A new man appears on the campus. He moves quickly and with sincere interest. The man is called president, but he means much more to the students. He is their chance for a New Monmouth College. The student like the man and they are intrigued with his ideas. They have tired of being good at loosing. The new Monmouth College and all hopes for this dream seem to include the new president. The face of the president is happy and yet serious. He becomes involved in the students lives in both a conscious and unconscious way. His spirit, his interest, his liveliness are appreciated more than the students often acknowledge. Welcome— Mr. President! They come to Monmouth from the East and the West — Chicago, New York, Peoria, Omaha. They come in search of many things. Every year new faces are seen on cam- pus. These faces belong to the freshmen. They are faces which are alive, expec- tant, and just a little confused. The freshmen are ready for whatever they will meet; the upperclassmen are ready for another year. It is a new life for the freshmen — an adventure away from home. Orientation is the first phase of fresh- manism. It is a strange time — a time of joy and surprise. It is the unpacking and arranging of the mountains of stuff from home; it is the meetings — endless meetings; it is the walk-out, the water- melon feast, and the bonfire. For the freshmen, orientation is new and dif- ferent; for the upperclassmen it brings back memories of their first experience at MC. The upperclassmen smile and remember that long run through town, they remember SWAF; and they re- member the wet, gooey watermelon seeds. 26 28 The days of orientation pass quickly. These days are great ones! They are busy, hurried, strange days. These days are enthusiastic ones. They are filled with making new friends, meeting that mysterious roommate, walking, and oc- casionally even sitting down. The beanies are distributed among the freshmen. We watch as those red and white caps bounce up and down the hills behind Wallace Hall. We watch as the beanies stand up in line. We watch as they protest. We watch as they laugh, and learn, and grow up. The freshmen are, of course, baffled by the episode of registration. They write their names and wonder what it all means. They try so hard to pretend they know what is happening— but so do the upperclassmen. 29 ONE SPECIAL PART OF COLLEGE IS HOMECOMING. The floats have taken many hours to build. They are a combination of hard work, chicken wire, paper, smiles, and sometimes tears. The golden horn, the handkerchief, an ivory smile, jubilant eyes — that ' s how to say Louis Armstrong! The Queen steps from her seat. Her date watches as they announce her title; he seems assured that he has made a good choice. They call it Yell Like Hell! They have fun; they smile at the others; and, when it is their turn, the others will smile at them. 30 31 32 Anne White, So. Linda Jungbluth, Jr. Liz Fuller, Sr. 1 flTl 1 1 Sue Wichert Queen THERE IS STILL MORE TO HOMECOMING AT MONMOUTH There is a football game with a busy coach, a hard working team, and plenty of fans. What else? Pretty girls! 13 BEING A POLITICIAN IS AN UNUSUAL JOB . . . . . . students at a college wash their cars and hope to make a good impression. The politician also wants to make a good impression. He smiles, shakes hands, promises, and wonders. The students wonder, too. Who will be their leader? An old leader dies ... his flag flies over the campus. We watch the flag and remember Mr. Hoover; while the flag flutters in the wind, work and life must continue. Work and life in the greatest country in the world . . . 34 35 r 36 ONE WEEKEND . . . TWO EVENTS. THEIR PARENTS AND HALLOWEEN The parents pay the bills, and then once a year they arrive on campus for a visit. A father chuckles as his daughter crosses the goal line; the mother laughs nervously. The parents wait in line; they watch another football game; and they see a play in the little theater. As they drive away from the college the parents realize their children have grown older. Halloween is a holiday of fun. A Saga party with a witch and cute kids from grade school are part of the fun. Do the college students have fun on Hal- loween? Do they soap windows and steal pumpkins? . . . The parents think their children have grown older. 37 THE SUN IS SHINING . . IT ' S STILL WARM. LISTEN . . . ... to the sounds of autumn play. Do your hear the wheels of the skate board noisely grinding the rough concrete? Hear the lively meet of tennis ball and racket, the squeak of the taut swing chains, the shout of a happy girl, the rustle of the leaves, and the work of the busy green army. 38 39 Robert Greyforth The Reverend Asbury Don Paulson FAMOUS PERSONALITIES CONTRIBUTE ... new ideas and more chapel credits.  ' • ,i i  ' Richard Thurley John Howard Griffin Deanne-Drinkall Duo .m : ; v- . The college students know the high school seniors expect the meetings, the openhouse, the football games, and the talent show. Soon the weekend is over . . . the seniors take one final look at the campus. They see the athletic field, the stately build- ings, the union, and the tennis courts. That ' s a girls ' dorm, one says. Hmmm, I ' ll be sure to bring my telescope! 43 ■I r CHRISTMAS COMES WITH . rolicking, frolicking, and its fun, fun, fun. They are anxious for the holidays. They enjoy the parties, the snow, and the trip home. Christmas also brings finals, and the students are not always as anxious for those finals as they plan and await the happy days after . RUSH IS HARD WORK. THE PRESSURE IS ON: the Greeks want to make a good impression; the freshmen also strive for that instilling opinion. Often during rush people meet only faces. Later they will learn to know the heart and souls of the friends they make. They talk and ask questions; they smile and they laugh. Greeks vote; rushees wonder. Rush ends as most of the ef- forts are rewarded . . . And meanwhile, what has happened to the studies? 