Obviousbf high school is cz preparation - a stepping stone. In this space age, our future world becomes smaller and it is necessagf to be able to com- municate our thoughts and ideas. Therqizre English is most impor- tant to our future as we learn the manner and method J proper expres- sion. We arefirtunate at Monroe to have excellent English teachers. At this time, however, we would like to single out one Q' these teachers andpay to her a well-deserved tribute. She has instilled in her students a desire fir overall accomplishment. Her projects have influenced the class ly creating a unwing and inspiring spirit. Under her perspic- acious guidance and co-operation, her classes have manWsted their capabilities. She has made us aware of the importance cjresponsibilities and meeting deadlines, which develops a more mature philosophy cyflw and prepares usjpr the demandingfuture. Her own enthusiasmjor the subject and words zyfencouragement have been an inspiration to have pride in our work. Whz'le being modest about her own achieve- ments and collective knowledge, she injects a personal andfriendbz understanding ofthe subject. It is this understanding which helps us to think logicalhl. Besides her enlightening influence as a teacher, her committee work also proves she is a person ofhzgh integrigi. Therdire we the senior class q'1963, with great respect and a vote zyfthanks, dedicate the 1963 DOCTRINE to MRS. ARDITH TOMAN. 7 U Mr. Robert Sclzanke, right, has been serving as Monroe's principal the last two years. The smooth operation of Monroe High School is a result of how well his duties and responsibilities are carried out. This makes him the busiest person in school. Mr. Schanke can be seen at all athletic and school activities. His sense of humor makes him well liked by all students. Mr. Fred Peting, left. became assistant prirzcijyal this year after serving as counselor at Monroe. He comes in contact with many students every day. His pleasant dis- position has made him a favorite of the students. 8 Counselors Miss Kloct and Mr. Pearson are both new to Monroe this year. Among the duties as counselors, they help the students choose programs, take tests, and obtain entrance to college. Miss Kloet's cheerfulness, and Mr. Pearson's eagerness to help the students, make them both well-liked and favorites among the stu- dents. Clcrks - Miss Blanch Dvorak standing, is in charge of keeping records, and taking care of the ofhce in general. Mrs. Hellaine Holliday, seated, is in charge of preparing bulletins, making notices, phoning parents. . Y i MRS. TjOMSLAND is a new addition to the office staff. She spends her day typing, mimeographing, and doing general work pertaining to the maintaining of a high school ofice. Half of her day is spent with the counselors, while the other half she helps the office staff. Though she has only been at Monroe a short time, her friendliness will soon have her well-known by the students. 9 LYLE M. ANDERSON, Eng- lish, Journalism, Macalester B.A., Chaperone Committee. The play revolved around a lively young man, Dobie Gillis, who had the odd fate of making everything go completely wrong. In the play his two main problems were a crazy band which he hired for the Horne- coming dance, and a movie actress named Limbo Lamb? Under the direction of Miss Mahood, the parts were cast. Masque and Gavel members made up the majority of the parts. Leads were as follows: Dobie Gillis ...... ...... H arold Levy Bonnie Willet ...... Ellen Hudson Helen Dixon . . . . . . Barbara Hackbarth Petey Bellows .... ..... B utch Branum Limbo Lamb .... ..... M arlane Ayers Stella ................ ...... H aroldine jones Imogene ...................... 'KNo one has to take me to the dance, not even you, Petey, sighs Helen, extreme right, to Dobic, Limbo, and Petey as they look on in wonder, it Why this is the snappiest little dance combo in these parts, states Stella about her band. MONROE GREEN WA VE TIES 3rd Under the new coaching stall of Mr. Harold Roman- sky, head Coach, and Mr. Robert johnson, assistant Coach, the Green Wave wound up the season 4-4. The W7ave's first game of the season, we were defeated by Humbolt l3fO, but were brought back into the winning column - when we Walloped Wlashington 12-7. In this game, one of the most bruising games of the season, both teams showed splendid defensive play, and more than one player were carried off the Held. Dan Nitty and Dick Schuldt tackle Washington 22 who fumbles. Dick Schuldt recovers the fumble for a 12 to 7 Vic- tory. Monroe Green Wave keeps in shape by practicing on the hill behind the School. They hold their scrimages there. With our third game, the Wave remained in the winning column as we beat Mechanic Art, 6-O. The trainers were inside our Five yard line twice, but we pushed them back. Murray, who had won its last two games against powerful title contenders, appeared to be on the way to their third straight win as they scored quickly on Monroe. Monroeis first score came on the first play after Mon- roe took possession of the ball. After Murray failed to move the ball after the kickoff, Monroe took over on the Murray 39-yard line. The team shifted into the newly introduced Whis- pering Huddlen formation. Quarterback Len Salstrom flipped a pass to right end Paul Fearing as he outran his Pilot pursuers to pay dirt. The try for the extra point failed. Monroe's margin did not hold up for long as Murray woke up and marched 80 yards for their lone score. As the first half ended the Pilots led 7-6. With time running out in the last quarter and the drowd cheering, the Green Wave took over on Mur- ray's 42-yard line and moved to the 1-yard line where Ken Nerus plunged through the line for the score. Len Salstrom then proceeded to throw a pass to Fearing in the end zone for the game winning two points. Joe Bishop intercepts and carries the ball for the Green Wave against the Pilots. 64 Anxious but ready, the team patiently follows the game. ky .M 4 j' www My l ' i It hurt! The Cheerleaders this year are being backed by the pep club. They have helped raise the volume of the cheers as well as helping the students learn the words. Cheerleaders have new sweaters and a new system. Both have been noted with ap- proval. A petition was passed around and signed by more than one hundred Monroe girls who pledged that they would join if this club was ever organized. Immediately this club began to take shape. They elected officers and ordered special green and white sweaters. Monroe's pep club has brought honor and glory to the school and proves to be one of the largest organized clubs in the school. 85 WAVETTE ALTER- NATES - ROW I - Nancy Lee, Rose Cuff, Ginny Frederick, Char leen Collova. The choir has been working hard at preparing for new events. The First session of the year began when the choir sang in the Choral Pageant at the Auditorium, and for an assem- bly and the PTA. This year the choir began something new for assemblies. Before each assembly the choir sang the Star S pangled Banner. By doing this they made assemblies more enjoyable. The last performance of the 1962-63 choir this year was at Commencement, as many of the choir members graduated in June. Through the years they will remember the wonderful times, the recognition, and the education they received through the A-Choir under the direction of Mr. Blood. 'TD NX X y Now that the 1963 DOCTRINE and my job as edi- tor are completed I can reflect back and say that it has been a great year. I have had the support and help of manyg without each of these the 1963 DOC- TRINE could never have been. My thanks go first to Mr. Anderson - when the tide turned and the going becarne rough he placed me back on the course. Thanks also to Mr. Bert Hedstrorn, of Josten's5 to Mr. Don Adarns, annual cover representativeg and to -4. , ,,,, Sharyl Hanson, Art Editor - her talent sparks through the pages of the DOCTRINE and her cover design is truly outstanding. Special thanks to my As- sistant Editor Janice Hladky. Her spirit and willing- ness for the toughest jobs were a boost to the entire staff, myself included. My last wish as Editor-in- Chief is for all Monroe students: Smooth sailing on the Green Wave and through life. y 'i-fee. 'Wffayzaffcf Joyce Margulis EDITOR-IN-CHIEF as 2-2 fi D21 ,. ,.
