The Ravelings 1978-79 Monmouth College Monmouth, Illinois volume 83 ir ? .ti jm Monmouth College, as a liberal arts community, proposes to provide basic knowledge and inspiration to assist young men and women in gain- ing an understanding of themselves and their world. The concern of Monmouth College is with the individual student; his mind, his aspirations, and his ideas within an intellectual and cultural en- vironment in which Christian ideals are affirmed, the college aims to train highly effective young men and women who will in turn render a service to society. STiJ (IP. ' .  - ' U 0 - ? f Monmouth College . . . VISITORS notice the beautiful campus, GRAD SCHOOLS know it for its academic reputation, PARENTS recognize it as bills in the mail, THE ADMINISTRATION devises methods to obtain and main- tain a student body, THE GREEN ARMY knows it as broken lights and a large lawn to mow, THE FACU LTY seek tenure and lament the unscholarly ways of the scholars, AND THE STUDEIMTS-They are the laughing, living heart of the whole- learning in spite of themselves and finding that they love the whole when it ' s time to leave. COLLEGE is a unique experience. It ' s like nothing you ' ve ever known and everything you ' ve never dreamed of. College is the breathing space between adolescense and true adult respons- ibility. 10 There ' s days to fall and days to rise, and days for making haste- Days for seeking out yourself, But no days you can waste. For there are changes both in cir- cumstances and in knowledge that impose constraints on and give opportunities to the teacher in each succeeding generation. It is in this sense that education is in con- stant process of invention. -Jerome Bruner- 14 ml r m k. ii «vf;. Hon X.. ) 1- V i .i Co-editors Janice Barton (left) and Tenann Hougiiton College yearbooks are undergoing many changes in their format lately and new trends are forming. We have tried to change the yearbook to fit those trends that are becoming popular, as well as to get away from the tradition of formalness. We have changed the size of the book and increased the number of pages. In an effort to include as many people as possible in the book, residence halls were added. Senior pictures took on a new appearance as informal pictures were taken. There was much controversy over this matter, but in the long run, it has saved the school a bit of money, and the staff actually got to contribute a new idea to the book. The RAVELINGS is just getting back on its feet as an organization and I am glad that I have contributed to that. Last year ' s book showed that a group of determined individuals could indeed improve the quality of yearbooking here at IVIC. I hope that this year ' s RAVELINGS will show a continuation of this. There are no set rules or regulations regarding the format of the book. It is the editor ' s duty to determine what the end result will be. It isn ' t an easy job and it puts the editor under a lot of stress and strain. But, this year ' s staff and editors survived, even though it seemed as if we had more bad days than good. Along with your diploma and a few other memories of IVionmouth, you will probably take this book with you. I hope, sincerely, that it is something you will enjoy picking up later on in your life. I would like to apologize to any person, organization, or senior that we missed, or that missed us— as far as picture taking goes. The majority of pictures for this book were taken, developed and printed in a 3 week period. (That ' s a lot of work!) I would like to thank Janet Nelson for all of her help by taking and printing the majority of the pictures appearing in this book. I really app reciate all you ' ve done. Thanks to all my staff members and friends who help me in times of need. (Believe me, you have many times of need as an editor!) My special thanks to Maria McFadden for keeping me sane through my year of editorship. Dear Friends, This year has been a tough one, but isn ' t every year a tough one when you ' re on the yearbook staff and trying to compile a book that is better than the year before. If I were an objective observer instead of bemg the co-editor of