During his fifty years of pub- licservice he served as a member of the Virginia Assembly and of the Continental Congress. He served in Congress as a Senator, was a Virginia governor, Minister to France, Great Britain, and Spain. Before becoming President of the United States he served as See- retary of State, and Secretary of War. No man filled the White House with so rich a background of experience as did James Monroe. Few have so completely assured the immortality of themselves as James Monroe did when he gave birth to the Monroe Doctrine. This man was an honest, hard-working. and far sighted pub- lic servant. His accomplishments and attainments during his life resulted in greater popularity with the American people. Monroe College was named after this man in honor of his accomplishments . Enditatinn Enmard 05. Wilbur, 3Jr. This first edition of THE PATRIOT is dedicated to Mr. Howard Wilbur, founder and first president of Monroe College. Through his toil and sacrifice we and future generations will enjoy the privilege of understanding ourselves and the world around us. He had faith when others doubted. His dreams have taken form and our futures are brightened through his unwavering ambition to see a college established that all could be proud of. 3.5151115 of Eng 09h, fne lune lllhe 3331115 of 31119 that garrnund us here tndag, 9nd fne fnill not forget thn, fne be far, far afnag. film the halluhfd 333115 at 31119 eherg unite fnill hid farefnell, CAnti 5himmer off in tfnilight like the nld besper bell. 09m dag a hush fnill fall, lllhe funtstepa at 115 all fnill ethn dnfnn the hall and diaappear, gut a5 fne sadly gtart nut journegs far apart, CA part of en'rg heart fnill linger here in the satred gaalla at 31119, mhere fneite lined and learned to lmnfn, what thrn, the genres fne,ll gee gun in the 5fneet afterglow. 09h , ine glnfn.
