V - .f When the pages of the i958 Doctrine calendar have fallen into the past, one person vvill remain in our memories, She is a person whose dynamic persone ality and vitality suggest that the fountain of youth must be located in the garden of her home. She is one of the first teachers whom Monroe girls meet when they enter as fresh- men, and whose friendship they cherish for the rest of their lives, Her love of sports, cheerful dis' position, and all-around enthusi' asm are contagious. Her guid- ance and encouragement have helped many girls become skilled sportswomen and lovers of group activities. All these ate tributes combine to make hei remarkably successful both as the director of girls physical education and as the adviser of the Girls Athletic Association In grateful recogniton of her constant devotion to the welfare and happiness of Monroe girls the 1958 Doctrine Staff dedi cates this yearbook to Mrs Exe lyn Fischer . 1 W i '- f!lf13x - ip s '- J . f-l '-. J 1l xo. 5 h' ,, T : ' , g S Although tunds were lacking lar a letterpress newspaper, this yearfs Monitor statt was not to be denied. Propelled onward by a burning de- sire tor a good newspaper, the start tried out the ottset method. The large number ot extra papers sold each time the Monitor 'fcame out spoke eloquently ot the stu' dent bcdy's reaction to the staftfs eftorts. The attset method used by the staff this year was less expensive than the reproduction method used last year. This meant that the statl had to do some ot the work that was formerly done by the printer. Staff members generally thought this was ci good idea because it helped them learn something about printing. The yery pleasant tact is that the Monitor's new look saved the statt money, Along with its new look in print- ing, the Monitor also had a new personality this year. Each issue contained about ten pictures, all of which portrayed incidents in the lives at the students at Monroe. Four weeks betore an issue was due to be published, assignments were handed out to iournalism stu- dents. Wheiw assignments were tin- ishecl, they were turned in to the copy editor. Atter the stories were typed, they were laid out on make- up pages similar to those that ap- peared in the Monitor. Finally headlines were written and stories pasted clown. After all tour pages were completely assembled, they were taken to the printer who hn- ished the iob. The last and most rewarding step at the publication process was distribution. Dick Fciser has the good luck of wearing the first Doctrine button sold. Rosie Parranto does the pinning as Ginny Erskine looks on approvingly. Opposite Page-It looks as though Jerry Le-Claire and Harvey Schuldt have been overwhelmed once more by instructions from Mr. Berger. X Doctrine Staff Records School Events Work on the Doctrine began early in the tall and continued on through a hectic year. Marie Coulter and Lee Hantt, co-editors, called statt meetings to hash out one problem after another. Karen Holmbeck, business manager, invented ways of obtaining money. Karan Shaneyfelt hustled from store to store selling ads. Jerry LeClaire and Harvey Schuldt compiled the sports statistics. Bob Luck and Gary Toenies wrote the nice things about the seniors. Ginny Erskine identi- Hed the pictures. Because Mr. Berger knew when to praise and when to prod, the Doctrine went to press. On October 3l, Monroe posted a I9-7 victory over Humboldt. Touchdowns were scored by Mike Odegard, Ron Huemoeller, and Dan Cashill. This was the day when excitement filled the air and everyone was charged with enthusiasm. Some of the students had worked the entire evening before into the wee hours of the morning decorating their cars for the parade. As the day dawned, committees could be seen hurrying and scurrying every- where looking after last minute details. But the really excited people were Tony Barbato, Mary Lou Daddario, Jim Denning, Mary Kay Foley, Ron Huemoeller, Rosie Hunter, Mike Odegard, Bill Ruddy, Janice Stapleton, Maureen Vitek, Bob Wasko, and Suzy Weninger. They were the twelve candidates nominated for homecoming king and queen. To set the mood for the game, the cheerleaders charged the students with several rousing cheers at a pep assembly. Fever ran high as the cheerleaders jumped and yelled catchy cheers. During the pep assembly everyone sat tensely as the time approached for Mr. Wallblom to announce the name of the person whose car had been selected as the winning float. After the electrifying announcement, everyone bounded toward the doors and set out for the parade. The parade got off to a roaring start. It followed the familiar route down West Seventh Street to Lexington and on to Central. When the line of cars rounded the corner near Central Stadium, the cries of Mangle Murray, Monroe's Homecoming slogan, could be heard over everything else. Although the game was lost, spirits were undimmed and as early evening approached, Monroeites came to the dance. Enthusiasm rose as the time for the Grand March drew near. All at once a hush fell over the crowd and the procession of the candidates for king and queen began. All of them marched in couples and cheers arose from the crowd for the favorites. The tense moment for the candidates came iust before the student bady's selection was announced. The climax came when the crowns were placed on the heads of Bob Wasko and Rosie Hunter, the i958 homecoming king and queen. Congratulations were in order forthe royalty as they reigned over the remainder of the dance. The hockey team compiled a lo-6 won-lost record against some of the best teams in the state. The team's successes were the results of Mr. Art Johnson's coach- ing savvy and the all-out determination of the players. The Greenies finished third in the conference schedule with an impressive record of 6 wins and 2 losses. This was the best record of any Greenie team since Monroe's entry into the conference in T944 The Hrst conference game against Washington started the season oft with a bang and a 2-O victory Hockey Headlines Winter . . . Making a fast comeback, they quickly disposed of Wilson 6-T and Central 9-O. One of