Six girls, Becky Schmoldt, Denise Bybee, Cindy Youngwith, Linda Buhai, Andrea Cer-bins, and Patty Scott were chosen by the football team as candidates, and Linda Buhai was elected queen by the student body. The six escorts, chosen by the liason board and the football team were Ron Blum, Phil Tschudy, Mike Metcalf, Willie Gant, Mike Liermann, and Bruce Stiner. The game's tri-cap-tains, Tom Stormont, Steve Bechtolt, and Dan Kundert crowned queen Linda at the pep rally on Friday and also at the game's halftime. The pre-game and halftime shows were provided once again by the Marching Band, conducted by Dick Marti. During the halftime show we were visited by Darth Vader (Mr. Schilt), Chew-bacca (Mr. Krueger), and two jawaws (Angie Hall and MaryAnn Miller), all from STAR WARS. The unusually early spirit week's excitement climaxed on Friday at the required pep rally. Mark Austin was named Mr. Prettylegs '77 by the student vote, and the queen was crowned. Saturday's Key Club dance featured Tuxedo Junction, with Carol Irvin and Chuck Radke capturing first place in the dance contest. Tom Kessenich repeated his second place berth along with his partner, Jackie Tranel. The theme of the dance was the way we were.” 10 ■■ TOP, LEFT TO RIGHT: The Homecoming queen and her court; Patty Scott, Andrea Cerbins, queen Linda Buhai, Cindy Youngwith, Denise Bybee, Becky Schmoldt. A play within a play ' that's what the music department gave us with Kiss Me Kate, the inside scenes of a production company and their Baltimore rendition of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew. The story involves the backstage lives of the cast; especially that of Fred Graham (Tom McDowell), the show's director and star. His ex-wife, a Hollywood has-been named Lilly Vanessi, (Kathy Benkert), portrays Katharine, his leading lady. Despite the attempts of a struggling new Broadway starlet Lois Lane (Lisa Hughes), her male companion, Bill Calhoun (Jon Ottoson), becomes deeply in debt with the mafia and is set upon by two hired gunmen (Tim Lehmann and Bob Maddix). A glimmer of old love is re-kindled between Fred and Lilly, and they reconcile at the Shrew's performance, the anniversary of their divorce. The head directors of the show were Miss Feldt, music director, and Ms. Dexheimer, dramatic director. Choreography and dance direction was led by Mrs. Carter, and was assisted by Charles Radke. Miss Feldt also conducted a stage orchestra of volunteer performers from the schools and local area. Performances were held on the last Wednesday and Thursday evenings of September, and there was also a matinee on the following Sunday. All were held at the Junior High Auditorium. Dancers Charles Radke and Carol Huber dip in their routine to Were Thine that Special Face. 13 Paris Saved! Oil in Paris? Invisible dogs? A bottomless pit? All these and more were found in Girandoux's two act comedy The Madwoman of Chaillot. This madwoman, Countess Aurelia (Lisa Hughes) called upon her Parisien companions to rid the world of greed and pestilence. Since no decision could be made without due process of justice, a mock trial was held in Aurelia's cellar; the oil tycoons versus the people of Paris. The final judgement relegated the corporate presidents, prospectors, new reporters, and female pressure groups to the eternal depths of the sewers of Paris. 14 CLOCKWISE, LEFT TO RIGHT: A young Frenchman, Pierre (Dave Miller) kneels at Aurelia's bedside. The Madwoman of Chaillot (Lisa Hughes) discusses the fate of Paris with the Ragpicker (John Santiago). Ms. Dexheimer strikes a pose at a pensive moment. A corporate president (Tom McDowell) discusses a new venture to drill for oil with his lawyer (Peg Place), the discovering prospector (Bob Maddix), and a European Count (Clark Logemann). The entire cast of “The Madwoman of Chaillot. 15 Couples Sail Away To Tropics There's only one night each year that you can stay out all night and get away with it—Prom. Come Sail Away ' theme of Prom '78 treated the senior class to a cruise aboard an old schooner to an island in the tropics. Murals depicted lush foliage and wildlife from a deserted island complete with a pirate's chest of booty long forgotten. King Paul Gempler and Queen Maureen McGuire led their court and formal couples down the ship's gangplank before parents, friends and photographers. Music was provided by Have Another, a local country band. Sponsored by the parents of the juniors, Post Prom was held at St. Victor's gym, with Freeze providing entertainment until three. Instead of showing a movie the juniors chose to sponsor a breakfast at the Moose Lodge directly afterward. There were more than a few yawns over the orange juice and following the breakfast the couples were on their own for their own favorite way to watch the sun rise. Everyone found themselves living in one of the highpoints of their high school years, each with special memories never to be forgotten. 16 CLOCKWISE UPPER LEFT: The honorary couple, Teresa Jara-millo, Senior Class President, and escort Willie Gant descend from the gang plank. Marla Buholzer and Bryan Buri await TurnAbout festivities to begin. 