It is not comparable to its other American relatives: the peaceful Potomac, the turbulent Colorado. or the beautiful Hudson River. Unlike these the Mononga- hela is a sluggish, muddy river, greenish- grey in color, tainted with impurities from the grime of industry. The total length ot the Monongahela is about one hundred twenty-eight miles from its source near Fairmont, West Virginia, to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where it joins the Alle- gheny to form the Ohio. Although the Mo- nongahela is not the longest nor the most beautiful river, it has distinguished itself by being one of the busiest rivers. More tonnage passes through the Monongahela than through the world-famous Panama, Suez, or Kiel Canals. In fact its tonnage is second in the world, and has a recorded Coal Barge total of four hundred twenty-four thous- and, seven hundred thirty tons passed through Lock No. 3 in 1951. The role played by the Monongahela in the history of the United States and of Pennsylvania is unsurpassed. The name itself shows its connection with the early history of Pennsylvania, for the word Mo- nongahela is an old Indian word mean- ing The River of the Falling Banks . At first trading posts sprang up along its banks to accomodate the great influx of settlers moving westward from Pittsburgh, which was at that time the gateway to the West. This extensive emigration had start- ed before the Revolution, was interrupted by it, but resumed afterwards in greatly increased numbers. As the Monongahela was the main waterway, many prosper- ous boatyards were established on its banks. During the forties and fifties it is Water Sports ..44-1. A A .. t.- probable that there was not a navigable stream on the western waterway system which did not fill the cutwater of a Monon- gahela craft. With the coming oi the steamboat, travel increased and flourish- ing industries sprang up. The hushed noise of running water was broken by the blowing of the foghorns by the riverboat captains, announcing the advent of a new era. Today the river has become a part of the life of the people who live along its banks. Its importance still is increasing as it furnishes a waterway on which coal and raw materials can be transported to meet the demands of the iron and steel industries. But the familiar sight of this river will remain forever in the hearts of all the valley people, especially in those of Monongahela, the town which bears this great river's name. At the river's edge it rises from a site chosen more than twenty-five years ago be- cause of its nearness to water and to abundant coal reserves the raw materials of electricity. There are numerous indus- tries of this type along the banks of the Monongahela River. each contributing to the various needs of mill. mine, commerce. and home. One by one the industries rise. making the Monon- gahela River Valley a better and more interesting place to live-concrete evidence of faith in the future of a growing Western Pennsylvania. The numerous activities at Monongahela High School offer many hours of pleasure to the student participant. Be- cause of the wide variety of activities the students may join the group which interests them most. whether a club. music group, service group. sports or dramatic organization. The activities' program offers to the the student a practical means for extending his classroom learning and enables him to work with his fellow classmates and develop a sense of responsibil- ity. It is composed of representatives elected by the student body. The objectives of the Student Council are: to pro- vide an opportunity to study problems and recommend solutions that would improve the school life of all the students: to develop the qualities of leadership, humile ity, and responsibility: to develop in the student a growing appreciation of the democratic way of life by participating in democratic action in school: and to promote the spirit of cooperation between students. administration, and faculty, and good fellowship throughout the school. The Student Council working under the guidance of its sponsor, Mr. La Frankie, has benefited the school in many ways. This year in addition to the annual Variety Show and Hay Seed Hoe Down, the Student Council introduced two new projects: a movie program during the lunch period, and a plan to furnish milk for the students who carry their lunches. Suggestion boxes have been placed in the home rooms by the Student Council. The students at M.H.S. owe much to the stu- dent council for providing the school many conveniences and priviliges. Club meetings are spent in discussion of topics related to their aims. One of their services to the high school is the trimming of the Christmas tree in the school hall. An annual activity is a trip to go swimming at the Y.lVl.C.A. in Washington, Pennsylvania. The projector committee shows educational movies to the school in various classrooms. Their duties in- clude keeping pupils from loitering in the hallways during the A, B, and C lunch periods, maintaining order during the change of classes and during lunch periods, prohibiting students lrom using specific doors during lunch periods, and checking on students' lunch passes. Varsity The Monongahela High School Varsity Marching Band be- gan practice early in August under the direction of the new band director, Mr. Paul McCandless. At the opening cf the football season students were ready to appear before the public in their new uniforms with new music, marches, and drills. The half-time performances at the football games were a credit to the school, the musicians and the director. as well as to the majorettes who had prepared some outstanding footwork and twirlinq. Precision marching, drills, and tricky entrance routines were combined with special arrangements of show tunes for some of the performances, especially those featuring the Elvis Presley show and My Fair Lady. The qroup participated in various local and district parades, I ' includinq the Halloween Parade, the Veterans' Day Parade, and 1 the Memorial Day Parade. Havinq entered competition in the Veterans' Day Parade at Monessen, the band received the award Best Hiqh School Band. A number ot the band members were selected to participate in the Washington County Band, three were honored by appoint- ments to District Band, and one to P.M.E,A., all-state band. Two dance bands have recently been orqanized by members ot the Varsity Band. Their purpose is to be on call lor public appearances. The annual sprinq band concert featured various types of music which were enjoyed by young and old alike. Senior members ot the band were honored at this concert. The setting of the play was the living room of a Connecticut farmhouse. The antiquat- ed house was purchased by the Gage family from the water company with the stipulation that the former owners might live in the house for the remainder of their lives. The action began when the former own- ers, Abegail and Mathilda Rockwood and Mathilda's son Matt, return to live in the house. The lives of the two different families in the same house create a delightful form of contrast throughout the play, which com- bined with excellent characterizations, re- warded everyone who attended. Class Play ONCE THERE WAS A PRINCESS Once There Was A Princess , the