Monroe High School, Monroe High School Ever wise and true, Once again with grateful voices We our vows renew. Very interesting class meeting, right Seniors? 31 Who are you posing for, C. J.? The rise of the Bermuda Shorts. Joan seems to be enjoying the class picnic especially the food. What do you know, now she's a teenage. The Cheesemakers. The Class of In the fall of 1958, we now the mighty seniors entered MHS as mighty green freshmen. Just out of junior high, with skirts hanging far below our knees, we made our way to the huge auditorium where we met our future classmates and received our homeroom assignments. During October we held class elections and Jim Swiggum was elected president; Mouse Wagner, vice-president; Tom Bainbridge, secretary; and Ken Smith, treasurer. In January, our freshman class moved to the new school. By this time we had adjusted quite well to the school schedule and were anxiously awaiting the next three years. We celebrated the finish of our first year of high school with a class picnic at the recreation park. The picnic was a real swinger, complete with rock and roll, saddle shoes, pop, and softball. At the beginning of our sophomore year, Claire Bidlingmaier, president; Sandy Babler, vice-president; Connie Spring, secretary; and Ken Smith, treasurer, were elected class officers. As underclassmen, we felt very privileged to have the exchange group from North Adams, Massachusetts, visit our school, and we looked forward to the time when we would be exchange students ourselves. About that time, pizza became popular in Monroe and the majority of us could be found at Marco's eating it. Also during this year we lost a classmate, Bob Klemm, in a traffic accident. As sophomores, we ordered our class rings. For many of us that was the year we took and passed our driver's test. Again that year, we finished up with a class picnic. The big event in our junior year was Prom. In order to make the prom a big success, we sold magazine subscriptions by the dozens; in fact we even broke all previous records at MHS for selling subscriptions. About that time, our class rings arrived and everyone rushed down to Pandow's to see what his ring was like. Some exchanged rings and others kept their own. The officers for that year were Jerry Robinson, president; Claire Bidlingmaier, vice-president; Jeanne Shager, secretary; and Kay Bauman, treasurer. Soon we started to work on the prom and Connie Spring and Chris Alston were named general chairmen of decorations. The theme was Southern Enchantment. Pete von Allmen was chosen prom king and in turn chose Norma Payer to be his queen. The night of the junior prom will long be remembered by all who attended. The Badger representatives chosen to take part in summer con ventions were Kathy Woods, Connie Spring, Jim Swiggum, and Alan 32 ’62 Remembers Stauffacher. As a conclusion to our junior year, we held a picnic at the recreation park. In three months we would be seniors! Our summer was saddened by the traffic accident death of a classmate, Glen Wittwer. As the school year of 1961-62 began, we came to enroll for the last time. This year opened with a bang--the bang of the prop chair in the class play, the bang of a pistol in Orchesis, and the bang that each one of us was getting out of being a senior. The officers that we elected to lead us through our senior year and also to our future reunions were Franz Camenzind, president; Ruth Schuetz, vice-president; Judy Norgaard, secretary; and Nancy Sickinger, treasurer. Karen Loveland was chosen to reign as Homecoming Queen and Sandy Babler and Sandy Burkhalter composed the court. After the crowning of the queen, we attended the Homecoming Dance for the last time as students of MHS. The next big event in our senior year was the class play directed by Mrs. F. J. Bender. Stardust was worked on many, many hours and, when the night finally came a tremendous performance was given by the cast and everyone connected with the play. It was not an uncommon sight to see girls coming down the halls of MHS in short skirts to their knees or even a little above their knees and heads twice as big as usual, caused by the new hair teasing fad. Thirty seniors were busily working all this year and last summer to make our Student Exchange a big success. The MHS students traveled to Tallulah, Louisiana, and three weeks later we received a return visit by the Louisiana students. These students brought the Twist to Monroe. The 1962 prom, given in honor of the senior class, was entitled In the Still of the Night. As the class of 1962 chose their flower, the American Beauty Rose; their colors, citation blue and white; and their motto, A hard beginning maketh a good ending, we all realized that our high school years were drawing to an end. The gift the class left to old MHS was three beautiful paintings to enhance the halls of our high school. A class banquet was not held because not enough seniors cared to attend. The date of Commencement was set for June 7, 1962. As the senior class heard the strains of Pomp and Circumstance, it brought a lump to many throats and tears to many eyes in remembrance of our wonderful years at Monroe High School. Taking a minute of their busy day the photographer snaps the royalty before the parade. 49 SNO-BALL The Sno-Ball is an annual dance held during Christmas vacation. The dance is sponsored by the Monroe Youth Council and is held in the Lincoln School gym. A traditional part of the dance is the selection of a queen and court. The queen is selected by drawing a name from a box containing the names of all the senior girls attending. The court is selected by the same method using junior and sophomore girls . The senior queen and her court are then crowned and lead the grand march. This year the dance was held December 27. Karen Woolever was selected queen. This group of thirty Monroe seniors shared the unforgettable experience of traveling, learning, and living together, as well as playing host to a similar group of visitors from the deep South. These Exchange members have obtained a unique type of education socially, economically, and, of course, personally. Everyone was impressed when they saw Vicksburg National Park. Sharp contrasts were observed in the economy of the South, the geography, the culture and sociological background. They met new people, made good first impressions, and acted maturally in a new, totally different environment. Undoubtedly these students feel that the exchange program is a wonderful thing. Stardust” was a modern 3 act comedy by Walter Kerr. The story revolved around a successful broadway star, Prudence Mason, who escaped the activity of city life and retired to a small college to associate with normal students. Here, she expected to straighten out her feelings concerning her business-hearted friend Arthur Scott, Jr. and relax while acting in a college play. The students were way-out method actors though; and their professor and director Mr. Bach upset her more. The entire body of students, among them: Stella, the moon sufferer; Mavis, the demented pianist; and the huffy Dean of Women threatened to end the awaited college performance. Prudence's big show heart refused to give up and Jerry Flanagan, and Claire Carter also gave her the initiative to go on with the show. The entire Senior Class considered the play, under the direction of Mrs. Bender, to be a successful, rewarding endeavor. 72 Mike Baltzer and Claire Bidlingmaier practice a dual before the final performance.
