This, of course, did:1't worry the 'Cats as was shown in the game. So what if the score was 12-O in favor of llonessen? The first downs favor- ed us 6-5, and Mon City had the real football sp rit tliroxglioiit the whole game! Nice going, 'Catsll CLAIRT ON VVhen the Light Went On Again for the Monongahela fans, they found them- selves facing probably the toughest of all valley teaxns-Clairton. The Cobras had the 'Cats outweighed 10 pounds per man, but still the Red and White did a good job. The final score-Cl-I.S.-33, M.H.S.-7! DONORA And now for our favorite rivalsDonora. fA111 I kidding?J This game was a regular battle from the first kizkoff to the final blow of the whistle. The game end- ed in a 6-6 tie. The Dragon-Wildcat jinx held true once more-who will break it? I guess we will just have to wait and see! ELIZABETH You've heard of Old Man River, haven't you? That's the only way we can best describe our favorite team at the Monongahela-Elizabeth game, for the 'Cats surely just kept rolling along. As a result they washed over the banks of Betty- town to the tune of 25-6. BROWNSVILLE Although there was a small representation from M.H.S. that spirit for which we are noted throughout the valley was up to par. The snow and mud made the odds against the 'Cats even greater. However, constant fighting on the part of Brownsville was required to enable them to get their touchdowns. At the final blow of the whistle the score stood:-B.H.S.-28, M.H.S.-0. NEW KENSINGTON The following Saturday evening the 'Cats traveled to Arnold, Pa., where they came face to face with the New Kensington gridders. The Red and White were truly stubborn in this game. But as you no doubt know from experience, the best team doesn't always win! This was shown in the Mon City-New Ken game for the score was 13-6, favoring Ken High. Incidentally, three of our boys were selected on New Ken's All Opponents Team. CHARLEROI Now for the heart-breaker game of the season, Charleroi. CAs if I have to tell you.J The Gremlins surely must have been at work against us that fateful Fri- day evening, especially when that 105 yard run was called back only to become a Charleroi touchdown. However, the 'Cats did score first, with the final score being C.H.S.-20, M.H.S.-6. Oh, well, we'll get our revenge in 1944, won't we fellows? TRINITY Back on their own field again our Wildcats decided to make up for the disap- pointment at Charleroi, and they did. The only touchdown of the evening came in the last Zle minutes of the game, after a pass which was good for 27 yards was completed. The ball was carried over from the three yard line and the placement kick was good, resulting in a final score of 7-O, the Wildcats being the victor. CAN ONSBURG And so came Armistice Day and the winding up of the 1943 Pigskin Parade. The 'Cats met the Canonsburg Gunners here and sank their claws into them, finishing out 'in front with a score of 28-6. The Gunners were no match for our Cats, though they kept us on our toes to the very end of the game. And so, we ended the 1943 season. It may not have been successful as other seasons, but just remember, you don't have to be tops -to be best. Dixon, Aekman, Horniekel, Downer, and Malena returning from last year's squad. However, Dirk Aek- man 6' 4 1-enter was declared ineligible early in the seasong Dixon 6' 1 for- ward was forced out because of an ear ailmentg Horniekel, a dependable guard left for the armyg and Downer, another good guard was injured playing foot- ball. This left just NVhite and Cepaitis from last year's team around which to build. Malena, who saw some action last year, fitted in at one of the for- wards to give M. ll. S. three performers with some! experience. Lack of ex- perienced substitutes hindered the team as all the subs were sophomores. Re- gardless of their tough breaks, the boys gave their best in every game. BEACH .JlIlHNSUN'E REMARKS White Could probably make any high school team in the state. Clever passer, dribbler, and an excellent shot. Cepaitis Shifted to center-always gives his best and when hitting is one of the best shots in the game. A A Very fast and aggressive-a dead shot on either side of the floor. Malena Petrosky Very good ball handler and long shot-cool when the going is tough. Danti Only tall player on team-always gives his best and makes it tough for the opposing team. Smith This sophomore has shown signs of becoming one of the best M. H. S. floor- men. Well, set your mind at rest, friends, for, it may interest you to know that he has been a mem-ber of the 1944 graduating class for four years. He is a player in the High School Band, belongs to the Hi-Y and Sigma Rho Delta, and is the constant and faithful companion of Paul Walsh, who, I dare say is familiar to most of you. Indeed the two fellows are so alike that they are sometimes confused as being one and the same person. But, do not let this false idea lead you astray, for, in spite of the fact that the boys have similar character traits and, shall we say, similar mischievous propensities, research has proved that they are two distinct persons. What about George Smith before he came to M. H. S.? Well, it being my job to find out as much as possible about the past life of Our Friend, I have delved into the mystery of the ages and have come forth from my bewildering search with the following information. About fifty years ago, before Columbus discovered America, there lived, in the far western city of New York, a down-and-out family from across the tracks