Blood ' Faculty 4-15 ' Students 'I6-39 ' Activities 40-59 POINTING OUT a difticult passage, Mr. Blood helps Margaret Boicourt and Sue Schwartz with the Christmas program music. When in future years, high school is only a dream-like memory, one teacher will stand out in the minds of all Monroe students. The many happy events of life at Monroe will be inter- mingled with thoughts of this cheerful person. This teacher has more than taught at Monroe for thirteen years. He has become a part of Monroe, and Monroe has become a part of him. His quick smile and quiet voice have greeted thousands of students as they have passed through Monroe's halls. His students are willing to undertake the most ambitious proiects because they know things will come out all right. Under his compe- tent direction, problems melt away and ob- sto-cles disappear. Success, however, is not a matter of chance with this man but the result of careful planning and hard work. KEEPING TIME is a familiar task for Mr. Blood who directs three different vocal groups and the band and choir at Monroe. He spends much of his time helping students plan the outside activities connected with his major interests. Students who have worked un- der this teacher's direction are deeply impressed by his calm confidence and constant idealism. Every year the alumni return to enioy his pres- entations to the school and community. This teacher works on two major proiects each year. His achievements in the past have stimu- lated him and his students to try new things and go on to grander successes. Each graduate will remember the wonderful performances of Mon- roe's music department as an important part of his high school life. In recognition of his service to Monroe and its students, we respectfully dedicate the 1961 Doctrine to Mr. Elsworth F. Blood. , ' School Life 60-69 ' Sports 70-81 ' Ads-Inclex 82-96 Classes Editors Pat Gallagher .Ian Hladky Gary O'Keefe if ,Q :X 2 ,Y .X sxwgyqqib KA s ,fre X xtsirig ak Qi ji! l 9 ' ' s QQ 9 E Y gf 4 6 Q s 4 gf E nn--L., NNUWUQQ XR H id an X A GEOMETRIC GADGET IS DEMONSTRATED by Barbara Kodada, right, to Jan Hladky and Stephen Fowls. Her doctor, Gary O'Keefe, and nurse, Lois Yankovec, thwart her plans. Assisting them is John Shimek, the narrator. Ronald DeMann, left, plays the part of a porter. The scene is from the play, Pullman Car Hiawatha by Thornton Wilder. The setting for the play is a pullman car which is represented by the chairs. The pIay's theme is that it takes all kinds of pevople to make up a world. Mr. Wilder accomplishes this by studying passengers on a pullman car. , X ,Ulf--. HL il! ' Vsjv' 1. One of the most specialized and yet versatile groups at Monroe is the A Choir. Under the direction of Mr. Elsworth Blood, it has established a fine reputation through participation in the city-wide Christmas pageant and the Christmas program for the PTA and Gillette Hospital, The choir also sings in exchange concerts with other schools in addition to performing at Monroe assemblies. The operetta given by the choir this year was Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific. lt was chosen by the choir members over runner-ups Briga- doon and The King and I. Bloody Mary and the other unforgettable characters from the Broadway hit came to life again on April 27 and 28. The choir officers with the help of the choir council assist Mr. Blood in planning the year's activities. Choir begins the first week of school, hits high spots in per- formances at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and during the operetta, and continues right through to the come mencement exercises. This year the choir sponsored a candy sale to raise money to buy new music and new robes and to pay the royalties for the operetta. lil CHOIR - Front Row - Judy Boeltl, DeAnn Boeltl, Caroline Thrift, Kathy Schneider, Judy Johnson, Karen Tierney, Sandy Ortega, Diane White, Darlene Chalberg. Wavettes Successful in Lifting School Spirit Promoting school spirit is the main objective of the Wavettes. Their efforts began this year with the football season when they formed a cheering section. Their mo- ment of glory came when they marched during half-time. Hours of practice had been spent on routines that lasted only minutes on the field. THE WAVETTE OFFICERS are all smiles before starting a year of promoting school spirit. The results richly rewarded the time and effort they spent. From left to right are Jan Thomas, president, Sally Berquist, vice president, Bev Peters, treasurer, and Jean Johanson, secretary. Selling pom-poms and booster buttons and sponsoring the Harvest Moon dance were the money-making projects of the year for the Wavettes. Profits were used to replace pom-poms lost in a tire and to buy material for new vests. Each member bought her own blouse to achieve a new look for the basketball season. ACQUAINTING THE WAVETTE ALTERNATES with the proper style of a new routine are regulars Bev Peters and Jean Johanson. Throughout basketball season, the cheering Wavettes did much to raise the spirits of the players as