From a United flight to a Walkout: 71 makes its ceremonious entrance. The September air is warm, spirits are high. The anxious confusion is unmistakable, marking the birth of vital new experiences. f i . 11 ■' f 4  ?2 «£« ■' . ' ' ' « ' ' • ' .. ' ) ' ' IS But there is purpose in the bedlam. SWAP rallies the beanied hordes into unity. It ' s friendly antagonism, this first struggle. A painted face is the sign of a rebel, but the humiliation washes out with soap and water. Registration ends the picnic. A hundred hands try to make it easier. Direction signs, IBM, faculty aides, alphabetical time schedules, draft forms, meal tickets, this building, that building, loan, scholarship, sign here, sign there — all this and more for the birth of a Monmouth student. Hmm, let ' s see. Two classes at 11 :00. Doesn ' t look at all auspicious. A through E from nine until ten. Who should I ask? I didn ' t know it was so complicated. Maybe I can find my roommate, she ' ll know. Alone in a mass. That first exam. Now to test my study habits. They said if you get behind you ' re dead. Wonder where they ' re moving that old house? So much goes on here. How do I get involved? Hey, roomie, you goin ' to the football game Saturday? Sure they ' re tough. But nobody stomps on you guys unless you expect it. Hit hard and think. Show me a team. A great season. Defense strangled opponents, desire buried them. Time out. Wipe the sweat from your eyes, shake the fog from your battered brain. Then back on the field to hit some more. What a team. One last struggle, and then it ' s over. Chalk talk, wind sprints, rackin ' your body, done for another year. Reichow ' s men really gave ' em hell. IMPACT: Old into New. Progress on the drawing board, contributions rolling in. The goal: plastic surgery on our crumbling facilities. Monmouth keeps-on-moving. CONCERT LECTURE: The Basque Festival Dancers, a Michigan State ensemble, a tuneful evening with Gracie. The added enrichment of liberal arts learning 1 J ' ' ' ' ' f j - f :i , .. .. - |iiiiii f if ' ' Steak Hop?? Well, it lends excitement to a Saga meal. (Hey, Joe, see that blond over there?) Plaid painted the brilliant morning, puffs of white on wheels streamed by, royalty sat perched. The spectacle of the year. I 1 ' 1 1 .- :■1 ■■■' 1 ■. - ' -o-M - -. Hk h Knox gets crushed on the grid- iron, alumni return to tradition- al welcome, the Serendipity Singers fill the gym with sooth- ing sounds of victory. Prindle and Smuggler seize laurels, Cheryl Trostrud tapped to don the tiara. The week finds climax, and then resides. Another Homecoming slips into memory. The term wears on. Halloween sneaks in, bringing the Kappas with punapkins and song. Still no sign of winter. Senate de- bates still flurry, midterms have taken theirtoll. r fc i A ' The season ' s first play struggles through adolescent stages. Out on the gridiron, the traditional clash of women on a power-puff scale. Aching bones tomor- row, but what a groove, , ' eh, girls? INSPECTOR GENERAL opens. A fast- tongued imposter milks the town dry, then blasts off, 3000 rubles richer. That was bad enough for the mayor. But now the real inspector shows up, and he don ' t take bribes. His specialty: firing squads. The cast gulps to a finish. The irony, eye-popping. The production, stuffed wi th talent. E l I 11 k b4 I m ■■ISl tM il ■iS h mi H m Special events fill the year, too. Like when a handful of choristers forgot Bach for awhile to belt out some Pop. Or when some outspoken students gath- ered to say This Here War Has Just Gotta Go. The point was made — without a lay-in at the construction site of the new women ' s dorm, without incendiary draft cards. So people would think instead of frown. m v - m ' S ' ' ' 1 1.1 . |i ; ' ' .r On last excuse to procrastinate for finals: Preservation Hall. Dixie marched north, and a taste of Orleans was ours. We heard it live: sou! music, Southern style. Maybe Billie and Dee Dee invented the word genuine. That sound could only have come from their hearts. ■■■■-2 1. But finals attacked any- way. Christmas close, yet so far. Maybe a drink would help, some say. I hope the library is open Saturday night, say others. Either way, the end of the first term drifts by. Term two. When winter drops in permanently. And Wallace Hill rivals Everest as an im- passable ice hulk. Dormitory doors fly open, iron rush rules are waived for 72 pre- cious hours, and hungry Greeks stalk their freshman prey. IXA ' Ts , Fjords r ir or etir. y ry ca .V Pledges parade in victory smiles. Flowers and friendship mark the neophytic host. Hyde Park? Call it an out- let for student steam. Its chief orator: President Richard Brown, tenacious liberal who dared to be controversial. We just funky our hang-ups away. Qjt Us Vonaesfc. NceAX souu more! Even from the balcony, a brilliant lecture. f ROTj Sj: (?W TOO P - VjALL c e■HAL. - M ' For music addicts, the Vienna Choir Boys. Mozart and melodrama, Austrian style. A Scots fastbreak to second place. An I unusual Monmouth team. They scored, big. who can beat a bearded, favorite- son philosopher from Alexis? The Alcorn machine rolls to Student Association victory. Second City players crash the campus scene. Quick-paced satire, hard-hitting humorous. The big melt begins, transforming frozen walks into mud-haven. Studies shift into overdrive as the midnight oil burns on. John Cook his name. Berenger his char- acter. The desolate soul in super- mechanized society. A search for beauty in concrete wilderness, a pitiful en- counter with concrete minds. Stunning portrayal by the Actor of the Year. eTo6e ly Second terms rolls shut. The air returns to ice, the wind a razor. Everybody singin ' the Finals Week Rag. And then the sun popped through, ush- ering in third term and hope for academic res- urrection. A week with neighbor Mexico. Each of these years has seen an editor and his staff rack their brains and stretch their talents to produce a finished book. This year was no different. It took an unusu- ally long time to finish; we hope that it has been worth the wait. Although at times it has seemed that this book was little more than an indi- vidual effort, there are many who have played indispensable roles in its produc- tion. To these people — Rose Biedenstein, Marcia Brink, Connie Bryson, Steve Herstatt, Hank Stern, Jeff Weiss, Joe Hause and Ralph VanDyke of American Yearbook Co. — go my deepest thanks and appreciation. Thanks go also to Dave Allen, a most talented writer, whose efforts are the answer to any editor ' s prayers. Finally, all the staff salutes you, the people of Monmouth College. As the subjects of this book, you have provided us with an endless supply of excitement and spirit to capture. Thanks to you our work was enjoyable. — Ron Mavworm RAVELINGS Ackcrman.JohnM, 119 Acklcy, William K- 119 Adams. Utlic K- 100.148 Adams.
