Divided into the editorial staff, business staff, writers, typists. artists, and the photographer, these boys and girls work to carry out the job of planning, writing. and publishing the book. The staff does most of their work in the journalism class, but their jobs do not end outside of class. Ideas are exchanged, assignments are made and the editors oversee the work of writing. typing, arranging lay-out, and plac- ing cartoons. They meet with the engraving representative, the Flame photographer, and cover representative to select designs and plans that will carry out the theme of the book. The business staff consists of twelve members under the supervision of Miss Burke. The main purpose of the business staff is to sell advertising space to the local business firms and to sell and distribute the FLAMES. The typists have the job oi typing every written word that goes to the printer. The girls also type rush business letters to the different companies concerned in supplying material for the book. The writers' first assignment is to get a list of all the seniors' names in alphabetical order and to divide them among the writers. Then the task of writing a character sketch of each senior begins. Captions for pictures and division pages are also made by the writers. The artists have the job of drawing the cartoons throughout the book and also drawing the figures for the division pages. The staff photographer assisted Mr. Traversari with the class and club pictures, and also took pictures throughout the school and at athletic events. Publishing the yearbook is one of the major projects of the senior class. The publication staff is responsible for gathering and arranging material for the school newspaper. The newspaper is published once a month, and distributed by the homeroom treasurers. -SW The newspaper staff consists of a chief editor, a news editor, a feature editor, and business manager, with their assistants. There are also reporters from each class in the senior high school. ln junior high the arrangement is different. Anyone there, is eligible to write and it their write-ups are approved, they are considered a writer for the month in which their story is published. The jobs of the chief editor are many. First. he must set the dead-line for material coming in for publication: then he sets up the dummy, arrang- ing everything correctly. He must check all material before it goes to the supervisor to be approved. And, it is the editor who takes the material to the Daily Republican to be published. The duty of the news editor is to collect the news and if it- has not been prepared in write-up form for the newspaper, the news editor assigns the article to reporters to be written. The news editor presents all news articles to the chief editor. The feature editor is responsible for gathering material on special occa- sions that take place in or concerning school activities. The feature editor also handles the write-ups about certain people or the columns on person- alities. Sending exchange papers to other schools is another job of the feature editor. The material is then typed by typists who work for the Flame also. Every article has to be typed perfectly and proof-read before it is sent to the printer. There are pictures in the newspaper every month, too, and the Flame photographer is responsible for taking them. While the Red and White Review is a comparatively new publication, it has beenyenthusiastically supported by the student body. During the second semester Larry McMahon was advanced to the edito- rial staii, serving with George Herbert as alternate managing editor. Robert Webster was appointed the new business manager. we Qedt 00l 6t0f9 The Senior Class of 1954 presented The Great Big Doorstep, a three-act comedy by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, to a ve.y enthusiastic audience on the first and second of April. The entire action of the play took place at the Crochet home in Grass Margin, Louisi- ana. Scenery for The Great Big Doorstep was outstanding due to its complete change from the usual room setting to an outdoor scene. Scenery and settings were constructed under the able direction of Miss Boyland, director, and the stage crew. The Crochets' oldest son, Arthur, fished a doorstep out of the Mississippi River, from that time on, the family's great goal was to find a house to go with the imposing doorstep. The Commodore, a man of many words and little action, was kept busy promising his wife, Duck, and oldest daughter, Topal, the better things of life. The quick remarks of the ten-year-old twins, Elna and Fleece, kept the family spirits high. The one person who seemed to trust in the Commodore implicitly was his fifteen-year-old daughter Evvie. Their problems were further increased by the demanding actions of their landlady, Mrs. Dupre, and Topal's ex-sweetheart, Tayo. The situation began to look a little brighter with the young Texan Tobin and lovable Uncle Dewey offering their help. When these two re- sources fell through, the florist from New Orleans appeared and bought Mama's hidden lilies for a fabulous price. With this money the Crochets bought a