48 IN THE WINTER it is supposed to snow . . . and if it doesn ' t they still have a good time. They plan open houses and dances; and if the barren ground makes the sledding tough, rope pulls and swimming meets make a summer holiday out of a winter carnival. FOOD CAN BE GOOD and Saga is the creator of goodness. They seem to enjoy eating, and they surely consume plenty. Of course, be- hind the double doors of the Saga kitch- ens is the center for busy hands, busy brains, and busy feet. Preparation and planning combine, and they appreciate it. The buggy Grier picnics, the Sunday night specials, the banquets, the early breakfast lines . . . this is Saga food. •i THEY ARE GOING ON A THINKING TRIP • • some thought the thinkers should have stayed home to ponder and plan. New York, New York, is a big town; and even though they didn ' t win the big prize, they had a good time. 54 THEY PRODUCE, PRESENT, AND PREVIEW activities for their chapel programs. The results are ques- tionable, curious, and often amazing. The spirit of Monmouth award is given to two professors. This prize is a small token given for dedicated and un- selfish service. Actors and actresses live and relive the scenes of make- believe life . . . sometimes the make-believe world seems real. Capering girls clown and cut up . . . they make a point in their satirical, subtle criticism. 55 56 THEY ARE GEOLOGISTS, MU- SICIANS, and social workers disguised as Monmouth college students travelling to all parts of the country. They spend their spring breaks in serv- ice. They miss their families at home, they miss the Florida rendez-vous, they miss the post-finals rest. They travel and travel, learn and learn, discover and dis- cover. Then their travelling seem to fade into a few memories ... as they return. AN ACTOR ' S PERFORMANCE and WUS week are linked by the word sharing. It is a game which has no losers . . . the students, the seasoned actor, and those people all over the world benefit from often forgotten unselfishness. .4 A, ' k pii 58 THEY HAVE WAITED FOR THIS SEASON. They seem relieved and joyous as the chill of winter is lifted from their life. A walk in the park, a kiss, a smile, and a tennis game are all part of spring. In the spring they are alive and strong. Later, much later, they will appreciate the gift of springtime. However, now they are young, and spring is only a season. THE RIVER RISES, RISES, RISES. The swirling, murky, muddy water overflows into the sur- rounding valley. The students meet the challenge. Their arms are tired; their hands are cold. They move thousands of pounds of wet sand. That old river laughs at the struggling humans who try to control its mighty force. But the bodies keep moving: they seem to forget that the river has risen and flooded the valley for hundreds of years. 62 63 INTELLIGENT, CAPABLE MEN ASSEMBLE on the college campus. They bring with them ideas which con- tribute to the educational experience of the student: this is the ideal purpose of the liberal arts festival. The student often ignores opportunities which come to him. He is often too concerned with other problems and dismisses an academic confrontation as unimportant. Will I have a date this weekend? Much too often ques- tions like this one engulf students ' minds as the intelligent, capable men continue their highly academic messages. 66 IN THE HOME STRETCH of the school year they have the Monmouth Relays, Queen Liz and her court, Ginny, Edie, Barb, and Judy cheer them on— and laugh as Baron takes first place. 67 Sigma Phi Epsilon Queen of Hearts Tau Kappa Epsilon Sweetheart Nancy Munn Anne Taylor FRATERNITY SWEETHEARTS, QUEENS, AND DREAM GIRLS .... the boys are proud and the girls are pleased 68 Alpha Tail Omega Sweetheart Sigma Alpha Epsilon Sweetheart Linda Morgan as springtime brings honors to five co-eds. Theta Chi Dream Girl Diane Osborne Judy Hodges 69 THEY ARE THE FIGHTING SCOTS and this is their annual Scot Olympics. A laugh rises from the campus . . . they are serious, but they smile. It is a chance for them to enjoy, to have a good time, to let loose. They enjoy the bicycle races, the wheel harrowing, and the wild parachute jump. They run, they watch, the scream. The event blends into a plaid of ex- perience. It is a combination of the colors and lines they will remember as happy, exciting, and traditional Mon- mouth. THE INAUGURATION OF A PRESIDENT, a special president of Monmouth College, creates a new feeling on the campus. Trees are planted, grass is trimmed, trees appear and dis- appear within a few days. An aged professor rakes the newly- sprouted grass, a co-ed pulls weeds, and a campus leader is harassed with poison ivy. The new enthusiasm and the growing fury reaches no climax, for Monmouth must step forward in its era of progress . Conservatively and patiently a vital change has taken place — a change which will not stand in second place— a change which will shape and reshape a small college. The students will someday re- alize they have experienced the turning point of their school ' s fu- ture. When the aged professor is gone, when the co-ed is a business woman, when the cam- pus leader is a professional lead- er — they will remember the im- pact of the inauguration of the seventh president of their college. As we stand on the threshold of the space age, as we look out upon a civilization more dynamic and more complicated than the world has ever known, as we contemplate the awful stakes for which we are playing the game of human relationships, we cannot escape the fact that once again, we must make no little plans. We must define the issues which face us and we must move boldly to meet them. President Duncan Wimpress. DISTRIBUTION COMBINATION COLLECTION CONFUSION 76 wm et ' J mmm fipiB Row 1: C. Easdale, S.
