They're nothing but carbon copies of the truth. That's why they're here, to re- mind you that somewhere in the pastMonona Grove has given you something positive. The picture of the hallway means nothing unless you walked it. Maybe it was empty and you trudged the long walk to your locker after a make-up test. Or maybe it was full of people, happy as they packed up for the weekend. Only you know what happened. Did someone or something affect your life in a classroom such as this? Did some teacher touch ona bit of philosophy and then fleetingly pass on, leaving some of it imbedded? You may have discovered an area of Work that may someday become your future career. Science never appealed to you until you entered a chemistry lab or the resource center. You may never have even considered Speech as an area of study until you shakingly rested your hands on the podium for the first time. If nothing else, let these pictures remind you of the good, however seemingly insignificant, that passed there. SOCIAL LIFE This is Monona Grove- the social part. Do you remember Homecoming, 1966? The gala festivities of the rally, the parade, and the elaborate preparations led up to the finale of the dance. But the monumental events were not the only parts of social life, each day brought new people, conversations, and its own events. Maybe you struck up a friendship over a life-and-death game of chess in the MG Room. Or maybe a bond was initiated as two unacquainted people cheered the team to victory. Or the class unity grew stronger in the pep contest competition. Or perhaps you found a friend amidst the gorging population at break. Although these memories may grow harder to recall as time passes, they are presented here to you to be remembered only as you wish them to be. 5 X 1 5 5-'. FACULTY Cy Vale, Bob Winters, Jim Skiles, Glen Onsager, Wallace Wikoff, Mrs. Joyce Chern, and also Gerald Wilkie. A high school program should be designed to meet as Well aspossible the needs of all youth, regardless of vocational aim or academic ability. It follows that a sound educational program must be provided for those Whose abilities will qualify them to pursue the most rigorous academic career in college or university, for those who are completely non -academically inclined, and for all between those extremes . The high school should do this with equal respect for all groups and with proper appreciation for the contribution which each group will make in its vocational pursuits. 8 I am continually impressed and encouraged by the day by day evidence of students taking an increasing measure of responsibility for their own educational development . That Mon- ona Grove students in the past have developed a high degree of personal responsibility and self-discipline is reflected in the success patterns that reveal themselves through per- iodic follow-up studies of each graduating class . A drop-out rate that yearly is less than one percent- a truly remarkable record- in- dicates the regard that our young people have for an education and, hopefully, for the record that must accompany the diploma- paper sym- bol of accomplishment. A Wide variety of studies and reports from the guidance depart- ment, staff committees, departments, and individual teachers verify one's observations and impressions that young people are con- cerned With preparing themselves for the challenges and opportunities that lie in the unpredictable future . To me, the young people of Monona Grove High School daily refute the cynical cries of the critics of youth and the forecasters of doom. 9 MR . DONALD HHS TAD PRINCIPAL MR. Tradition- ally it unites the four commissions and the A.F .S. Committee as well as providing a unit to voice student opinion. The success of these commissions and other projects are those of Student Council also. Meetings, presided over by jim Matson, were full of discussion and sparked with laughter. Having out- grown the existing Student Council room, meetings were held almost anywhere . Visitors were welcome but infrequent. The trophy case in the entrance could no longer hold the evidence of MG's glories . The Student Council undertook the project of obtaining another . The Christmas Assembly also came under the directions of the Student Council. The orchestra began the program and introduced the choir which filed in in a candlelight procession. The mens faculty quartet performed a few numbers also. There was even a visit from our own Irish Santa with raucous elves scattering goodies in his wake. Christmas carols sung by the entire student body, concluded the program . Serious discussions concerning school spirit in 1965-66 resulted in the rebirth of the Student Faculty Relations Committee . The committee was designed to promote better understanding between teachers and students. Unfortunately, high hopes faded when rare committee meetings brought only suggestions that exams shouldn't accumulate on the same day in a variety of subjects . But to us it seems that Surinder Kaur Iessy, Monona C-rove's AFS student from Malaysia, has been here all her life. We felt that she understood us from the begin- ning but was still eager to see more. She has a sharp sensitivity to peoples' ways and wants to learn about ours. She will never accept them without thought, though, and we can only respect her more for this. Her British-English is fluent for she speaks it in her school at home where she is in the Arts stream. She makes tremendous Curries, which, at home they eat twice a day, being of Indian descent. She says that she doesn't mind our food, though. flixtra pounds will attest. Q Now she is thinking of applying to the U. N. We all wish her luck, she seems to be a natural ambassador with a feeling for people and problems. A.F.9 DLIQTY S The Buehner Family Cathy, Mrs. Buehner, Dusty, Kurt, Mr. Buehner, Chris Dusty, the A. F. S. student who joined MG at the 2nd se- mester, comes from Thailand. Her lst semester was spent in Rockford Ill. and in that time she has learn to speak English very fluently. Dusty had studied English in Bangkok, Thailand, but after arriving in America, the atmosphere of English-speaking people and the necessity has helped her