Hiroya Visits from Chiba Japan Hiroya Ichikawa is from Chiba, which is in the suburbs of Tokyo, He is living with the Calvert family on their farm in Monroe. He is an only child and was 17 on December 17. In Japan Hiroya attended a private school where all the subjects are basic and the only electives are art and P,E, He thinks our school system is better because in Japan the teachers change classes instead of the students and the students are more formal with the teachers, He also says Japanese people are more silent and don't get excited like we do at pep assemblies. He is scheduled to return to Japan by August, but he hopes to stay and attend college in America, He wants to study law to be a judge or a lawyer: he also would enjoy working with the handicapped. A big difference between Japan and the U,S, is that here people follow many different religions where in Japan many people are Buddhist. Also, in Japan they have no certain day to practice religion as we do on Sundays. Hiroya says he doesn't really miss anything from J apan, He hasn't lived f' in Japan all his life, He lived in the Philippines for 4 or 5 years and he has visitedfwashington before when he was a sophomore. lssa Stays with DeJongs C Eighteen year old Ana Isabel Gonzalez is staying with the DeJong family here in Monroe. Shewas born on the eighth of July in Chinameca, El Salvador, Central America. Issa says she always wanted to come here and on her arrival she wasn't disappointed. She plans to stay in the U.S, until November 18, 1975, but will be changing schools some time in late winter or early springg She graduated from a college of business last' - October and will be working as an executive secretary in El Salvador when she returns. Some of Issa's hobbies are roller skating, riding bikes and horses, and she loves ani- mals and music of all kinds, She practices yoga and also likes to read. She likes the U,S, and Monroe, she thinks people here are more reserved, but friendly. She feels people of Central America are more romantic, They like to make others feel wel- come and happy. She has had six years of English and likes the language very muchg this makes it easier for her to get along in the U,S, , although she does i Y miss her own native food. Wickizers Host Martha from Guadalajara Martha Ramirez is an exchange student from Guadalajara, Mexico staying with the Wickizer family, She comes from a big family of seven sisters and four brothers, so it's a real change to be living with a small family, Her hobbies are bowling and motorcycle riding, and she also enjoys going to the movies, She comes from a private school where classes . consist of about forty students, and the students are more formal with the teachers, She says school is better here than in Mexico. She likes being less for- mal with the teachers. She thinks people in Monroe seem friendly towards her but less friendly towards each other, She likes Seattle and other big cities and plans to stop in Los Angeles for a week or so on her way home to visit relatives, 1 I Euphony returns for their second encounter at Monroe High during the Pep Club Tolo, Lance Williams, a member of the band, is a graduate of Monroe High School, Walk Into h ' N My C rlstmos World This year's annual Pep Club Christmas Tolo turned out to be a success, says advisor Jim an-1 lllll Moore. Many times the only thing people see are the fun and glory involved in being a cheerleader. What people don't see is the hard work that is done, staying after school, learning cheers or working on money raising projects. Some of the expenses include uniforms, buying things for the team and putling on dinners for our team and cheerleaders from other schools. All these items come to roughly S200 per cheerleader! Gloria Meckle cheerleading captain explained that the main part of cheerleading is thinking up ideas to get the students and teams enthused and involved. Noise Jams, a pie eating contest and numerous skits were presented at pep assemblies this year to try to spark student interest. Greta Neal, cheerleader advisor sits thoughtfully writing the letter to Student Council which she and Vice Principal Bill Prenevost submitted in January. Citing lack of student sup- port at games, they suggested that the cheerleader program be dropped. As a result M.H.S. students rallied to increase participation at games and support the cheerleaders.
