Mr. Sargent, Mr. Patterson, Mr. Wikoff, Mr. Schwarz, Mr. Wilke, Mr. Vale, Mr. Skiles, Mr. Winter, Mr. Onsager. BOARD OF EDUCATION The Board of Education is made up of representatives of the community. It establishes, maintains and improves the educational standard of the Monona schools . 6 SUPERIN TEN DEN T Edmond F. Schwan By co-ordinating the Monona schools, Mr. Schwan and Mr Sargent supervise the youth development in the Village of Monona . ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT Loyal 1. Sargent 7 PRINCIPAL DONALD I-IELSTAD LaCrosse State Teachers College B. B. S. Univeisity of Wisconsin M. S. Memories are among our most treasured possessions. In contrast to the material possessions we hold in high regard, memories are strangely unique in many Ways. They cost us nothing-yet have an undefinable value to us. We cannot sort them out to our own personal liking-we must accept the good with the bad, the pleasant with the unpleasant. They have the facility for stirring up every emotion we are capable of experiencing from boundless joy and elation to tears of sadness or happiness. My most fervent hope for each of you is that in your youth you are able to develop the precious quality of lmowing the real beauty of life and being appreciative of the opportunities and the joys that each minute, hour, and day of living holds for you. Let none of you fine young men and women that we have such pride in and hope for wish away the days, the months and the years of your high school career. Build your lives, your character, and your personalities on a foundation as strong as the pro- verbial Rock of Gibralter -a foundation grounded on an understanding and true appreciation for life and the wonder of living. Let your memories be wonderful memories. Donald I-lelstad PAUL THOMPSON Milton College B.S. ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT The Director of Attendance and Student Control is Mr. Thompson. After an early season defeat to a very strong Stoughton team, which was erence c p p the eventual conference champion and second ranked team in the state football poll, Monona's eleven bounced back to play fine football the remainder of the season. The defensive unit again led the conference for the second consecutive year. and the offensive unit won the rushing title. With our victory string snappe a ng men threw off complacency and disappointment and finished with a fine 7-1 record for second. 1 Although this years squad was made up of many underclassmen Monona Grove enjoyed fine senior leadership. Two boys, Capt. Bill Dille and Tom McKay, closed out brilliant three year careers and were twice named to all conference and all state teams. Others making the first team all conference squad were end Bob Osburn and sophomore halfback Wayne Fiedler. Following the conclusion of the season the squad was honored at a banquet at which time the selection of Tom McKay as most valuable player and Tim Halleran as captain for 1964 was announced. d t 10 followi the Stoughton loss a squad of predominatly underclass- 106 VARSITY FOOTBALL SCORES MG 26 Wis. Although their record, which was 2 wins and 10 losses, does not show it, the boys went all out for every match. Dennis Berg and Ricky Hynum advanced into the sectionals of the W. I.A. A. State wrestling tournament. Rick and Dennis then advanced to the state finals where they placed first, second, in their weight class. VARSITY WRESTLING Wayland Academy Lost - 34-12 Wis. They were determined to not only maintain the tradition of the squads before them but set their goals even higher. Led by some outstanding boys including Capt. jerry Meister, Don Harvey, Ed Kollis, Bob Wilson, Roger Durnford, and othersg this squad made it seven consecutive Badger Conference titles and went on to place fifth in the State in the strong Class A field. We saw our first individual state champion crowned on our own track which hosted all three state meets and attracted some 6000 spectators. Bob Wilson achieved the honor mentioned above in the broadjump with a leap of 22' 5 112 . During the summer months our boys continued to do Monona Grove proud by not only qualifying at State Junior Champs but going on to the National Meet in St. Paul and walking away with five gold medals along with three silver ones. Don Woosley, champion in the 440 plus anchoring our winning relay team, was selected to receive the first annual Bob Richards trophy as the outstanding performer in the national meet. Other boys placing in the National were Jeff Swanson, 2nd in the 2203 Pete Snider, 2nd in the polevaultg Wayne Fiedler, 2nd in the broadjumpg and Bob Brill who teamed up with Woosley, Fiedler, and Swanson on the winning relay team.