20 As New Project Kaybec Klub added a new taste in moneymaking projects for the annual trip to Quebec, Canada. Members sponsored the TurnAbout Dance, held January 28 in St. Victor's gym. The band Freeze entertained dance-goers with earth-shaking rock, including Student Exchange guests from Thomasville, Georgia. Turn-About entitled MHS girls to pick up the tab for their male counterparts with boutonnieres, meals, and dance tickets. Other financial projects were the deliveries of Lanz fliers and the sale of Kathryn Beich chocolate bars; its reputation a mouth-watering delicacy at Monroe High School. The Quebec trip prevailed during Easter vacation. A fourteen inch snowstorm ceased to burden spirits of the French students. The group attended a pro hockey game and Parliament, and toured St. Anne's Cathedral, wax museums, and viewed movies in French. Exploring Old Quebec included crossing the St. Lawrence River by ferry, and sampling and shopping at various shops, boutiques, and cafes. Accompanying the group were Mr. and Mrs. Larson and family. Kristi Tuescher was Kaybec Klub chairman, and Tim Babler was treasurer. 21 'Ya'll Come Back Now Monroe Student Exchange prepared well in advance to host their Southern friends—Thomasville, Georgia. Summer months provided fund raising activities such as selling cream puffs, calendars, and bar-beque. Snow and sub-zero temperatures greeted Thomasville students; accompanied by loads of snowball fights, skiing, sledding, and snowmo-biling in the last week of January. While in Monroe, the Georgians discoed at TurnAbout and polka danced at the barn dance. Monroe students had the opportunity to listen to Thomasville participants and learn about Southern lifestyles. T-ville also toured a cheese factory, a local dairy farm, businesses, and enjoyed an MHS Choral Concert, skiing at Tyrol Basin, Mt. Horeb, and many parties and get-togethers with partners, parents, and faculty. Monroe migrated their return visit in April, passing through Plains, Georgia, the Smokie Mountains, and spent an entire day at Disney World. Southern hospitality included plantation and home tours, a beach day, Blue Grass and disco dancing—culminated by the famous Rose Festival and parade. The various productions presented members with an opportunity to apply their skills and experiment at the same time. The crew started off with the task of transforming FHA girls into homecoming clowns. Next in line was the high school musical and then Cheaper by the Dozen presented by the Jr. High. The latter found crew members in contemplation over the number and size of freckles to be applied. The club demonstrated their abilities for the last time on the cast of The Madwoman of Chaillot. The group's main source of money came through a number of bake sales. Crew members also tried their hand at making caramel apples for an after school sale. The group received their hard earned reward in the form of a trip to the Wilson Street East Dinner Theatre in Madison, where they viewed Fiddler on the Roof. At 7:30 AM members were often found in conference at school with this particular goal in mind. One of the highlights of the year was a day of cross country skiing in January. This event was thoroughly enjoyed by all and is expected to be repeated in the following years. The group held several money making events. The main one was the Alumni Basketball Tournament which brought many graduates back to MHS to cheer on their former classmates. Members could also be found selling Cheesemaker T-shirts and windbreakers year round. All proceeds went into scholarship funds. CLOCKWISE, LOWER RIGHT: M-CLUB: FIRST ROW: J. Hurlbert, M. Donning a variety of colorful costumes, French Clubbers ate, played games, and won prizes for the originality of their dress. Theresa Barry and Julie Creamer, disguised as nuns, received the awards for best overall costumes. Other French Club ventures were challenging Spanish and German Clubs in volleyball and viewing a French film, La Symphonie pastorale. Although new activities became popular, traditional ideas were also in demand throughout the year. In October, the annual fund-raising Chili Supper was well attended, providing French Club with necessary finances. Later, as part of the Christmas party, French Clubbers caroled at local homes and hospitals. Finally, in the Spring a progressive dinner was held at several Monroe homes. 