After an hour of cheerful conversation during which I learned that George lVIcDougal was Seckary of Treasury, I returned to my desk. I gleaned that Leroy Hoon was on trial in High Court for speeding, with Reinard Liandefeld doing cross- examination, and Virginia Borland was a famous sob-sister working for Virginia Yohe, editor of Liberty. Was I surprised? Not much, as I remembered their fine work on the FLAYME of dear old lVI. H. S. I telephoned the court and learned that Leroy Hoon was behind the bars for 10 years for speeding and resisting an oflicer. Keystone State Building. Yessir, I'll be right up. The Staff has a cozy little room just across the hall from the cafeteria, In this room ou1' staff shared its work and fun in preparing the' year book. M1'. Suttles and Bliss Stewart worked and Worried along with us. Our Staff had manyi difficulties to face, and overcome. Oi. . llll Iln llll lliil ' The Flame of 1932 we were three months late getting started, which meant about three times as much work as is usually necessary. Our staff this year was smaller than last yearls, and to make matters worse, our little Editor-in-Chief, Virginia Yohe, was rushed to the hospital with acute appendicitis. After our work was nicely on its way, a few of our members gave speeches in Assembly like real orators. Then we started our subscription campaign, and what a campaign that was! The members ran all over the building getting subscriptions. The Annual Staff wants to thank the underclassmen and seniors for the splendid cooperation they have given us. We also Want to thank the teachers who obtained for us some very valuable information. It has been a pleasure, to all the Staff mem- bers to Work, and get experience, and have fun all at the same time. We wish the next year's class as much pleasure with the annual as we have had. This interesting comedy which played to full house lylarch 3, 1932, was opened by the congenial llflrs. lVIartyn taken by lovely' Edith Stone. The title role was played by Williaili VVatson, our future Clark Gable. .Miss Violet Pinney, the governess, was portrayed by vivacious Mary Jane Somerville. What a time the poor wornout girl had with the impossible Cora and the unreasonable Bobby VVheeler, portrayed by llflary Louise Patterson and George MCDOLlgal. Louise Printz and Howard Gadd were well castias M1's. and Mr. Wheeler' who befriended Clarence. Everybody fell in love with the ex-soldier from lovable Cora to Della the housemaid, played cleverly by Sue Weygandt. Clarence was not very well liked by Mr. Hubert Stem, CW'illiam Kahlej once loved by Cora, nor by the butler, Din- Widdie CAngelo Curciol. The play topped a grand climax with Clarence and lwiss Pinney leaving a dejected Cora to be married and live happily ever after. Suttles and Miss Stevenson, whose super- vision made possible many interesting and valuable meetings. The primary purpose of this club is to give to the Commercial students a broader outlook on the Commercial world and to acquaint them with business men. At the first meeting, olhcers were elected as follows: President, Agnes Jones, vice president, Mayme Pecig secretary, C-rladys Hall, treasurer, Catherine Ranzini. A program committee consisting of Dorothy Banks and Bertha Nakutis was appointed to prepare programs throughout the year. Mr. Corwin J. Barclay furnished an interesting talk at one of the meetings, which proved to be quite valuable to the Commercial students. - At a later meeting a play-a comedy-was given by Dorothy Banks, Bernice Bode, Angelo Curcio, and Ida Boyce. The play illustrated the don'ts in applying for a job. It was a valuable aid to those who will be seeking iobs' in the near future. At a meeting held in March, the Junior Commercial students Were invited. Le Cercle Francais was organ- ized on the 12th day of May, 1931. Our oflicers were chosen at a glorious banquet, given by last yeWr's club for the mem-bers of our present club. There are approxi- mately thirty lively members in OUI' club. Every month we manage to meet at the home of some of our members, although our first meeting was held at the high school, and the second at lVIiss Lazzari's home. In spite of the fact that half the time we did not know what the other fellow was saying, we had heaps of fun. We always had an interesting program of entertainment. We presented a play in Assembly called, i P'auvre Sylvief' The cast was as follows: Sylvie, Doris Clemens, Madame Darcourt, Annabelle Sweeney, Cecile Dar- court, Louise Printz, Marie fcookl, Sue Weygandt, Pierre, Louis Mainie, Jeanne, Dorothy Law, Miss Nancy, lVIary Louise Patterson, La Marchaxlde de Gateaux, Sara Sutman, Le Vendeur de Journeaux, Williaxli Bregar, Le Commis Vayageur, Howard Gadd. We also had a banquet for the election of next year's ofificers. The oHicers of the French Club are: President, Kathleen Bregar, vice-presidents, William