Some of the students were assistants to the main staff in serving to both lunch periods. Cleaning the cafeteria and taking inventory kept the staff busy too. The custodians usual work load consisted of such things as mopping, sweeping, emptying trash cans, keeping the furnace and other facilities in good working order. Many new male faces appeared throughout the year. These faces belonged to custodial aids. Vacation periods were a time of frantic cleaning for the custodians, who cleaned and polished every corner of the school. Mrs. Ann Wing Matron This page is dedicated to Mrs. Margaret Rice and Mr. Harold Weed for their many years of loyal service to James Monroe. Mr. Weed will be retiring at the end of the 1973-74 school year and Mrs. Rice will leave us in the fall of 1974. Mrs. Rice worked as attendance secretary at Washington and head secretary at Roosevelt before coming to Monroe. She was a library and attendance secretary for many years before becoming book clerk in the bookroom. She is known by all of us as that “sunny person” in the bookroom. Mrs. Rice has two daughters and five grandchildren. She loves music, reading, flowers, travel and gourmet food. Her first is her church work though to which she is completely dedicated. Mr. Weed began working in 1974 for the Portland Public Schools at Girls Poly High School He worked at several other schools before returning to James Monroe as Head Custodian. He stated, “To me Monroe is the nicest school in Portland to work at.” He is known by us all as the man who will come to the rescue, and we appreciate it. Mr. Weed is married and has three children and nine grandchildren. His first love is traveling, which he has done extensively. He hopes to finish traveling around the world when he retires in the spring. Mrs. Rice takes a moment to spread a little sunshine. w. it y0u Its all in a days work for Mrs. Rice. Jahe Jime Jo qCooL $ach Take time to look back at your past four years. They have been filled with growing, understanding, and learning about yourself. Look hack at friends and remember all the good times the past has brought. Remember the car washes in the rain, the cold football games, and being afraid to take your report cards home. The past four years have gone by very fast, and it is time to cherish the past and begin to work for the future. As the Seniors start out on their own, they will remember their years at Monroe. They will begin their lives and no matter what they are doing, going to college or working, they will always “take time to remember.” Roberta Anderson Sheryl Angell Linda Bagley Cathy Berge 43 Joyce Brewster Patricia Brownell Charlie has LOTS of loving friends, as you can see.