annual class play, was presented on November 15, in the Monongahela High School auditorium, The play. a comedy in two acts and set in the Mid-Victorian period with authentic costumes, set. and props, was directed by Miss Madaline Boyland. The play told the story of a small town girl's return after the death ot her husband, an Italian prince who had squandered her turtune. Atter arriving in her hometown and being mistaken for a sewing woman, the princess learned that the entire household had been expecting a reqally- mannered woman. Heartbroken because she had not been recognized, she left town and returned, dressed as the princess the townspeople had ex- pected. Staff members are appointed in the spring oi the junior year. Meetings begin immed- iately and extend into the summer vacation until the theme is selected and the general plan of the book completed. With members of the newspaper staff the new members ol the yearbook stall make up the journalism class, which is conducted as a workshop for the planning and publication ot the Flame and the Red and White Review. The Red and White Review, Monongahela High School newspaper, is published monthly by members of the journalism class. The staff endeavors to record and sup- port all worthy student activities and to maintain high standards of journalistic work. Through their work on the paper the student journalists have developed a more concise form ol writing and greater personal responsibility as well as becoming familiar with problems of newspaper production and circulation. Before the coming of the white man, Indian youth swam. fished. and raced their canoes in the Monongahela River. The pioneer white man had little time to enjoy water sports, but used the river for the serious purpose of transportation. In recent years there has been a strong trend toward water rec- reation. Most of the river towns have at least one boat club and many types of pleasure craft are on the river. Canoeing, swimming, and Waterskiing are becoming increasingly pop- ular. Like the river. high school provides opportunities for participating in recreational activities. Football, basketball, soccer, and baseball offer year-round activities for boys, while volleyball. basketball. and mushball offer recreation for the girls. These activities are parts of the school program which. while secondary to the prime purpose of educating youth, pro- vide enjoyment as well as opportunities to demonstrate sports. manship. Hillman - Tackle The Monongahela High School football team, coached by Mr. Cree. compiled a record of 2 victories and 7 defeats during the 1956 season. The first victory was registered over a strong Snowden Township team in the opening game of the season. Following four consecutive defeats, the Wildcats then came back to beat Brownsville 19-8 in a Big-Six Conference game which electrified local fans, Although they dropped their remaining three games, the Red and White gridders fought all the way. The 1956 team had to be almost completely rebuilt with only three regulars back from the 1955 squad. Replacements for the graduating gridders from last year's junior varsity and junior high teams gave a good account of themselves. Numerous injuries handicapped the team through- out the year. Evidence of the fact that the Wildcats impressed their opponents by their hard play can be found in the fact that five Monongahela players were chosen for the Big-Six teams. Fred Cox. outstanding fullback, was unanimously named to the first team of the 1956 All Big-Six Conference. Chuck Hillman, dependable halfback, was named to a second team berth with Tony Bove. Boyd Skaine, and Iim Voelker receiving honorable mention. Coach Ruth Nevin Girls' Athletics GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL The Monongahela High School girls' volleyball team, a member of the Monongahela Valley Volleyball League. was organized in 1953 at the annual track and field meet. Many of the girls who are members of this year's gradu- ating class have played on the team for three years. The girls have received no public recognition or awards although they have been runners-up and champions in tournament play, The 1956-57 season included several games with the women teachers of Monongahela High and also with the girls' teams from Donora. Charleroi, and California. The M.H.S girls also have the experience of playing on an almost professional level when they competed with the women's team of the Monongahela Turner's. A well developed river has as many sources as a tree has branches, all of which reach the trunk that empties into the sea. A river usually has its beginning far up in the mountains or the hills. The water is furnished by rain, snow, and springs. As the river flows on, other streams join it, and it continues to in- crease in size. The Monongahela River is formed by the confluence of the West Fork and the Tygart Rivers south of Fairmont, West Virginia. It flows north into south- western Pennsylvania and on to Pitts- burgh where it joins the Allegheny to form the Ohio River. The source of a river is comparable to the sophomores in high school, who are just beginning the course they will fol- low for the ensuing three years. Their future success will depend largely on the foundation which they lay at this time. The activities in which they partici- pate and the subjects they select will have an influence upon them throughout their lives. For the sophomores this is the beginning of the many decisions they must make in their life and their success, like that of the river, depends largely upon a gocd beginning. Forty-eight The picturesque Ohio River is formed by the junction of the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers at Pittsburgh. Pitts- burgh stands at the gateway of one of the greatest river sys- tems in the world and through its port passes river tonnage exceeding the peacetime records of the Panama Canal. Today Pittsburgh is one of the world's greatest business and indus- trial centers. The water transportation system and the city's fine location give easy access to great fields of bituminous coal which have made Pittsburgh the greatest iron and steel pro- ducing center the world has ever known. Seventy Boatbuilding on the Monongahela started with the craft built by the French garrison at Fort Duquesne. Shipbuilding yards grew rapidly as settlements were made on the shores of the Monongahela. River travel increased greatly, making it necessary for improvements in navigation to be made. The chief means of improvement was through a system of locks. In 1879 the federal government became interested and took an active part in this project. The function of the locks is to raise and lower the water levels to permit vessels to travel through unnavigable sections of the river. This system of locks. a total of approximately 15. is largely responsible for making the Monongahela River the outstanding carrier of tonnage of all American rivers. The administration and faculty of Monongahela High School play an important role in each students high school education. lt is their duty to guide the student through his studies and to assist him to solve problems or difficulties which may arise. Any student desiring counsel finds the mem- bers of the faculty and administration always willing to help.