whose name was Smith. In an era when crickets refused to chirp at night without time and a half pay, a boy was born to these folks and they named him George. Ah yes, those were pretty bad times, my friends! Meanwhile, Our Friend grew up in surroundings sweet and untainted by the vulgar low-life which then infested the country. Therefore, George, about to start out in the world, was blissfully ignorant of the trials and tribula- tions of a normal human life. To begin with, George's education was not as it should be. His knowledge of things practical consisted in the knowing of his name and how to walk, talk, eat, drink and sleep. So you see, friends, George was woefully ignorant. But nothing daunted, he started west- ward to the state of Georgia alone, at the ripe age of four and a half months, in his convertible hen- coop. During this cumbersome trip, Our Friend became aware of the fact that he knew almost noth- ing about the world in general. At one time he gave way to such sorrowful tears that a black- browed beetle shook his head regretfully in the dust. Three months later, however, at the age of ten. he arrived at his destination and was immediately employed by a Civil VVar slave-owner as a hog caller for a barn dance social. But, due to such minor difficulties as the absence of a 'barn and a pain in the 'big toe of George's left foot, which was daily beginning to torture him, the plan fell through. Cur Friend then migrated to a section of the country Where the price of silk was two cents per acre. This state of affairs worried George, but he found consolation in whittling fish's tails and chew- ing gum in his off hours. He then entered a contest which awarded a box of sawdust to the man who could lift an ounce of silo silk with both hands. George won it. But his troulbles were far from over for, by this time, George was attracting much attention from the feminine world, and the women noted all those little details which make it necessary to describe his appearance minutely. He was rather a tall, husky fellow, all of three and one half feet, and his feet were rather small, almost fitting into a size ten and one half shoe. He had the curliest crop of straight hair that ever adorned a bald head. His speech had the graceful, soothing quality of a horse's whinny, and his heart was as good as silver. He was becoming quite a well-known figure in the Argentine pampas of Washington state. Why, folks, he even made headline news by his heroic efforts at rescuing a fat French poodle from a watery death in Mrs. Murphys bathtub. He exposed the sinister plot of Stale Air and Co. sharpers who were making a bold attempt at stealing the eyes out of potatoes. They just weren't smart enough for Our Friend! For, needless to say, he had picked up an education for himself while roam- ing the country hither and yon. Experience is the best teacher. Later he unearthed the mystery at Have a Coke Lane by 'burning a paper which contained all the evidence. But George, tired of his public life, took the Alaskan Express to Boston, Ohio, where he lost aJl his wearing apparel in a crap game. George, of course, did not wish to be seen in such a condition so he broke into a clothing store, outfitted himself in a zoot-suit and hotfooted it up to Broadway. Thus 'began George's life of crime. His first arrest came for placing invisible strings across ladies' paths. whereupon., the poor damsels shrieked and toppled over the invisible obstruction. Close in succession came his detention in Sing Sing for a varied assortment of lesser crimes which included the assassination of Dick Tracy, robbing an ant's storehouse, sitting with all his twenty pounds on a buttercup, escorting a pig to a ball attended by the elite of the city, ejecting garbage into his neigh- bor's rainbarrel, and pasting the pages of school textbooks together. This last, proclaimed for him the undying gratitude of thousands of school children, for a few days at least, After our friend's release from prison, he decided to turn over a new leaf, which consisted in joining up with Low-Life Looie's Looney Caravan for Lunatics fThat was just a trade name.J He gave great sales-talks on the invigorating qualities of Perry Winkle's Pills for Pale-Faced People. But at this point, the pain in his big toe became so acute that he was immediately rushed to a central hospital. The doctors shook their heads all night long over Our Friend's deplorable condition and finally came to the conclusion that his toe must be amputated, and so it was. You see, friends, George's path of life up to this time had been obstructed by those invisible demons, the bad ground Gremlins. But when he directed his steps to our fair city, his tormentors, the bad Gremlins. first made a reconnaissance flight over the town and decided that there were too many good Gremlins floating around, so they went in search of some other victim. In the halls of M. H. S. George Smith has found the rest and respite his soul had so yearned for since the day of his advent upon this earth. He is quite his merry old self now, plays hookey, is noisy at assemblies, passes notes, and is an all-around regular fellow. He is always eager to participate in any activity which calls for volunteers, whereupon the name of George Smith always appears on the list in hand writing never twice the same. George Smith, may you always love M. H. S. and spend your lifetime in its halls instilling your merry spirit into every boy and girl privileged to be educated there.