Kahl and lVIary Louise Patterson, secretary, Dorothy Law, treasurer, Sara Sutman, sponsor, lVIiss Suzanne Lazzari. ' Miss Lazzari has been a wonderful sponsor and the club expresses its deepest appreciation for her sweet disposition and kindness, which has made it possible for us to have so much fun. We ushers form a band of 14 regulars with uniforms and two sub- stitutes, Jane Anderson and Theresa Curry. We started the year by serving our grid heroes and the school board at the Annual Football Banquet, on December 14, 1931. The classes of Nlonongahela High School celebrated George Washington's birthday by. holding on that day their annual Parent's Day. Mrs. Stewartls ushers instructed the visitors to the rooms of their interests and to the program in the audi- torium. March 3, we ushered the delighted audience to their seats to witness Clarence, the Senior play. Mr. Smith directed a concert on MHI'Ch 24, 1932. Four of the regular ushers were in charge. Baccalaureate, Class Night, and Com- mencement, are the last functions of t-he school year at which the girls usher. Bac- calaureate was on Ma.y 22, Class Night, May 24, and Commencement on May 25 The places of Virginia Yohe, Virginia Borland, Betsy Hartland, and Ma1'y Louise Patterson will be taken by four other lucky girls. The ushers of 1932 certainly wish the coming ushers as much enjoyment from working for M1'S. Stewart as they had. Q -- ,A 1 CARRIC-K , pThe next Week' saw our Wildcats easily defeat the highly over-rated team from C-arriclc, 19-0. The Pittsburgh lads came here highly. rated, but they were no match for our fighting Cats. In this game a great improvement was seen in our team, and great things were expected during the season, HOMESTEAD Qui' Wildcats continued their winning ways at the expense of Ho-mestead's gridders the next game by an 18-O score. This put our -total win streak up to three, and the next week saw our boys practicing hard for the next game with Trinity, to be played at College Field, Washington. . H ' A ' Q- TRINITY ' ' A trip to Washington for the first game away from home, and the students who saw-the game, saw ourl team easily defeat Trinity 26-O. In this game our secondteam showed their poweriby scoring two touchdowns on the VVashington lads. C-LAI RTOIN Mono-ngahela then suffered her first defeat of the season at the hands of a stronger and heavier team from Clairton. Although our team fought hard they were unable to stem the onrush of Stilley, Clairton's 220-pound fullback, and his mates. The game ended with Monongahela, on the short end of a 33-0 score. GREYHOUNDS On a gridiron covered with mud, and in a drizzling rain, lVIonongahela went down to defeat by a lighter and faster team from Monessen, 32-0. Although Monon- gahela fought furiously, the mud, and the faster team were too much for them to overcome. COUG-ARS At Charleroi, the next week, Monongahela's offense began to click, but they were beaten 27-0. This was the last defeat for the Wildcats in the 1931 grid season. BEARS Our boys then put a scare into the California crew the next week-end, holding the highly-rated up-valley boys to a scoreless tie. Qui' team had the ball on Cali- fornia's two-yard line in the third quarter, but failed to tally through California's staunch defense. GUNNERS Although the 'Cats traveled to Canonsburg and outplayed the Gunners in every possible way, they managed to eke out a 13-6 win. It was an off day for our team, and should have easily scored more points than they managed to do. Q DRAGONS Our Wildcats rang down the curtain on a very successful season Thanksgiving Day, holding Russel's Donora Dragons to a 6-6 tie. Cummings saved the game in the last quarter, by snaring a short forward pass, and racing over the goal line to tie the game. Because of losing so many 'gamesby such a scant margin, they won only six games, losing four- teen.l The outstanding game of the year was played on the home court when our boys heldj Braddock, later crowned W. P. I. A. L. champions, to a close win by 27-20. Charlexfioiwas almost: thrown down to defeat by our Cats, but we fell short of the score 17-13. Charlero-i was crowned Section V champions and later lost in the W. P. l. A. L. semi-final to the New Kensington lads. The last home game of the year, with less than three minutes to play, saw Glassport leading us by a 20-17 score. To show they, had the old Wildcat fight of former years, they Hashed all around the Hoor, like a college team, and took Glass- port by a 23-20 score, - In Section V, the Wildcat defeated West Newton twice, but were unable to break into the win columns against the other section teams. With six seniors receiving letters, McMillin will have to depend on Conte',UC'oker, and Hoffman, of this year's varsity squad, and the reserve outfit for next near. This team did very well for their first year together, winning ten games and losing only to- Monessen and Glassport twice. 