knowledge of English to increase greatly. The most striking difference that Dusty has found between schools is that American schools provide a social as well as academic program for the students. Here there are clubs and athletic activities to join in or observe, and JOIN Dusty did. She's in GAA bowling, the reporting staff of the EAGLE POST, and FBLA, as well as AFS committee. She loves to cheer and finds it interesting as well as exciting to attend regularly. She also enjoys our dances. People have given her a warm welcome and we wish her well. SOCIAL COMMISSION Wiggly followed by a very put- out clerk carrying a cumbersome box? This scene preluded Home- coming, the greatest social event of the Fall sea- son. It's Social Commission's duty to ease the bumps of the complex 3-day festival. The 7 girls were part of the sweatshir1:-and- jean clad army encamped in Vogel's garage. The assignment was to build a float to beat those of Pep and M. G. Room Commissions. By night, the haywagon underwent the metamorphophis of chang- ing into a float--an octopus guarding the opponents team and bearing the words Cage the Cards! By day, Social Commission members prepared dance decorations. Through their efforts, Homecoming was a success and the green octopus did win the float competition. Dirty paint brushes, no clean containers, words spelled wrong, tape that won't stick and a sink that won't work are just some of the troubles that Pep Commission met with this year. But the troubles were overlooked in hopes that the girls on the Commission could raise the spirit in M. G. Every Wednesday night from about 4:00 to 5:00 twenty or more girls would put their ideas together and splash them on the long strips of white paper lying in the hallway. Homecoming came and went with Pep Commission's help. Athletes were served doughnuts and milk after a strenuous afternoon or evening of competition. Color Day came twice this year as penants and buttons were sold in an atmosphere of blue and white. This year's Pep Commission attempted to bring the entire student body into the realm of competition that our athletes found themselves in throughout the 1966-67 school year. That answer, anyone would say, is easy --to provide a place for students to get books and do some last minute studying. This is true--but the library does more. Its modern facilities include three almost soundproof conference rooms, the verticle files finfor- mation compiled on almost any subject and arranged in foldersj, filmstrips, records, tapes, micro -films, newspapers, magazines, and Wall-to -Wall bookshelves . For reference, the library has encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases, and even the trusty almanac . To administer the library's vital services are several librarians and the student Library Club. Members are a familiar sight in the Library and a rarity in their study halls . Cutting study halls for library Work is characteristic . Most o the Library Club members love Working in the library. Consisting of more than 20 students, they traveled throughout the state obtaining an impressive record and rep- utation. Although the teams Weren't solidified until after Christmas, they had a con- sistently fine record. Everyone from the novice to the Varsity Weathered the dark and cold Winter morn- ings and the bumpy rides in a caravan of coaches' cars. Most of the rides concluded in an additional but unintentional tour of the city and local information -giving gas stations in search of the destination . Badeau. The successes of the Varsity included first place at the Beloit, Shorewood, Sheboy- gan North, Monona Grove, Badger Conference, and District tournaments. Beloit was victory for all teams ending in a 17-l sweep of the tournament. Most important, how- ever, Was the fact that the Varsity achieved the privilege of going to the State tourna- ment as one of the best teams in the state. But all successes were backed by the unified Work of all team members under Mr . O'Brien's dedicated guidance. Without the constant interaction, cooperation and hard Work put forth by all, the '66-'67 Debate team Would not have been What it Was. With these four qualities in mind, the National Honor Society chose thirteen juniors and six seniors for membership in early October. The senior members, previously elected, conducted tapping ceremonies during first period. All went well except for a slight fand intentional? D slip of mind that caused re-entry into two math classes. For a week gold keys worn around nineteen necks were seen throughout school. Thursday, October 13, these keys were replaced with small, gold N. H. S. pins. Again, the advisor, Mrs. Thompson was pleased with the success of the solemn installation ceremony. All was not perfect, however, for a certain junior boy couldn't quite contain his dismay when he ended up in the wrong row of chairs. With Kathy Skaar, President, Marybeth Johnson, Vice-President, Sandy Huemmer, Secretary, and Ann Erickson, Treasurer leading the way, the National Honor Society undertook three projects. An honor pass committee, headed by Chris Buehner, investigated the possibility of some type of honor pass for worthy students. The red tape entangling this part of project slowed its progress to a halt. A very successful committee led by Kathy Skaar pro- vided N. H. S. members as tutors for students who needed or requested them. A third com- mittee, led by Debbie Hunter undertook the task of planning an exceptional field trip for the National Honor Society for the end of a year of busy service work. DISTRIBUTIVE EDUCATION L 81 EAGLE POST Can you remember kids trudging down the halls with copies of the paper spilling from all sides? Perhaps you Weren't a Witness, but every third Friday, this sight be- came a reality. Much Work Went into the EAGLE POST before distribution day. The copy had to be organized, dummied onto the sheets, and proofread at the printer. Even when mistakes occurred, they were forgotten if the students were satisfied With the content. But because of the EAGLE POST, editors and reporters learned the art of journalism and the students of MG received an interesting, informative News- paper to read and enjoy.
