I have sincerely enjoyed my associ- ation with the students and the faculty while serving as A.S.B. President, and I appreciate, too, the cooperation that I have received from you. I would remind you, however, of the fact that the accomplishments of an organization such as the Student Council are sometimes limited. Even in a democracy we must expect guidance and help from those who are more experienced than we. Many times we are called upon, not to make the decisions, but to make recommendations concern- ing decisions which will affect us. A few of the material accomplishments of the Student Council this past year were such things as the purchase of a new public address system for the gym, the purchase of a spotlight for use in the auditorium, and the planning and presen- tation of a Homecoming coronation ceremony in conjunction with the annual staff. I feel, though, that one of the most important accomplishments of the Council was the decision to form the new Key Club. This project is a joint one between the Student Council and the local Kiwanis Club. A boys' service organization, the club will be affili- ated with similar clubs in other schools and will function on a national as well as local basis. With your interest and support, the Key Club will be a great asset to Monroe High School. 51 CAMPAIGN EDITORS MESSAGE Paul DeLong, Annual Editor, and Ron Wagner, Business Manager. In this, the 1965 issue of Hayu Sagha- lie, the staff has endeavored to pre- sent an annual that will be valued through the years by Monroe High students and friends. Having published the 50th anniversary yearbook in 1964, we chose this year to look toward the future. This is a timely theme since it was during this year that the new annex, shown on the end pages, was first used for a full year and it was also during this year that we began to realize the ben- efit of the generous bond issue ap- proved by the citizens of our school district in the spring of 1964. I wish to express my sincere appre- ciation to our advisor, Mrs. Dorothy Nelson, and to thank those staff members who so faithfully labored on this annual. COACH’S REPORT This year's Golf team will have better all-round balance, and the individual performance will be better. The com- petition is against AA schools which is, of course, tough competition. Last year we defeated only Snohomish, but this year I feel we will defeat a few more of these schools. I think the Double A schools will be in for a surprise. Last year was a good season. Lots of the Monroe High boys turned out for golf for the first time and developed into fine golfers. We expect more turn-out for this newly developed spring sport in Monroe High. .. .Mr. West. Annual Staff GIBSON’S MONROE BOWL Congratulations to the Class of 65 . Congratulations and Best Wishes To The Young Adults Of Monroe High School. CROWN PORTRAIT STUDIOS Snohomish Advisor's note To your annual staff, this book represents not only the recorded year of activities and endeavors at Monroe High but also hours of planning and arranging—appointments, counting, cutting, pasting and checking. Recog- nition goes to the entire staff. It is fitting that a few members of the staff receive special recognition. Your editor, Paul DeLong, devoted many hours above and beyond normal duty. Completing many otherwise abandoned pages, he took total re- sponsibility for many others and pulled all sections together. Kathy Carver took full responsibility for the senior section. With exceptional care and consideration, Howard Voland planned and completed the organization pages. The original personalities section was Karen McCarty's brain child. As business manager, Ron Wagner kept carefully detailed records. Special Thank you goes to the faculty and administration for putting up with class disruption for picture taking and to Mr. Rothgeb of Crown Studio for the patience with which he took the necessary pictures. ... D. Nelson AUTOGRAPHS AUTOGRAPHS AUTOGRAPHS 1965 SUPPLEMENT This spring, Mr. Robert Cole, our principal, resigned to go on to further studies in education. He was replaced by Mr. Gene Maxim who has long been a teacher and a coach at M.H. S. We are happy to welcome Mr. Maxim as our new principal. PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE This supplement represents a new adventure for the Hayu Saghalie. You as departing seniors will also be entering new adventures, ones in which you have been preparing for during the last twelve years. How you meet these adventures will largely be determined by how you have prepared yourself. Your record at M.H.S. certainly indicates a bright future. To the students who remain at M.H.S. you also face new adventures and many chal- lenges. Your records are still being written. From past experiences I believe your future to be unlimited, you alone will be the final determiner. Gene F. The area was declared disaster stricken by President John- son. School was closed down for two days so that parts of the main building could be shored up in order that the building could be used for the rest of the school year. The main building was closed as unsafe by the Monroe Board of Education after school was out and then torn down in early August.