1 T The outlook is bright, though, due to the fact that all the schools in the district will lose most of their stars this year. Like the previous freshies, we fell for that now age- worn gag of having an elevator to go up- stairs by, that free meals were served in the Cafeteria, and that-we would find a great school of 209 rooms. Our faces were so much painted up with iodine that they opened a new drug store to supply the Sophs' needs. What else did they use? Well, everything from itching powder to paddling were in their form of hazing. I mean to tell you, we got it bad, but we were expectant, Cnext yearj. Sure, we bit like all the other suckers, but we learned fast. It didn't take us long to get organized. VVe picked jimmy Sedam for pres- ident ftoo had he quit schooljg Mary jane Somerville for vice-presidentg a farmer Uames Colej for secretary and Ruth Barclay for treasurer. Mr. Clark acted as sponsor. VVe had quite a few good parties, but like all other under dogs were not given oppor- tunity to Hash. SOPHOMORES-Did we get the breaks! And how! We expected to get a chance to do some art work on the following freshies but-here's how it was:-Mr. Crane issued a Proclamation of Emancipation and haz- ing was from then on a violation of the law and punishable by a hard term in Detention. Please notice that Detention is capitalized, as it has become so popular a recreational insti- tution that they are making bids for a chance to spend time in it. Do I hear you asking who was the sponsor. That was Miss johnson and we elected none other than Speedl' Crall for president. Jim Cole was again our farm-hand secretary -gum-Qng1sg-.Qugugugng-.gf-gugng Q.sg.nQ-.Q0.Q..Qu.gngngngngng-.gag-. 'a xt C+. -rl 5 . The class that was most interesting to us Cnot to the numerous insects and animalsj was Biol- ogy. Do you still remember how We waited from day to day for the tadpoles to hatch out? Almost as bad as the ardent gardener watch- ing for that first blade or shoot of verdant vegetation in the spring. Our parties con- tinued getting bigger and better and every- body was happy. Then came 'itime out for another vaca- tion which seemed' all too long.- JUNIORS-Juniors? juniors, did you say? Oh yes, I remember now, we were Sophs last year and now we're Juniors. I've got to get me a new hat. This is getting tight. Am I getting swell-headed? We started up with a Hbangf' by calling Speed, Crall back for another termg getting Helen Nagy to serve as vice-president and believe it or not Qby permission of Ripleyj we had a real secretary, Agnes Jones., An.- toinette Viara was given the class check book and Miss Young acted as sponsor. VVe all fell for Mr. Rankin. He was our new physics teacher. Hasn't he nice curly hair? And those neckties-Q We'll take that up later, quote, unquotej. We got sent out of physics class plenty and 'most every night had to stay to wash a variety of objects num- bering from blackboards to chemistry dishes. . Then along came the Junior Play, named A Perplexing Situation, with a cast com- posed of Gadd, Sutman, Crall, Law, Barclay, Patterson, Stone, VVeygandt, Rushton, Jones, McDougal, Kelly, and last but thirteenth, Hoon. Then there was also a French club, titled Le Cercle Francais, well supervised by Miss Lazzari. And, here's a tip to the Sophomores. Therebnever was a more friendly and pleasant teacher of lan- guage than Miss Lazzari, so put French I and II on your schedule. fNote to Miss Lazzarrf-50 cents for this ad.J Having nothing more to say, I'll now let you in on the Senior secrets. SENIOR-This is a senior class. gone air- mindedf' Grub and Hoonie vie for first honors as chief pilot, while Brutus acts as chiefpmechanic and ship builder. fVVhere does that air-minded Kensinger come in? He's so quiet.l Through the open window, plane after plane zooms out into the celestial blue of the placid sky filled with skirmishing, streaking, white clouds. ' Now I'm getting sentimental CMiss -Car- penter detests Edgar A. Guest for thatj, so I'll just change the subject by telling you that Speed Crall and Agnes Jones hold the same position as last year and that James Cole is vice-president now. The name of.Lee Ward occupies the space designated as trease urer and Mr. Holmes is ,the brand new P.' O. D. teacher that's a big success as sponsor. And then there's the Senior Play that I forgot to mention. You'll ,find that elsewhere in this hook, but I must say that Miss Car- penter deserves much credit for putting on such a well trained cast and a perfect play. I thought I forget something. In fact it was two things. They are so important, too. First was the Glory Barn, that new addition to the main building to cope with the sudden desire for learning. We have over 900 stu- dents in this high school and it is getting a little crowded. Second was the moving pictures.
