HER MAJESTY A 3' The Greenies had what some of the league coaches called the best defensive team in the city. They were rugged and fairly fast. Starting on oftense, ends Jack Mertes and Bob l-lessler soon proved their ability to play a heads-up game. Hard tackling Gene Wit- tenberg took over for Dick Morrison, after Dick had suFfered a broken ankle. Rugged Ron Johnson was selected as all-city tackle. Guards, John Tetzlaft, John Degido, and Jim Shuster excelled in using defensive strategy. Hard hitting backs, Ron Wittenberg, cap- tain of the team, Bill McDonald, and Jim Hegerle gave us plenty of action-packed games. l-lalfbacks Herm Darwitz and star sophomore Dean Odegard showed they were very capable players. The offen- sive switches in the lineup put Ben Flood at center, Frank Foster at quarterback, with McDonald and Steve Peabody changing oft duties. ln our first game against Mechanic Arts, we tied the co-fav-orites for the city title l3-l3. In that game, Monroe was down i3-O, when the gallant Greenies came back to tie the score. After a scoreless first half, Monroe, sparked by halfback Jim Hegerle, punched through a rugged FOOTBALL Johnson line to eke out a victory 6-O. Winning 6-O against a tough Wilson eleven, Dick Morrison suffered a fractured ankle. A hard running Harding backfield upset Monroe 7-O in an after- noon game at Central Stadium. Monroe had a tield day against Murray. Ron Wittenberg and Bill McDon- ald led the Greenies to a smashing 25-12 victory over the Pilots. In our homecoming game with the Prexies, Bill McDonald, homecoming king, drove through for a touchdown, but Monroe was not to rule the day, and we lost by a tough score of i3-7. Monroe fans cheered when Dean Odegard picked up a fumble and ran for a tally before a surprised Central team, destined to become city champion. Picked to Hnish near the bottom at the beginning of the season, the Green Wave surprised most people by losing only three games, two by one touchdown margins. Much of the credit is due to our able coach, Jim Wirth, who has shown great interest in football and in the team. Our victories over Johnson, Wilson, and Murray plus a tie with Mechanic Arts were tributes to a hard-working team. Buck row: Jim Wirth, Coach, Neil Howes, Mgr. LET I ERMEN The purpose ot the Greenie M-Club is to provide o medium ot improving school loyolties, and school spirit in general. Realizing that the athletes ot the school are looked up to by the rest ot the student body, the M-Club has attempted to set up a program whereby the members will provide the kind ot example Monroe can really be proud ot. This spirit doesn't stop with the sports season but it carries through to the assemblies, school activities and the class room. Mr. Simmers has devoted much time and effort to give the members the type ot program they will wont ond will enioy. The M-Club hopes that in the future it will act as a link between the othletes now in school ond the olumni athletes. 69 q l . I N , . v , . . .
