Coal Barge total of four hundred twenty-four thous- and, seven hundred thirty tons passed through Lock No. 3 in 1951. The role played by the Monongahela in the history of the United States and of Pennsylvania is unsurpassed. The name itself shows its connection with the early history of Pennsylvania, for the word Mo- nongahela is an old Indian word mean- ing The River of the Falling Banks . At first trading posts sprang up along its banks to accomodate the great influx of settlers moving westward from Pittsburgh, which was at that time the gateway to the West. This extensive emigration had start- ed before the Revolution, was interrupted by it, but resumed afterwards in greatly increased numbers. As the Monongahela was the main waterway, many prosper- ous boatyards were established on its banks. During the forties and fifties it is Water Sports ..44-1. A A .. t.- probable that there was not a navigable stream on the western waterway system which did not fill the cutwater of a Monon- gahela craft. With the coming oi the steamboat, travel increased and flourish- ing industries sprang up. The hushed noise of running water was broken by the blowing of the foghorns by the riverboat captains, announcing the advent of a new era. Today the river has become a part of the life of the people who live along its banks. Its importance still is increasing as it furnishes a waterway on which coal and raw materials can be transported to meet the demands of the iron and steel industries. But the familiar sight of this river will remain forever in the hearts of all the valley people, especially in those of Monongahela, the town which bears this great river's name.
