As in nature, when flowers bloom in spring and snow falls in winter, in our lives there are times to learn, times to share, and times to be alone. We cannot prevent life from moving ever onward in its natural pat- tern any more than we can control the seasons. High school is one of those times in life. Each year holds new experiences for a special intent. As sophomores, we feel a time of confusion and fright, as we grow out of the fantasy world of childhood and begin to penetrate the real world of the adult. The purpose of this time is to make new friends and to learn to take on greater responsibility. Initial confusion in the sophomore year gradually evolves into greater self-confidence in the junior year. We become more involved in school activities: clubs, special organiza- tions, sports. Magazine sales teach us how to talk to people and handle money. Through the prom we learn to budget, to plan, and to cooperate with one another. During the senior year, we use the friendships, the re- sponsibilities, and the self-confidence we have gained in prev- ious years to prepare for the future. It is an anxious time of planning and an important time of learning about our- selves and our part in the world, yet it is a fun time of enjoying the advantages of being young. Though we have no ideas as to what life holds in store for us after high school, of this we can be sure: We cannot completely control our experiences because Hfor everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven. This book is a lasting record of the times we experience in high school. CONTE Principal As we pass through the turbulent decade of the sixties and swing into the seventies, life of the high school senior at Monongahela High has undergone a change. The realities of adulthood have already been experienced: turhulencesg a cold regard for authorityg a desire to he heard in politics, music, art, a feeling for the unlcved ones, and a sophistication that demands an audience. Yet the tradition of publishing a book HTHE FLAME, for the purpose of preserving Hold friend- ship, Holdw girlfriends, uoldi' times and a lasting memory of the young days still exists. This book serves that purpose and there will be times in the future when the turning of the pages of HTHE FLAME will turn hack the pages of time. -John P. Conte M onongahela H igh School MR. The faculty is an integral part of this time, for they are a constant influence on their students. Much of the time spent at MHS is devoted to learning, but a teacheris job does not end outside the classroom. He may find himself sponsoring clubs, sports, and other extra- curricular activities which supplement the pupil's formal edu- cation. Students can take advantage of their time in school, or they can squander it. They can be cooperative or apathetic toward the faculty. lt has been noted that the only worthwhile revolution must be created, not by politicians or militarists, but by educators. Today there are more students graduating from secondary schools and seeking higher education than ever before. With a better-educated populace comes the promise of understanding and a better World for the future. ,....4-Q A 15X ' X ' -R - ' Mr. Hobson delivers a summons to an unfortunate band member. of t Mrs. Tonarelli helps Carol Palmer iron out her problems. xlifn H.. The Ringgold Ram basketball team wasted no time in capturing the Section 4-A title their first year together. Composed of the 1969 Donora Champs and the Monon- gahela Runners-up, the Rams started with ll lettermen. Despite their small height, Ringgold was noted for its speed and hustle. An overall record of 16-4, statistically shows their skill as one of the best teams in the valley. The starting line-up for the Rams was Rick Booth, John Radic, Art Coleman, Barry Glaser, and Fred Griffey. All starters ended the season averaging in double fig- ures. Another plus for the Rams was its bench strength with Brian Spearman, ,loe Lackovic, John Vukich, Gary Cappy, and Dennis Wilkerson, who were ready at any call. Hours of hard work and cooperation thus resulted in the first Championship in Ringgold history. Blocking dummies and blocking sleds, fully padded must be on the field before each practice session. They are in charge of issuing uniforms and supplying players with all other necessary equipment. They should be able to tape minor injuries and furnish medical aid. The managers are to provide water and to make sure the necessary kits are on the field at all times. Managers BASKETBALL: George Eckert, Ricky Menozzi. Keeping charge of baseball equipment is more difficult than one thinks. Issuing uniforms and keeping a record of all equipment are the main office duties that take time off the field. Collecting balls, warming up pitchers, and tending to the bats are the main jobs on the field. Being championship managers for the Rams proved to be quite an experience. When a player was injured, a medical kit was always ready. Before each game the managers were always on the floor to retrieve basketballs when the hoopsters took jump-shots. A Time for Us Brian Spearman, Presidentg Ronald Lenhart, Vice-Presidentg Gayle Davis, Secretary, Bruce Zavarello, Treasurer. The class of '70 is the largest class to ever leave the portals of Mononga- hela High School. But the size of our class rarely hindered us during our high school years-'70 graduates merely had more friends among their classmates, more voices cheering 'Battle Cry' at pep assemblies, and more support in the Sports Night competitions. W'e, the class of '70, united in our efforts to make our high school years memorable, and we were es- pecially successful in making our senior year-MA Time for Us . . . We, as stu- dents, merely learned what we could from the failures and successes of the past ten years. But we have ceased to be mere Sponges, soaking up knowledge and doing little else. As John F.