the RAVELINGS, I would consider the RAVELINGS stafF to be the most disorganized, organized organization on campus, but I think you are going to enjoy this yearbook despite that observation. I would like to thank our staff individually if I may. Thank you Dave Anderson for your beautiful work on the lay-out of the yearbook cover and for your original ideas on layouts; thank you Tica Burdon for helping on lay-out and typing; thank you Mary Ann Hong for doing the typing as well as layouts and for being a good sounding board; thank you Becky Mosley for keeping our account book balanced; thank you Janet Nelson and Greg Phillips for your outstanding work on photography; thank you Cynthia Swift- Fingers Stoner for a lot of typing and thank you Mike Virlee for helping us out when we really needed you. Last, but never the least thank you Janice Barton and Maria McFadden (I consider her to be a co-editor as well) for letting me work with you and learn how to use that enlarging reduction thing-a-ma-jig used for layouts. I have learned much working with you. I hope to do as well a job next year. I would like to thank everyone in the yearbook (yes, this means you) for your cooperation. See you next year. Tenann L. But now our sleep has fled and our dream is over, and it is no longer dawn. The noontide is upon us and our half waking has turned to a fuller day and we must part. If in the twilight of memory we should meet once more, we shall speak again together and you shall sing me a deeper song. And If our hands should meet in another dream, we shall build another tower in the sky . . . -taken from THE PROPHET — K. Gibran Marilyn Murphy 168 With Heartfelt Thanks The Ravelings Staff would like to dedicate this book to Reverend Paul McClanahan for his years of devoted service to Monmouth College. In the words of Professor J. Stafford Weeks— Paul has been a friend of students. He is for them and they know it. His concern to help students examine their values has been expressed in courses, seminars, and field trips. Staff members and students alike have seen in Paul what one faculty member calls a combination of faith at its best. ' Professor McClanahan retired at the conclusion of the 1978-1979 academic, school year after having served the college as chaplain from 1964-1979. Thank you Reverend McClanahan for your outstanding contributions to MC. 169 student Enrollment 1978-79 Adams, Christine Adams, Robert Al-ammari, Saud Abdullali Albers, Cynthia Albritton, David Aide, Karl Alexander, Mary Allison, Jeanine Allison, William Amato, John Ambrose, Susanna Amodeo, Patricia Anderson, Alan Anderson, Barbara Anderson, David Anderson, Michael Anderson, Robert Arriffin, Yaacob Armstrong, Amy Arreguin, Emma Azzam, Wajdi Auer, David Babcock, Barbara Babcock, Richard Bacher, Joseph Baker, Steve Barton, Janice Barr, Julie Batson, Pamela Baumann, Andrew Baxter, Julie Bean, Kerry Becraft, David Becker, Roger Bemiss, Beverly Bender, Lora Benavides, Maria Berg, Cheryl Bergquist, John Beshears, Frank Biemolt, Wayne Birkhead, Christine Black, Robert Blake, Patricia Bland, Debra Bland, Raymond Blessing, Joseph Bleck, Jeanne Blender, James Blomberg, Jill Bodine, Brent Bogash, David Bohler, Cindy Bohler, Christopher Bonynge, Lisa Borik, Steve Bourdon, Terry Bowman, Katie Boyle, Mary Bravo, Alejandro Bravo, Gerardo Brannon, Mary Brasche, Suzanne Brewer, Derek Breshnehan, Timothy Brinkmann, Jeffry Brown, Arvette Brown, Cheryl Brown, Christopher Brown, Michael Brown, Robert Brockman, Carol Brooks, Joel Brotherton, Joel Brock, Karen Brooks, Ralph Bubb, Paul Buehler, Gary Bult, Janice Buntin, Teresa Burdon, Susan Burks, Mary Burau, Mark Burg, Rita Burke, Terry Bushnell, Theresa Buttinghausen, Kristina Byers, Gloria Caffray, Tammy Camel, Cheryl Camp, Jeffrey Campbell, Lynne Campbell, Nancy Carson, Cole Carver, Jeff earner, Kathryn Carson, Robert Cechner, Susan Chavez, Cynthia Chayer, Martin Chapin, Ross Chamseddine, Salami Chard, Thomas Chevalier, Marc Chiodo, Anthony Chiaracharuwat, Pithayawat Christerson, Mark Clark, Alan Clark, Audrey Clayborn, Brian Clapper, Craig Clark , Ivy Clawson, Jeffery Clark, Michael Closen, Michael Coats, G.