26 OPPOSITE PAGE: CLOCKWISE STARTING AT TOP: FRENCH CLUB JUNIORS AND SENIORS: FIRST ROW: C. Swenson, J. Ingold, K. Liaison Board sometimes helped by taking action to correct the problem, but more often the Board acted by providing those involved with information and suggesting possible solutions. After receiving the results of a Liaison Board survey, the Responsibility Pass program was then revised, and steps toward a more organized and enjoyable Homecoming were taken. Also, students who expressed a desire for more dances got what they wanted when the Board appealed to clubs to sponsor those dances. Later a board committee organized a description booklet of all school clubs to be given to freshmen. CLOCKWISE, STARTING AT TOP: LIAISON BOARD: FIRST ROW: T. Rothenbuehler, Q. Jew, D. Grenawalt, M. Parents were also invited to come and try some different but delicious Mexican delicacies. Following the meal, Mr. Stauffacher, social studies teacher, presented slides of Mexico from a trip he had taken. Led by president Carol Endres, vice-president Ann Trickel, secretary Patti Silvis, and treasurer Pat Endres, the club planned to have fun by skiing at Tyrol Basin in Mount Horeb and experienced more Mexican cuisine at Paco's in Madison. Because of an increasing number of German students interested in going to Germany, a new club was formed called Der Deutschlandverein which was devoted to raising funds for the future trip. The remaining socially oriented club called Die Kasemacher stayed an active group that not only thrived on fun, but on learning more of German culture and language. The regular meetings were held to plan various activities. Volleyball games were played, and at Christmas the club carolled at nursing homes. Two dances, including a fifties dance, were sponsored by German Club, giving the whole school an opportunity for enjoyment. A bike hike also was well attended. 30 AFS Attends Milwaukee Folk Fest For the first time AFS sponsored three foreign students; Meiko Fujioka, Ueli Moos, and Gaston Carrea. Mr. Kubly, AFS advisor, stated that we were extremely fortunate to have three foreign students ' AFS learned about these students' homes and schools at informal meetings. Meiko, from Japan, and Ueli, from Switzerland, gave slide presentations. At other times all local foreign students were invited to informal get-togethers, and would stay at different people's homes for a short time. AFS members also attended the Folk Fest in Milwaukee where they could sample foods from different countries and learn how to prepare them. The sale of pizza, a very popular food among students, helped AFS raise funds. Club members could be seen peddling pizza at school and in local Monroe. The annual Christmas issue came out in January, a month late, but sales were much higher than usual. Also, membership increased to larger than ever before. After the first issue, Mr. Holtsopple contacted Catharsis advisor Mr. Prue-her about a different method of printing. Mr. Holtsopple offered the use of typesetting which would make the magazine look more professional. Consequently the next issue had darker clearer type with more variation in margins and types of print. Catharsis, including poetry, prose, and artwork, continued to express students attitudes and ideas. CLOCKWISE, STARTING AT TOP: CATHARSIS STAFF: FIRST ROW: J. Goecks, J. Chapman, P. Place, L. Therefore at monthly meetings projects were designed to cultivate an atmosphere more expressive of the people at school. At the end of the year, these projects were unveiled. One misconception holding attendance back, noted Mr. Pawlowski, was that only people in art class could join Art Club. Actually the club was and will be open to anyone interested in art. Many people, especially those in the school musical, appreciated the scenery Art Club made. The Fine Arts Festival was also made successful by the aid of Art Club. 33 Vica Members Vica members led an active year which became beneficial not only to themselves but to the public as well. The members of the Capstone project gained experience on the job as they built a complete house from the floorboard to the roof. Members sold cutting boards and candle holders during the Christmas season to raise funds. Officers included Nick Teehan, Pete Buol, Jerry Gunser, and Terry Hughes. In three areas, the National Chapter Award, Safety, and BOAC (Building Our American Communities) Monroe received a gold emblem making it a national gold emblem chapter. Of all FFAs in Wisconsin, Monroe was among only two to receive this. Individual members helped make FFA excellent. Four members earned the Wisconsin Farmer Degree which is the most prestigious award anyone can receive. The students, chosen for their various programs, leadership, and scholarship, were Brad Timm, Kelley Hosto, Joe Saunders, and Fritz Wenger. Eric Wolf, after graduation will be traveling to Australia and Denmark on the Work Experience Abroad Program. Community service was also an objective of FFA. FFA members sponsored a tetanus clinic for the public. Conservation Days kept FFA members busy, too, as they conducted conservation school to sixth graders. Certain activities were again planned like past years. A hayride was held at the Webster farm and a Christmas party and dance was well received. At the annual FFA Banquet 393 people attended. These funded trips to the Regional and State Career Development Conferences, and a Leadership Lab. To honor and recognize employers, the group held a banquet for all. DECA also did projects for the community. They helped give a party for the area's handicapped at Christmas and held a spring cleanup program. DECA's forty-nine members were guided by the Distributive Education teacher, Mr. Tautges. Phil Tschudy was president of the club, with Joe Gibbons as