I do not feel that you are making a beginning, but rather that you have finished a step and are ready for the next one. You have completed twelve important steps in your education and life and can look back at childhood, grade school, and high school. Are you going to pause on this top step, or are you going to start up the next step? If you pause, then we at Monroe have failed, and you have failed. There are so many things you have to face that you can't relax. For the boys, there is the armed service, for the girls, education and employment. Your class is graduating in the midst of war, yet amid signs of the beginning of peace. It is your challenge to answer the demands that each one brings. May God grant each of you the courage to do your best. My congratulations and best wishes to every one of you. JOHN A. Page twenty-Zfvr JUNIORS Stars of tomorrow, the 1945 Juniors started out the year with their goal, the Junior-Senior Prom, the most looked forward to event of the season. They have worked on several interesting projects. On February Q, they gave a Juke dance in the school gym. Much of its success was attributed to small, color- ful hats that were given out. Later on, the class sold large green pencils with pennants attached, and green blotters with the school song on them. To help those who were rusty polish up on their dancing, a pre-prom dance was held. On April 27, they gave the Junior-Senior Prom in the Continental Room of the St. Paul Hotel. This gala occasion marked the last important affair of the season. The photographers have spent many hours telling people to Smile prettily, pleasef, while the literary staff has worked diligently getting copy in. Every spare moment, the art staff has spent in cutting bloclcs and arranging lay-outs, and the business staff has spent its time collecting money and keeping the editors in- formed about the money they could spend. Although it has been hard work for the entire staff, they have en- joyed every moment of it and they only hope they have been successful in producing an annual that the stu- dents will enjoy. Page fiffy BASKE Monroe, under the tutelage of Er- rol MacDonald, and led by co-cap- tains Jack Weimer and Paul Green, had the finest basketball team the school ever boasted, as it was the first time Monroe was represented in the city playoffs. Considered a second division team at the outset of the campaign, Mon- roe opened the season in a whirlwind fashion knocking off the potential city champion, Wilson. That started the Greenie band wagon going as they rolled over Murray, Harding, John- son, Central and Humboldt, but they were knocked off by Mechanics, Mar- shall and Washington to wind up in third place in the conference stand ings. Al Unise and Joe Frucci proved to be the surprises of the season, as both played exceptionally good ballg and both were rewarded for their services with places on the All-City squad. Unise, only a spohomore, was especi- ally adept at getting rebounds and malcing his points on the tip-in va- riety thus malcing good use of his elongated frame. He was easily the main reason for Monroe's springing into the fore front of basketball in St. Paul this year. Frucci was headed for his unerring accuracy. From far out on the floor, the young junior amazed the fans, game after game, with his long-shot shooting, much to the satisfaction of the Monroe rooters. It can be merited only after the candidate has earned five hundred points in addition to the RM . There are nineteen girls re- ceiving their M 's and next year they will receive All- City awards. Basketball and volleyball are the most important sports in G.A.A. Swimming at the Y.W.C.A. is also popular. We seniors have pleasant memories of the G.A.A. to take with us. For a wonderful year of fun in activi- ties, we thank the Board members who have led in directing the sports, as well as the girls who have played.
