A play within a play ' that's what the music department gave us with Kiss Me Kate, the inside scenes of a production company and their Baltimore rendition of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew. The story involves the backstage lives of the cast; especially that of Fred Graham (Tom McDowell), the show's director and star. His ex-wife, a Hollywood has-been named Lilly Vanessi, (Kathy Benkert), portrays Katharine, his leading lady. Despite the attempts of a struggling new Broadway starlet Lois Lane (Lisa Hughes), her male companion, Bill Calhoun (Jon Ottoson), becomes deeply in debt with the mafia and is set upon by two hired gunmen (Tim Lehmann and Bob Maddix). A glimmer of old love is re-kindled between Fred and Lilly, and they reconcile at the Shrew's performance, the anniversary of their divorce. The head directors of the show were Miss Feldt, music director, and Ms. Dexheimer, dramatic director. Choreography and dance direction was led by Mrs. Carter, and was assisted by Charles Radke. Miss Feldt also conducted a stage orchestra of volunteer performers from the schools and local area. Performances were held on the last Wednesday and Thursday evenings of September, and there was also a matinee on the following Sunday. All were held at the Junior High Auditorium. Paris Saved! Oil in Paris? Invisible dogs? A bottomless pit? All these and more were found in Girandoux's two act comedy The Madwoman of Chaillot. This madwoman, Countess Aurelia (Lisa Hughes) called upon her Parisien companions to rid the world of greed and pestilence. Since no decision could be made without due process of justice, a mock trial was held in Aurelia's cellar; the oil tycoons versus the people of Paris. The final judgement relegated the corporate presidents, prospectors, new reporters, and female pressure groups to the eternal depths of the sewers of Paris. 14