Vice. Cindy Voungwith became secretary and Marcia Thompson was treasurer. The historian was Ed Dalton. DECA's goal was to expand and get more D.E. students involved. For the first time, they managed to gather 4-H members together and show horse films at the Ag building. In the future they have high hopes of creating their own film on how to care for a horse. A games day for horses was held at Alice Mickelson's, who along with Miss Dexheimer advised the group. Members also enjoyed a sleigh-riding party at the Walnut Hill Chateau and a Halloween party at Tim Mullican's. Funds were raised through bake sales, horse shows, donations, and the sale of stationery. This money was used to obtain trophies, parade attire, and films. Chris Morgan won a trophy at the fair for Western Championship. Members hope to sponsor their own show next year. CLOCKWISE, STARTING AT TOP: OFFICERS: T. Mullican, vp; K. Staskal, pres.; C. The paper differed from the past, resembling a regular newspaper instead of using mimeographed sheets. Unlike other years, pictures taken by Journalism students appeared, giving a visual aspect to readers. The Timepiece received its name after much deliberation and a final vote. Students decided it would appear as a tabloid once a month. The editors volunteered for their responsible and hectic job of putting the paper together. To better understand printing, some toured the Monroe Evening Times and talked to the editor. Editing the paper required extra time and effort from the following people: Dan Culhane, Louann Lierman, Gail Hefty, Maureen McGuire, Dan Bartlett, Brian Babler, Carol Endres, Werner Rast, Mike Marti, Mark Lampe, Kent Abbey, Tari Kohl, Meighan McKeown, Mona Radke, Janice Gruninger, Steve Purcell, Carolyn Swenson, Barb Norton, Chris Bauman, and Pat Walsh. All participated enthusiastically in state and local activities. The initiation of new members took place at the Kiwanis Youth Cabin. The girls enjoyed an evening of dancing with FFA members at Christmas, and also served at the annual FFA banquet. Tray favors were presented to residents at Pleasant View six times and the group hosted bingo parties at the Monroe Manor. In March, a few girls provided a fashion show for the rest. The Mother-Daughter banquet provided a chance for all members and their mothers to enjoy themselves at the end of the school year. The club raised money through a number of sale efforts. Stanley products, Letterettes stationery, and cookbooks were sold by all members. With a record membership, FHA is still looking to increase this in the future. This will also include males, since the feeling shared by all is that everyone can be a homemaker, regardless of sex. FHA's goal is to help youth assume their responsibility in today's society. The group was led by President Kathy Tschanz. TOP TO BOTTOM: OFFICERS: BOTTOM: S. Leisti-kow, K. Tschanz, D. Meier, J. Augsburg. TOP: T. Wilde, L. Wyttenbach, P. Whitehead, J. Vanhorn, D. Wyttenbach. Those who purchased sweaters wore them on days of athletic events to increase school spirit. Led by a capable group of officers and an enthusiastic advisor, members readily participated in school events. The club assisted with preparations for the Homecoming dance and poster competition. A disco dance was sponsored to help relieve those mid-winter blues. They also sold bus tickets for away games and ushered at home ones. Next year the club hopes to get all members more involved. Anyone needing help finding materials needed only to ask an IMC member. They were also helpful when audio-visual equipment was used since they learned how to use it from advisors, Mrs. Lux and Mrs. Beyer. But not only did members help in the IMC. They helped organizations like AFS with meetings and socials by providing room and refreshments. If any student or teacher wanted to find a particular article concerning MHS, the IMC was the place to go. All articles from the Monroe Evening Times were compiled in a scrapbook for the benefit of the inquisitive or the nostalgic. Another project was making and selling M-Mice at homecoming. Four students, Joel Blum, Kevin Gerber, Ann Paulsen, and Rhonda Hanson, strengthened their knowledge by attending SLAW (Student Library Assistants of Wisconsin) workshops in Richland. One of the IMC's projects was the revision of the IMC Club's constitution. 46 Key Club Nets $1,000 For Donation As usual Key Club had one of the busiest schedules in the school. Improving themselves, serving others, donating money, and having fun were among their many activities. One thousand dollars were given in scholarships and several hundred dollars were donated to the Apostulate to the Handicapped and to Badger Camp. Other service projects included helping with the Bloodmobile, community Christmas stockings, Day for the Handicapped and Kiwanis projects too numerous to list. One might wonder where Key Club obtained funds for such activities. The fourth annual Privilege Auction brought much revenue besides providing students with fun and a chance to throw a pie in their favorite teacher's face. Not only did they repeat answering Santa's