WILLBORN ROAUL D. WUETHRICH CAROL L. WYSS JAMES R. ZUHLKE 40 September of 1960 brought 185 green freshmen to the halls of MHS. As frosh fresh from junior high, G.C.T.C., St. Victor's, and the rural schools, we groped our way into the year-and-a-half old building, not knowing our riglit hand from our left and so bewildered we didn't really care. After finally getting class schedules straightened out and trying to decide whether the teachers were much different than those we'd had before, we settled down to business with the election of our class officers--Bob Knipschild, pres.; Terry Goetz, v. pres.; Cheryl Whitehead, sec.; and Steve Grundahl, treas. Our first year sped by rapidly, carrying with it ratted hair-dos, cupping, the Twist, and squirt guns. It ended happily with the class picnic, a sigh of relief, and high hopes for a better and bigger sophomore year. anew, alumni. Still underclassmen, we plunged back to MHS for the second year. Ordering class rings and taking driver's tests were the big events--some got them, some didn't. Officers for our sophomore year were: Dave Pick, pres.; Terry Goetz, v. pres.; Kim Kind-schi, sec.; and Bob Knipschild, treas. Another picnic rounded out the year; half the class ending up in Lake Francis. Finally—upperclassmen! The thrill of it all! Of course, entering MHS for the third time was nothing new, but never being called an underclassman again made it seem like heaven. Officers our junior year were: Dave Pick, pres.; Jerry Marty, v. pres.; Kim Kindschi, sec.; and Bob Knipschild, treas. The big event our junior year was Prom. Such things weren't financed with Swiss cheese, so everyone pitched in and sold magazines. We pitched so hard that we broke all records and went almost a thousand dollars over our goal! About that time the office announced the arrival of our class rings—the mad rush was on. More girls had a heavy finger that fall! Homecoming also brought happy memories. The MHS receiving room was the scene of the junior float committee—busy working(?). TP was all around as we transformed Jim Marty's VW into a giant insect. Winning second place, it was naturally titled We'll Bug 'Em. Wild political campaigning was the rule for the Student Council vice presidential election. Kim Kindschi won and worked his way up to the presidency as a senior. In the spring Janie Hager was chosen as editor of die Bulletin. Laura Schroeder was picked to edit the 1963 'M' Book. They spent two weeks at the University of Wisconsin's Summer Journalism Workshop, learning how to publish papers and annuals. After semesters, Prom committees put their noses to the grind stone and created Under Paris Skies. Becky Houser and her decorations crew moved our gym from Green County, Wisconsin, to Paris, France. Jim Bidlingmaier, elected king by the class, chose Barby Kundert as his queen. May 3, 1963 will long be remembered by starry-eyed girls and empty-pocketed boys. (Those who didn't get their term papers in on time won't forget either!) Representatives chosen to attend Badger State sessions at Madison and Ripon were Becky Houser, Kay Krebs, Kim Kindschi, and Tony Lux. Dance fads--the Bird, Pony, and Bossa Nova, vied with TPing for our attention as we dressed in shifts, cutoffs, and white Levis. In place of a picnic, we held a hayride and bar-beque. This brought the realization that in three months we would be the elite of MHS--SENIORS, at long last. We entered our last year happy, but sad, too, to be so close to the end. Over the summer MHS had changed. A huge new wing, complete with little auditorium, and much needed classroom space, had been added. Our officers were Bill Schuetze, pres.; Jerry Marty, v. pres.; Becky Houser, sec.; and Tony Lux, treas. Homecoming began the year with the football squad electing Vicki Martin as queen. Audrey Beach, Barby Kundert, and Lynn Norton completed the court which reigned over the three-day affair. The bonfire, parade, game, and dance filled many a senior with the thought--this is the last one. During November, Ya'll after Ya'll was heard echoing from end to end of the school. The Greenville, Alabama, Exchange group arrived, and with them some of the best Southern neighbors ever met. Thirty Monroe seniors returned this visit in April, bringing back tall tales of Alabama girls and pecans. We became aware of our responsibilities as citizens on November 22, when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. December not only brought Christmas, but class play tryouts. The play itself followed in February. Miss Patt Van Dyke gave her heart to its direction and had a smash hit over night. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes did so well in the Little Theatre that an additional fifth night was needed. May 1st of our senior year, the juniors honored us at their prom, Polynesian Sunset. Four paintings were given to the school by the Class of '64 and hung early, so that more could enjoy them. As the class of 1964 chose their flower, the yellow rose; their colors, mint green and white; their motto, The past forever gone, the future still our own, we realized that our high school years were drawing to a close. To the strains of Pomp and Circumstance, Commencement on June 4, 1964, brought a tear to the eye and lump to the throat of each senior. But we didn't leave MHS entirely—it still has four years of our hearts, souls, and minds echoing throughout its hallowed halls. 41 Adminstration When the subject is Math. Dave, from San Miguel in Tucuman Province, Argentina, arrived in August, 1963, and after an unbelievably short time could not be distinguished from a native of Green County. After taking senior courses, Dave graduated with the Class of 1964 . In June he left to tour the eastern U. S. before heading back to Tucuman where he finished his Argentine schooling and graduated for the second time. Having once participated in the AFS program, Monroe became eligible to send a student abroad for a summer of study. The entire program was termed worthwhile and plans were made to continue it in future years. On April 1, the Monroe delegation set out for the Deep South. The highlight of their trip was the day spent on the Gulf of Mexico at Panama City, Florida. Tours were made to various ante-bellum homes in Greenville, Boss Glove Company, Dan River Mills, and W. T. Smith Lumber Company, the largest sawmill east of the Mississippi River. Montgomery, Alabama's capital, proved to be of great historical interest because it was the Cradle of the Confederacy . Overnight stops were made in Lexington and Chattanooga on the way and in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, on the return trip. Each student got a first hand taste of Southern Hospitality, they were treated like royalty. Many pleasant memories were left in the South by everyone. Monroe's group toured the Civil War battlefield at Lookout Mt., near Chattanooga. The MHS students visited Gov. Wallace's Mansion. STANDING: T. Goetz (Mrs. Van Austin), K. Reinmann (captain), L. The audiences thoroughly enjoyed the play centered around two young girls and their trip to Europe in the 1920's . Because Dorothy and Lorelei left their traveler's checks in their New York hotel, they had many hilarious experiences on their trip. While travelling, Lorelei fell in love with a wealthy Philadelphian, Henry Spoffard, III. Henry's mother grew to like Lorelei; but Miss Chapman, Mrs. Spoffard's companion, refused to accept the young girl. Dorothy, less serious in her love affairs, managed to hook Sam, a writer, anyway. Prefer Blondes” After accidentally over-tipping the porter—enough that he fell to his knees in thanks--Lorelei and Dorothy couldn't get him to leave. Many society matrons, like Mms. Van Osbourne and Van Austin, felt Henry should marry their daughters. When Lorelei lost Henry's diamond, detectives were assisted in their search for it by the chambermaid. Members of the court were--ROW 1: M. Doyle, D. Gerondale, E. Anderson, D. Stauffacher, B. Stackpole. ROW 2: K. Blum, M. Schuetz, King J. Martin, Queen N. Hardyman, P. Lawrence, S. Arnold, and S. A South Sea atmosphere accented the 1964 Junior Prom, May 1; decorations depicted the theme, Polynesian Sunset.” Colorful murals, picturing the carefree, leisurely life of the islanders encircled the gym. Adding to the mood were palm trees, life-size Tikis, and a live volcano. Promgoers entered the dance through a thatched hut that faced the clamshell throne. The evenings highlight was the crowning of Queen Nancy Hardyman by King Jim Martin. The prom was preceeded by Coketail parties and a dinner at the Country Club. The Post-Prom party was followed by a movie at the Goetz Theatre. The night, for most, ended early May 2. King Jim Martin and his Queen Nancy Hardyman. Balconies, a bull ring, and large silhouettes were the decoration highlights . Music was provided by the Top Hatters of Waukesha. Turnabout is especially popular with the males as the girls pay for all expenses . Terry Kubly, escort to the queen, Margaret Donny, crowned her during intermission. Turnabout, February 8, became a magical night when dancers left MHS for a short time to be transported to a Gala Fiesta. Sunday, May 31, Baccalaureate was held at the Junior High School Auditorium. Rev. Grant Rice presented the address. Tuesday, June 2, the senior banquet was held at the Monroe Country Club. The Class Will and Prophecy were unveiled and a skit on the years highlights was presented. Dancing followed and with it the realization that the class would be together as a whole only once more. Commencement was on Thursday night; the gym--for the first time in anyone's memory--was a comfortable temperature.
