These doors, which seemed so large and awesome when we first approached them as freshmen, soon opened up a whole new world to us--a world not only of classes and study involving hours of hard work, but also a fun-filled world of activities and new friendships. Through your yearbook you will always be able to return to this world of memories for your Maroon and Gold is a doorway to the past. D.A.R. Honors Senior Good Citizens Standing before the Freedom Shrine are Mary Anne Romano and Quinn Anderson, winners of the good citizenship awards pre- sented each year by the local chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution. This year the club had a membership of 200. The club begins its activities early by promoting the Big and Little Sister Picnic, and by helping with the Homecoming activities. Later, it puts on pep assemblies and makes programs for the Sno-ball. Girls' Club also sponsors a Valentine's Dance, Easter meditation services for the whole school, and a spring tea honoring the Senior girls. The Monmouth Zipper basketball squad, under the coaching of Mr. Mike Kalosh, completed the best basketball season in Monmouth High School history, compiling 20 wins against 3 losses. Two of the Zippers' losses were at the hands of the Galesburg Silver Streaks, the eventual Regional champions. The other loss was to Peoria Wood- ruff, another Regional champ. The Zippers made history by defeating Galesburg on Monmouth's home court, 60-56, for the first time since 1954. Hard fought games and excellent sportsmanship characterized the Zippers' type of play. Monmouth's Snapper basketball team, under the guidance of Coach Woodall, completed its season with a four won and thirteen lost record. The won-lost record of the Snappers could have been better since many of their games were lost by slim margins. Fine potentialities have been displayed by quite a few of the Snaps. They could aid the Zippers considerably in the next two years as varsity basketball players. And besides, the future is more important than the past. Jerry Rule was the statistical leader for the Snaps leading in the field goal department and rebound department. He was high scorer with 270 points for a 10. 6 average. Dick Owen led in the free throw department with the greatest number of free throws and the best free throw percentage. Buttons Complete Successful Basketball Season FRONT ROW: T. Knauer, D. The Buttons played both an A and B schedule enabling more boys to get playing experience against boys of their own age and ability. Almost the entire schedule of the Freshman team was played against schools larger than our own. Credit must be given to the Buttons who were able to compile such a fine season record. Mike Corgnati led the team in the number of field goals and free throws and was high scorer on the team with a total of 159 points for a 14. 4 average. Glenn Holler had the best field goal and free throw percentages and Tracey Knauer hauled down the most rebounds. The A team finished the season with a respectable 7 won 4 lost record and an inexperienced B team ended the year with a 1 won and 5 lost record. Now that we stand at the threshold of new experiences, we look to the future with bright expectation and seriousness of purpose. A1- though we now depart into the realm of the Big, Wide, Wonderful World, we will never forget the memorable events which have highlighted our high school days. After overcoming such problems as finding our classrooms, lockers, and assembly seats, our first major project was to elect our officers and board members. Under the leadership of our sponsors, Miss Thompson and Mr. Kalosh, and our officers, Quinn Anderson, Jim Brown, Ellen Armstrong, and Stan Twomey, we were led through a most excit- ing year. We were elated when our Homecoming float We'll Drag 'em Off the Field won first place in originality. Ellen Armstrong took her place in the Royal Court as our Freshman Attend- ant. We D0 appreciate your tireless service Custodians Lee Anderson, Archie Robertson, Bob Henness, Arnold Parsons, and Charley Bailey. Many times visitors have commented on the cleanly appearance of our high school. Credit should go to the five smiling gentlemen here at MHS who keep the building in smooth running order. We are sometimes in- clined to forget these men, even underestimate their work. Year round, there are jobs to be done. There is the flag to be raised, the building to be heated in the winter, snow to be shoveled, and repairs of all types to be made in the summer. Halls and rooms must be cleaned every day, sometimes twice a day. Besides all this work, the custodians are always ready to help us prepare for a dance or a party.