mail, but they also typed for the church, worked at the Bloodmobile, and assisted with the Cancer Drive and March of Dimes collections. The school secretaries found themselves the recipients of various gifts or recognition of some sort each day during National Secretary Week. The sale of Cheesemaker pennants and boxes of pens supplied the funds necessary to attend state meetings and leadership labs. These included a Fall Leadership Conference at UW Whitewater and regional and state conferences. The girls also had the opportunity to learn about medical and legal secretary careers through various speakers. Social events included a bowling party, rollerskating, the Employers Banquet in April, and a group picnic in May. Under the direction of Mr. Schilt, the new head of the band department, students not only put on four band concerts but five chamber concerts and two jazz concerts. One of the jazz concerts featured the MATC Jazz Ensemble, which is known for its talent and fine performing. After both performing, the MHS and MATC played together to a receptive crowd. Toward the end of the year, Mr. Schilt was able to arrange a workshop for Concert Band and Wind Ensemble with the Madison University conductor Eugene Corporan. Many musical problems were ironed out in rehearsal, and the ideas gained proved to be valuable in preparing for the final concert. Chamber concerts were not always easy to rehearse, especially at 7 a.m., but the cheerful instructors, greeting students with a smile and plenty of doughnuts, helped them wake up and rehearse. The results were fine performances and more knowledge of music gained. Pep band also rose early to prepare for school games and matches. As a result, school spirit was sparked, and the atmosphere at such activities was exciting. Willingness to help students characterized the band department, as Mr. Schilt and his two student interns, the soft-spoken Mr. Krueger and the witty and cheerful Mr. Gross, always kept the door of communication open. At the culmination of the year, the spring concert, students poured out their appreciation in a spirited performance. Adding to students delight, Mr. Gross announced his acceptance as a teacher at MHS next year. Joette Rockow received the Symphonic Band Most Valuable Player Award while Scott Erickson accepted the award for Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, and the Allan F. New editors came in filled with bright ideas. Old editors returned still in the recovery stage from rushing to meet last year's deadlines. Editor Marcia Peterson was raring to go after a summer class at UW Whitewater. Peggy Kundert, the assistant editor, was really inspired by a workshop at UW Eau Claire. Other editors attended a one day fall session at UW Whitewater. The staff was extremely fortunate in having a crew of energetic, talented photographers. Without them the book may have been possible but not nearly as enjoyable. Business staff worked by selling ads to local merchants. The end of the year found staff members typing, running, cursing, cropping, ranting, raving, etc. A huge celebration marked the passing of the last deadline and Mr. Brockman treated the whole M-Book staff to steak dinners. A truly enjoyable ending to a memorable year. 57 58 59 New Uniforms Spark Spirit A new rule was introduced into the cheerleading constitution. It stated that any girl involved in cheerleading could not participate in a sport during the same season. The Varsity wrestling squad not only accepted the new rule but also, with a smile, accepted new uniforms. They, along with the basketball squads, held many bake sales to raise money. Wet! The only word that describes the football season. Rain ponchos were donated to the desperate football cheerleaders. Wastepaper baskets and scented soaps were sold to raise money to finance both Jayvee and Varsity squads; enabling them to go to camp. The Varsity squad went to Chicago where they won two superior, an excellent, and an honorable mention ratings. The Jayvees raised money for the Multiple Sclerosis fund. Mrs. Carter, advisor, remarked, The girls put much time and work into this project, and did an excellent job. I am very proud of them ' CLOCKWISE, STARTING UPPER LEFT, VARSITY FOOTBALL: KNEELING: E. Russell Schumacher led the prayer of invocation, and Teresa Jaramillo, Senior Class President, gave the welcome. 0 How Amiable and Hallelujah were performed by the Band and Chorus. Jim Bartlett, Vice-President of the class, recalled choice moments and emotions from the past thirteen years, in his humorous speech. He didn't claim that everything was wonderful, and nothing hurt. He did say, however, that some things were fairly wonderful, and lots didn't hurt. Principal Sathoff made the awards presentation. The coveted Citizenship Award went to Brad Timm and Ann Trickel. Dr. Burnell Smith presented the class to Mr. Robert Ableman, who distributed the diplomas. Tassels were turned, the benediction was given, and the graduates left the field as the Band played the recessional Trumpet Tune. There was much cheering as the Seniors received their diplomas.