house to go with their doorstep. This year the band did not do the customary formations for their halftime shows at the week- ly football games. Instead they instituted a snappy new march and drill system which was enthusiastically received by all spec- tators. An important part of the band is the major- ette corps. It was rated so high in ability that the lVI.H.S. majorettes were chosen to march in Pitt Stadium for one of the University's foot- ball games. The highlight of the year is the annual band concert, which was held this year in April. At this event the band played a number of different types of music including marches, swing, popular, and some classical numbers. First Row-N. Gibson, E. Zippay, K. Porter, D. Anders, N. Hamilton, N. Its purpose is to acquaint members with various colleges, to interest students in going to college, and to study college life. Membership is open to juniors and seniors. Their activities in- clude having an All-College Night, and visiting colleges in which the students may be interested. Two of the more active clubs at M.H.S. are the history clubs: The Demo Club and the Sigma Rho Delta. The Demo Club is open to all senior history students, while the Sigma Rho Delta is a junior history club. These two clubs have very active schedules. The Sigma Rho Delta takes numerous, now traditional, trips to various historical spots such as Albert Gallatin's home, Lemoyne House, and Bushy Run. The Demo Club is one club that really exhibits true school spirit. The enthusi- astic senior history students who make up the club are constantly on the go. One of their activities includes a yearly visit to the County Court House in Washington, Pa., where they witness a court case. Their yearly activities are always high-lighted by the annual spring trip to the Nation's Capital. The chief aim of these history clubs is to prepare the students of today to become better citizens of tomorrow. Sixty-seven 5. 4 1 l J t 4 l l t A F - V l- 1. I I 7 I L L of f' 2 61, LVL CVM! PELLEGRINI DIPAOLA TAYLOR BOWMAN jaoflaff On August 18, 1953, some fifty boys were starting a new football season with a new coaching staff and a new system. Previously M.H.S. teams had used the traditional single wing. However, this year the new young coach, Frank Lignelli, decided to use the faster, more deceptive T-formation. The Cats got right down to work by dumping a good Snowden squad. Then fate stepped in with numerous injuries plaguing the Wildcat cause. Player aft- er player was injured until at one time fifteen boys were on Dr. Oehrle's list, of these, eight were regulars. But still the Wildcats' spirit wasn't gloomy. They fought hard, clean, and well in each of the remaining games. Local fans feel sure if a few breaks had come our way, some of the losses could very easily have been Wildcat victories. A lot of credit is due to the reserves who stepped in and made a good showing for the school. The team didn't win many games, but they fought hard and the school is still mighty proud of them. Matuga, Hodgson, Gondos, Mendola, Coach Benedetti Z?a4AeL'Aa! Coach Parkinson and his Cat cagers commenced this season by winning seven out of twelve exhibition games. In these seven victories, they bested some of the better teams in the WPIAL. Of these Bentleyville and Clairton were top contenders for their section. The Cats then turned their attention to the Section V competition. Luck just didn't seem to want to shine on our Wildcats. In their very first game they lost a thriller to Brownsville 51-50 in the closing seconds. When the Golden Dragons visited the Wildcat court it appeared that nothing wanted to go right for the Cats and everything the Dragons did went perfectly. The score ended 58-41. Next came Monessen. The Cats fought hard but succumbed to the Section V Champs B7-39. Away from home on the Cougar court the Cat cagers put up a terrific battle but again Lady Luck turned her back. M.H.S. ended on the short end of a 55-52 score. Victory was still absent from our record as the team dropped a hard-fought battle to California. After leading most of the game, the Cats fell behind to lose 58-53. At last the victory-starved Cats managed to salvage a Win over the Brownies from Brownsville. Playing at pre-season form, the Cats could have whipped any team in the section this night. The score of the game finally ended 63-58. Donora welcomed the M.H.S. cagers for what they thought would be an easy game. The gallant struggle for victory fell short 57-51. Traveling to Monessen. the upset-minded Cats were disappointed. The Greyhounds just had too much for our cagers. The game ended in a lopsided score of 53 to 44 in favor of the Section V Champs. Revenge was obtained when Charleroi visited Wildcat Knoll. ln a very gruelling contest the Cats showed they were capable of playing good ball and went on to romp over the Cougars 67 to 53. The black cat jinx seemed to hover over the M.H.S. boys as they played their final game of the season at California. The Trojans playing on their home court were jdstiyn. Nothing could stop them. Final score: 44 to 33: in favor of C.H.S. g -J Not all was so gloomy in the Cat season.