theggf was Wilson. The first half of the Monroe-Wilson game found our bucketeers challenging the Redmen to a see-saw scoring duel. At the end of the tirst quarter the score was tied t2 to IQ. During the second auarter, however, Wilson out-scored Monroe 27 to TQ, and led at half-time by a score of 37 to 211. The Redmen kept the pressure clamped tightly on a cold-shooting Monroe team all during the second half. Wilsorwfs leading scorers were able to pile up 25 points apiece during the night, Although Dan Cashill led Monroe with 28 points, the Green Wcmve was forced to bow 70 to 45. The basketball season ended on February i9 with Vvashington furnishing the opposition, Monroe got off to an impressive 29 to 26 half-time lead, but lost their shooting eye in the second half and fell victims to a last quarter rally by the Prexies. The heartbreaking score at the conclusion of this exciting tangle was 5-4442. Next year Monroe will again be under-sized. Ken Ollig will be the tallest returning letterman, and he is only 6 feet 2 inches tall. Returning starters Dan Cashill, Norman Mielke, Gary Tonn, and Don Schaefer should form a solid foundation for next year's team. Ken Tschida, Dick l-luyck, and Roger Geske will also be hghting for starting positions. Cheering this year's team on through their losses was the newly formed pep club. This exuberant group beat a path to Como Park Junior High School through snow, sleet, and every other kind of nasty weather. They led Monroe's students through cheers and tears, Although their efforts often proved fruitless, they were always on hand in full force for the next game. To the members of pep club goes a vote of thanks for their willing- ness and school spirit. ENJOYING THE GAMES - Upper Right- Dan Cashill chalks up two points for Monroe. For weeks before Christmas the choir and band could be heard practicing for the Christmas assembly and their annual march through the halls, Various clubs and classes eagerly decorated Christmas trees in hopes of winning the coveted best tree award. Although it was a close contest, hrst prize, this year, was awarded to Miss l2obeck's homeroom, The winning tree was decorated by a group of industrious sophomores who must have sat up nights tying bows and bows and more bows. Some were red and some were white, and altogether the collection of red and white bows made a very beautiful Christmas tree. The Christmas assembly brought a solemn note to all the gaiety. This year's play, Why the Chimes Rang, was produced by the speech classes, The theme of the play suggested the true spirit of Christmas -good will. The chimes featured in the story were, according to legend, hung high in a church tower, and were supposed to ring only when the Christ Child was pleased. According to the story of the play, the chimes had not rung for many years. However, when Holger, a young boy portrayed by Irma Hanks, saw everyone oftering their precious possessions, he gave his only penny and this made the chimes ring. The entire assembly was well rehearsed and colorfully staged. The choir, with the help of an organ, set the mood with background music, The thing that made, and always will make, Christmas the best time of the year at Monroe was the giving and receiving of gifts, and, of course, the gift of a two-week vacation. January 24, the P. T. A. attempted ci new type ot money- raising project. Under the capable direction ot the chairman, Mrs. Howard Boxmeyer, and the assistance of Mr. Claudis Wilken and Mr. Edwin Rowell, the P. T. A, planned Monroe's tirst carnival. This was a new and novel way ot bringing parents and students together tor an evening ot lun and fellowship. Many of the Y H school's organizations, in cooperation with the P. T. A., arranged tor booths where games of skill, good lood, souvenirs, and other concessions were enjoyed, The boys' gym was the scene ot most ot the merriment as barkers tried to induce everyone to try their luck or to have something to eat. One of the most successful activities was the cake walk. The proiect was a success, both financially and socially, and provided parents with an opportunity ot meeting teachers in a ditterent setting-advising and promoting activities, Financially the carnival resulted in an income ot over 5500. The P. T, A. will use this money to sponsor various proiects tor the benefit ot Monroe students. CHEESE- John Hanks sneaks into the pic- ture and puts on a big smile 'tor ihe camera. Sluggers Steal Spotlight As spring came baseballs, bats, and gloves were retrieved from their dusty winter resting places. The baseball season was here again, and with it came excitement and enthusiasm. The team began prac- ticing in the boys' gym, but as the snow gradually melted and the playing fields dried out, the boys moved outdoors. Everyone had his hopes set on practicing on the re-surfaced Held at Palace, but that hope was quickly ended because of the excess water on the field. This year's team was bolstered by such returning veterans as Bob Waslco, Dan Cashill, and Bob Whaley. With many newcomers filling in the gaps left by last year's graduates, the Greenies were young and inexperienced. Last year's team finished the season with the en- viable conference record of 5 wins and 3 losses and a tie for fourth place. This year's team hopes to duplicate this record or improve on it. Most of the responsibility for winning is shouldered by senior pitchers Bob Wasko and Roger Bartizal. This year's team misses the services of Bob Griffin's big bat, who batted at a .350 clip last year. They also miss the fielding experience of last year's third sacker, Ray Lorenz. SPRING TRAINING BEGINS-Top- Roger Bartizol, Bob Wasko, and Carl Klein are getting ready to pitch against tough opposition. The most anticipated event ot the school year-tor the choir, that is-was the operetta. The production selected tor this year was Masquerade in Vienna. May I5 and I6 were the all- important dates. A short time before Easter vacation the cast was chosen and practice began. During Easter vacation lovely strains of music, as well as a few clinkers, could be heard drifting trom the auditorium.
