfare election, Flash Meyer being named Big Shot, Diamond Delibert, Vice Big Shot, and Cagy Claire Meyer, Secretary. The Natural Dishonor Society revolted against the old regime, naming Howitzer Howie, Terror', Townshend, and Shot Gun Stewart as Foremost Forger, Check Raiser, and Engraver respectively. Plans for a riot to be held on June 12th were laid by a committee managed by Machine Gun MacNaught0n. and at the same time plans for the escape of our entire class were being formulated by a committee of gate-crashers headed by Beautiful Bob Paterson. The Red Racketeers succeeded for the first time in history in thoroughly subduing the East Side gang, thus gaining all the territory in Rochester except that held by Ben Franklino's mob. About the first of June the report to the wardens was published. On the 12th the riot came off, being one of the best ever held, and on the 23rd the longed for jail break was staged without a hitch. No search was made for the fugitives as the wardens decided them to be uincorrigibly lazy but altogether harmless. ill! ll-Q1 if 40 ORGANIZATIONS I X 1 5 il I- t,JlI 5 K 3 0 ,, XX, ,- STUDENT EXECUTIVE COUNCIL Fall Term VVILLIAM VANALLEN ROGER WAUGH .