well as the enthusiasm of the spectators. Their routine, arranged by Jean Smolik, was a combination of marching and dance movements which was completely new and different. A tentative combination of flash cards and an ice routine was planned- for the hockey season. During the Winter Carnival, the unit entered a float and marched in the parade. After the parade they attended the party for high school participants. , Q ,, 1 , 3 wAvlNc EXTRA LARGE Pom-Poms and ' yg marching to the beat of the Greenie pep .qvg - if .,i :III Lzyi S band, the Wavettes performed at a num- ' 'J i TM B A 'i L A if 1 ,, ber of Monroe football games. This swift, shifting halfback, one ofthe fastest men on the team, was the top scorer for Monroe inthe 1960 season. Here the Humboldt Indians attempt to bring him down as he racks up a substantial gain for the Greenies. Every Monroe game was on exciting clash for both the boys playing and the spectators cheering. Although the mark of two wins and five losses stands in the record book, Coach Wirth and Romansky called the i960 Monroe football team the finest group of young adults we have worked with. ROGER FERTIG C191 SHOWS THE TREMENDOUS THREAT he was on defense to all opponents. Here he stretches all his 6'l frame to keep the Indian runner from gaining valuable yardage. UP FOR THE BALI., this Humboldt player intercepts a a pass intended for Bill Paradise 6207. MAKING MONROE GAINS are Roger Fertig 4193, above, and John Seibel l'l4J, below. Wave Cagers Keep Spirit Despite Disappointments The victory-minded cagers opened play against Me- chanic Arts. Although the Greenies were unsuccessful, their effort made the game exciting to watch. For the second year in a row, the Wave had a win- less season. Many of the games were close having only a narrow gap in the scores. The Greenies had their best showing in the games with Murray and Johnson. Hard- ing, having a good year, also had difticulty in defeating the Greenies. Defensive weakness especially in capturing rebounds was Monroe's downfall. Through the season Roger Fertig, John Seibel, and Chuck Diederich led the tight to gain a victory. The team showed that what they lacked in height, they made up for in spirit and good sportsmanship. Hoping to have an experienced team next year, Mr. Wallblom used the junior players often. These boys looked good and will be able to lend next year's team valuable ability and experience. ' Green Wave Six Stuns Central in Region Play Monroe's hockey team placed 6th in the city confer- ence in 1961 with a 2-5-1 record. Coach Johnson changed lines and defense after each game hoping to hit on the right combination. With little depth in terms of experience, Ed Bonnie and Ken Hielm were forced to alternate from the line to defense staying on the ice the entire game. Later in the season, Bill Paradise did the same as a constant defenseman. During the season Monroe lost to Central 5-O and to Humboldt 4-1. In Region IV play-offs, however, Monroe scored a dramatic 3-2 upset over Central. In the second round of the play-offs, the Wave lost to Humboldt 2-1 after three sudden death overtime periods. W1 sis, -swim M W ,fs There are many wonderful people who deserve to be thanked in appreciation for the time and effort which they spent working on The 'l 961 Doctrine. First, and foremost, is Mr. Penk, our patient and understanding advisor, without whose help we would have had no Doctrine. The enthusiasm and willingness of the whole staff made working with them a pleasure. The opening section, hrst to be finished, was shaped up by Jean Johanson and Marilyn Bens. Dianne Curtis, Connie Masloski, and Cynthia Brust, senior section, and Judy Kalash, Judy Boeltl, and Pat Bauer, activities section, shared the dubious pleasure of identifying faces with Carol O'Rourke, Janet Prantner, and Barbara Kodada, underclass editors, who also compiled the index. Combining the class and faculty sections was the job of Pat Gallagher, Gary O'Keefe, Jan Hladky, Sharon Leitch, ancl June Opatrny. Problems kept popping up for Pat Larson, and Marilyn Tryon, socials editors, as they tried to get homecoming, the prom, Sno-Daze, Little Women , and South Pacific into only eight pages. Germaine Fearing and Sandy Schmidt proved the fallacy in the popular belief that only boys know anything about sports. Fran Bejblik and Karen Karsten, our bustling busi- ness managers, kept everyone busy selling the many ads necessary to pay the bills. Thanks are also in order to Sally Berquist for the artistic cover design and to Mr. Kenneth Schoen of S. K. Smith for bringing it to life. We thank Mr. Wal- ter Kemp of Golling Studio and Bob Getterz for the excellent pictures. We are also indebted to Brown Inc. and North Central Publishing for the fine plate- making, printing, and binding. But a yearbook is more than the efforts of the above people alone. It also depends upon the co- operation and assistance of the faculty and student body which we have had in full measure. This year was one of decision, and it is perhaps an important turning point in world affairs.
