PAUL THOMPSON ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL 5 MILLION SECONDS-- This is,'roughly, the amount of time you spent in school this year, the time in which most of the vast educational opportun- ities offered at Monona Grove High' School will be made available to you. Every second presented an opportunity, a challenge, a chance to increase your knowledge and further your development. Every sec- ond put to good use was yours to keep. Its learn- ings will prove invaluable as you have invested it in the building of skills, de- sirable attitudes and per- sonal responsibility in yourself. You will be able to relive the moment of your high school career through the yearbook. The value of a high school education cannot be over- estimated in the day and age in which we live. To underestimate its value would be a grave mistake for the youth of this or any other nation. The people of our nation, holding a high respect for education and taking advantage of the educational opportun- ities afforded them, are regarded not only as the backbone of our democ- racy, but as the best de- fense of the security of our great country. Having only one year of English, Ana had problems with our language at first but learned quickly. She hopes to become an English- Spanish secretary in Guatemala and eventually a teacher. Her year in America will be a big help. Life is busier and noisier than at the Instituto de la Ascunion, the private girls' school Ana at- tended in Guatemala. There Were uniforms, and more subjects and less homework per subject. There were Christmas fiestas of turkey and tamales. But this year, Ana's home was Monona- Grove. We hope she liked it. LUCIANO SPANGHER Luciano Spangher, foreign exchange student from Gorizia, Italy has proved to be a most exhilarating addition to the M. G. student body. Indeed, Luciano is a very well-rounded indi- vidual, he speaks English intelligibly and understands Spanish, French, and German. He is an avid cyclist, a prize-winning broad jumper, and a supporter of slow dances. Luciano says that Italian education is more formal and more specialized than that in America. Since he is studying to become an engineer he is presently taking advanced math, shop, and mechanical drawing. During his stay in America, he would like to visit as many other states as possible. If we Americans oould spread as much charm, warmth, and good will as has our Italian AFS'er, indeed this country would be wonderful. J EFF SWANSON jeff Swanson calls it the greatest ex- perience of my life, his summer as an A. F. S. student in Hong fpronounced like hook while burpingj, Denmark. There, home was a rural area, and father occupation was a poultry butcher. Jeff's experiences range from practicing the family trade to going to the stock car races to visiting Han-ilet's castle. Although his Danish vocabulary was limited to a few key phrases like I'm hungry on his arrival, he learned quickly. And there was no language barrier in the most important part of his trip--meeting people. As jeff said, The more people I met the more I came to understand that they weren't Danes. . . nor was I an American, but rather we were all just people. KEIJI FUJITA Everything is strange, was Keiji Fugita's first impression of America. As our inde- pendent foreign exchange from Tokyo, japan, Keiji found that Monona Grove stu- dents enjoyed much more freedom than those at home. In Tokyo, classes have as many as 60 students, all courses are re- quiredg everyone wears uniforms. Keiji also had some trouble with the food when he first arrived, but soon learned to like it so well that he gained 10 pounds. This extra weight was important for his wrestling. Here, he impressed a quantity of freshmen fand a few seniorsj by promising to demonstrate judo. Keiji likes America. As he put it, I love Madison, I love MG High, and am happy to live in such a beautiful place, and to study in such a great school. THE NEW LIBRARY Walking down the front corridor at the beginning of the school year, the average Monona Grove student noticed a large, dirty, and drafty room nearly devoid of books, desks and other materials common to schools. Was it to be the new dungeon? No! In spite of its forbidding appearance, the room became our beautiful new library. The inconvenience caused by the lack of adequate furniture, books, shelves, and maga- zine racks is offsetted by the benefits students will reap from the library. In the future, Monona Grove students will enjoy a large, well-supplied, and airy library where they can study easily. at Gowns f ,,,, P WS '1 M, ! 4 3227 ,....f A f ii N... Q 1 -1315235 G V ? ' The Home Economics Department added a boon to the ceremony by designing and making two royal cloaks of ruby velvet. Mr. Krizmanic donated his masterpiece in the form of a bejeweled crown for the King. Floats made by the three commissions and the FTA carried out Barb Buchanan's brainchild of a theme, Born to Victory. The floats, constructed at the homes of Jeri Goff, Dave Paterson, Shari Woodrow, and Gwyn Lewis, created both rivalry between and comradeship among the organizations. Frenzied stuffing of napkins, hammering of fingers, and bartering with shopkeepers produced four beautiful floats as the constructors worked late almost every night. The fate of the traditional pep ceremony of Homecoming fell as the icy rain on the night of the pep rally. Even though elaborate preparations had been arranged for a parade the idea was dissolved by the rain. The spirit, however, was hardly chilled. As Friday night approached the passion grew. The first half of the game was highlighted by the 13-O lead by Monona Grove. At every added point chain reactions shook the crowd. The audience spewed forth bursts of confetti as the band played the school song. The court consisting of Queen and her attendants watched the game from chairs adjacent to the bench. This proved to have its hazards when they were almost bowled over by football players. The return of the Native alumni sparked hi's from present students. The most recognizable change came from last year's seniors in the transformation from teens to college kids. The halftime program included the Grand promenade circling half the field by the Queen's court and their es- corts. The marching band put on an excel lent musical exposition. The climax occured when Homecoming King Wayne Fielder placed the floral crown on Bobbie Gannon adding his own personal seal of approval. The second half brought forth more excellent football. The final score was 27-0. Fine efforts by all the players accounted for the win. The thrilling, mud soaked game ended in a 14-13 win for Monona Grove. With sole leadership of the conference, the team easily defeated the rest of their opponents .
